Porn watch just makes me think…

That wasn’t the direction the BBC would take for a Springwatch spin off.

Check out the bundle of wires that run from the car to the tailgate – theses are prone to failure on many cars due to the way they flex each time the boot is opened.

Yep, had to replace/insert about 15cm of harness on my ‘99Focus, though that was just wiper, number plate lamps and boot release.

Is it’s all LED lamps on one side (side, indicator repeater, tail lamps) or just ones at the rear? If all, as above, likely to be poor connection towards the BCM end, if just one “lamp unit”, I’d be focussing at the lamp end, including checking that ground connection is still good.

If you’re unplugging connectors, check that there are no bent or pushed in pins.

    Ford Grenada cosworth.
    300bhp of smooth waft

In standard form ideal for moderately paced wafting, but I’d want to know a lot about how they got it to 300bhp from the standard 204bhp without ruining waftability, assuming you could find one in reasonable nick.

In tradition of recommending what you have (well had until recently), I’d rather have 3.0l Mondeo Ghia/Titanium X (not an ST220).

Most of my cars have had names, names may come quickly or take time (see Northwind post above). Oddly none of my bikes have have names beyond the obvious brand/model – confusion reigns with a black Orange and a blue Whyte.

    Cars with names…

F plate 1.6L Sierra estate – Rustbucket, ironic in retrospect as no rust on until north of 275k
K plate 2.0 Ghia Sierra Sapphire – Crowley
V plate 1.8 Zetec Focus estate – Rustbucket 2, though no rust until past 200k
52 plate Ka Sun Collection – Pog
55 plate 2.0 Titanium Mondeo Estate – Bertha
    63 plate XF 2.0d Sportbrake – Nina
    64 plate XF 3.0d Sportbrake – Katniss
    15 plate XE 2.0d – Stibbons
    65 plate XF 3.0d – Lipvig
    66 plate XF 3.0d – Missy
    55 plate 3.0 Ghia X Mondeo – Maya
    20 plate F-Pace – Brian

But as Northwind said, they will let you know there name in time.

Is it possible to pair a Garmin Instinct with zwift for HRM duties?

Should be, you’ll need to set it broadcast HR, but will depend on what you are running Zwift on – can it receive ANT+? My Vivoactive 4 only transmits ANT+, not Bluetooth, assume other Garmins are similar.

Have used Pendle wheel support, Atera folding up one (precursor to the Genio) and currently have a Yakima Just Click (was Whispbar branded when I got it)

Pendle – no issues, only sold it as car it went on was being sold, and new car was no towbar (company car). Could be a bit fiddly to get three bikes all lined up.

Atera – loved the “slide away” rather than tilt function, when it folded you ended up with quite a big “cube”, new one looks better. Was exchanged by Roofbox (who were always very helpful) for the Yakima/Whispbar as the lamp units kept failing – bulbs repeatedly dropping from the hangers, and then the lock seized. A real shame that some “commodity” parts spoilt an otherwise good rack.

Whispbar/Yakima – works really well, much easier to fit to and remove from the car than the Atera. Tilt more than sufficient to allow tailgate to open on my F-Pace. Sliding wheel trays/lamp units means it will fit straight in the boot no issues.

Yes, rode stage 1, though started at silly o’clock in the morning before work.

    Hopefully stage two later today.

AstraZeneca on Sunday afternoon, arm a bit achey in the evening, especially if I reached across with it. Woke up Monday AM feeling pants, head ache, body ache, temp a bit up and down. Paracetamol as suggested. Felt a bit better by lunchtime, teams interview (as second interviewer) finished just after two. Made cup of tea, sat down to drink cup of tea, woke up two hours later with a cold cup of tea next to me. Tuesday was ok but still a not right. Arm only sore where the jab was (like a three day old bruise, but without the fun colours).

Extremely variable, one pretty good, one “ok” and one pretty awful. Though had variable performance from other conveyancers as well.

Seems that it is totally dependant on the individuals working on your “case”, regardless of the company/firm.

Even though it is you paying them (I actually asked Countrywide once to confirm this as I seemed to be doing all the work) you will have to keep on at whoever is doing it them to keep things progressing as you have more to lose than they do.

Whilst I wouldn’t recommend Countrywide, don’t assume the alternatives will be any better.

Yes they can be fitted in double glazed units, though never had one myself. We looked at it briefly when we were considering some new build houses – other factors in the new builds meant we didn’t go that route.

I wouldn’t worry about the cat going over the work top to get to the flap, they’ll be walking over it anyway.

Sliding patio doors may be an issue. Our one with a chip reader sticks about three inches from the flat surface internally, and two inches externally. The “basic” one we have on an internal door, is less than an inch each side.

Still intrigued why removing fuse 14 drops the drain from a very steady 83mA to 60mA?

Most likely as the locking module is still awake (see timbog160’s post). The definition of On and Off on a car has been blurred for many years. Long gone are the days of “off – accessory – engine run – crank” being a direct link to whether something is powered or not. Back in the early 90s, a 30sec power sustain after “key-off” for the powertrain control unit was pretty standard at the OEM I worked for. Similarly any remote functions (from central locking upwards) needs at least one (more these days) module to be at a minimal level of “awake”.

Is that with it on high with no air flow? Mine would trip the thermal cutout if on high and not moving (sat on a table for instance).

Set a lower target of 2500km for 2020 (cf 4250km for 2019) as knew I’d be starting a new job, living away during the week until house move happened…

Then 2020 got into full swing in March… :-)

Combination of lock downs and WFH actually helped the cycling no end.

    Currently at 3431km in 141h35m (approx 2/3 road, 1/3 turbo/zwift) having climbed 27,200m

I had the same issue with the AA. Capped my claim at that limit, I then “appealed”, they insisted on going back to the recordings.  Where I had repeatedly asked the salesperson to confirm that multiple (at least 8) bikes all under the named item limit were covered, even if they together they comfortably exceeded that. On the call they never mentioned the outbuilding limit (which includes detached garages).

They settled for the full amount once they had been through the recordings, though they did include a “it’s up to you to check that the policy meets your needs once the paper work arrives” jibe – I pointed out that I had multiple times on the call…mumble grumble.

Then the fun started with trying to discount the payment as I wanted cash settlement, not new bikes (most of them were older bikes I’d built up from frames). Said I’d have to talk to Wheelies about whether they could source appropriate replacements. Spoke to a really helpful chap at Wheelies, who I suspect told the AA to pay what he’s asking quickly before he really takes you to town – one of the bikes was an early 80s Witcomb custom road frame (campy dropouts, first generation Dura-ace mechs) which owed me me about £350 (fair price for what it was) – rather than getting them to provide a brand new custom frame dripping with Dura-ace.

<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>No recommendations on specific ones, but I’d be getting two smaller capacity,  rather than one bigger driver. 2x1TB should easily be in budget.</span>

Define a set of criteria that apply (how long is the commute, how good is the coffee, pay, time off etc), score for each role, add weighting for importance, and do some sums. It’s not really the answer it gives that is important – it makes you think about what is important to you at this time – right now, job security might be more important than a pay rise for you.

2.5yrs ago, I left a reasonably secure, comfortable and well paid role, to take a role on a new project, in a different company not associated with the industry I’ve worked in all my career.

Unfortunately, that project got abruptly cancelled, approx 9 months after moving house (sale and purchase), about 18months in role. So I’m now a second house sale/purchase further on, and working back at my prior employer, but in a different but not unconnected role.

Do I regret it, not in the slightest, if that project had gone through to completion it would have been something special to have been part of (actually it still is, with what the team achieved in the time). For me, one factor in the decision was how would I feel if the project had been a success, and I had not taken that chance to be part of it.

Just seen a link to the great new traffic light system. Apparently the top level with max restrictions is…….Green! FFS!

Rimmer : Step up to red alert.
Kryten : Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb.

Not for Chrohns, but had permanent Ileostomy & proctocolectomy in the mid nineties (temp Ileostomy three years before that).

From memory, it was a while before I was back on the bike, they were still advising donut rings to sit on back then. Might be worth just checking how it feels – drop you saddle low so that you can lower yourself down taking the weight in your legs. First hint of ouchy, stop!

As for saddle once you’ve healed, shouldn’t be any different to what suited before – There shouldn’t be any change to the external bits that contact the saddle.

Any other questions about biking with a bag, please ask.

Wasn’t it Morgan that famously make/made their car chassis from ash? In which case, why not a bike?

Don’t think the chassis was ever made of wood, just the “body” frame, and still is for at least some of the cars (Plus 4/6).

You need to get diag tool on it to see what codes (if any) it’s setting. The 1.2tsi engine will have a multitude of sensors, coolant temp being just one that could impact the idle speed. If it’s not got a MAF it will have other sensors to measure airflow (MAP & BAP) etc.

    TedC
    Full Member

I’d be checking the resistance values if the engine coolant temp sensor for starters. (Not the one for the dash gauge, the one for the ECU)*

*I only have old cars. Anything newish may use a combined sensor…

On most (all? Def for VW & Ford since mid/late 200x’s) modern cars, the instrument cluster temp gauge will be displaying a “processed” version of the temperature the PCM[1] is sending. It will generally point to a fixed, central, position for all temps between about 75degC and 110degC.

As for the “high idle” when starting with foot to the floor, shortly followed by dropping to normal idle speed, that could well be the PCM just sorting out what is happening following a non-standard start, with far higher airflow than normal. Not knowing what car, or the age, makes it hard to guess what’s wrong, but it sounds like the forced higher idle is helping to mask whatever is wrong with the transmission.

If you start the car normally (foot off of the acc. pedal), and then use acc pedal to up the revs to 1100 for 30secs do you get the same improvement?

Some most recent petrol cars do have a particulate filter, and don’t assume that because it is petrol it doesn’t have a DMF – both my 2.0l and 3.0l Mondeo’s has one, 2005 vintage.

    1. PCM = Powertrain Control Module, the box that controls the engine, and sometimes the gearbox. In the automotive development world, an ECU generally refers to Electronic Control Unit, of which modern cars have loads.

BEV’s more likely to weigh more (size for size) and they’re silent which isn’t massively helpful to cyclists and or the partially sighted.

AVAS (acoustic vehicle alerting systems) requirements on vehicles should address the low speed Noise scenario, at higher speeds other noises are still present.

You could follow the “Back O’ Skiddaw” sportive route, avoids all the big passes (70km, 1100m of climbing per my Garmin). Officialy starts and finishes at the theatre by the lake but anywhere in Keswick would suffice. For a gentle start from Newlands just head into Keswick via Portinscale. For a more chellenging start, head west, up and over to Buttermere, turn right for Whinlatter, left for Honister.

They also ride bikes. Some years ago on unlit cycle path, thought I could see something in the distance (Lights were still pretty pants for seeing with, even with some 10w cat eyes). Suggested that t other cyclist in full black stealth mode should some lights…

FMEA = Failure Mode Effects Analysis

An approach for understanding how your system/component/process can fail, how likely it is fail how likely you are to detect the failure and the consequences of the failure. You then use this information to improve the requirements/specification/implementation of your system/component/process as appropriate.

Running in a decent res/frame rate meant my gopro (hero 5 vintage) battery life wasn’t brilliant – wouldn’t last a decent road ride! Would just about last a ride to and from work (hour and half total).

Now have cycliqs front and rear and battery life is much better (and they’re bit stealthy as they appear to be “just a light”).

Based on my previous experience [1], anybody but the AA following garage break in in 2015.

[1] Sheds and garages not physically attached to your house may have a separate limit (£3k in my case), only exception being if they are named items, which have to be above a certain value. If you have many bikes, all well below that, but in total way over, your cover is limited to that £3k. Only got my claim paid they went back and checked the call logs. I’d repeatedly asked about the scenario above (fortunately) On the call. Apparently it’s not the fault of the person selling you the policy if they don’t know the policy details, and you should double check for suitability when you get all the small print.
