    Dehumidifiers cost to run.

    Quick look at typical Meaco – 165watts.

    Using the hydrometer setting at 50%, our dries washing well, and isn’t running the fan/compressor continuously.

    Wandering off the charger topic here. I was just near a Taycan on a quiet road. I find it weird that Porsche engineers spent time designing the (optional) fake ICE engine noises.

    If it was at low (“walking”) speeds, it may well have been the AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System).

    Towbar is my preference. Current car doesn’t have one and I can’t have one fitted and have had to the roof at route. Have to use a folding step to get the middle mounted ones on/off safely.

    Had bikes in the room at PI many times, and TL a few. I had a number of repeat stays at the PI in Cirencester, they gave me ground floor room after the first visit so I didn’t have to do the stairs with the bike.

    Seen shorts inside out twice. Both times absolute newbies on Sportives. Both wearing pants underneath as well to complete what was really quite a ‘special’ look. One of them was a bright blue chammy!

    Going for the full Mandrill look?

    I’d sort every other method of accessing the shed first – how easy is it to gain access without even going near the lock. Anyone with malintent, will look for the easiest way in, not how to defeat the the really big lock – see cutting of bike racks rather than locks.

    It seems just fine in warm or average weather – coolant temp never moves.

    And other comments about the temp gauge. Correct that they are non-linear in what they display. The VW clusters I worked on (mid 2000s) had a dead band from about 80 to 110 degs, and this is common approach across all manufacturers. From a drivers POV you really only need to know three conditions: Warming up, normal running, getting too hot. My Ka didn’t have a temp gauge, just a warning lamp for if it got too hot (which I never saw).

    If you have the correct coolant mix, the boiling point is way above 110degs. When working on cooling systems at Ford in the early ‘90s, correct coolant mix and pressure cap fitment would boil at 131deg at sea level, and 127deg at altitude (think top of Grossglockner pass).

    T2 here.

    Been on Metformin for a number of years (at least 5), after more than that managing through diet/exercise. Dose has crept up and Siptaglyptin and Dapaglifozin added to the mix, as in spite of my efforts, couldn’t get it to stay down.

    Can honestly say, I’ve not had any side effects from my of them.

    Currently awaiting review to be scheduled at hospital diabetic team. Combination of other factors pushed my HbA1c numbers up unexpectedly, and then Covid + bonus flu/RSV before Christmas have pushed them even further up. 🙁

    Based on genetics, I suspect I’ll be on some form of insulin approach at some point.

    The Ford patent thing seems to be a bit of an urban myth, unless someone can point to the actual patent. Pilkerton produced a heated screen which Ford started to use in the 1970’s. Which explains why it also appears on other makes, like VW. It’s not been helped by some of the other makes that use them being owned, or used to be owned, by Ford. Obviously this doesn’t apply to VW. Patents last up to 20 years, so would have expired a while ago.

    More license agreement that Ford had rather than patent, remember them being on Fords only to begin (early 90s) had a one on my K plate Sierra, and then to brands owned by Ford (Lincoln, Mercury, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo, Land Rover).

    This ties up with that memory: Quick clear

    From the picture, aren’t you measuring in parallel the short orange “jumper” from “+” to “8A”? Which would be taking an amount of current linked to the internal resistance of the meter vs “zero” for the jumper?

    Not for dogs, but we’ve used one for our two cats (Kittyangels). Person comes round twice a day (and unless there’s an issue, it’s the same person). Feeds and waters the cats, clears the litter trays, opens and closes the curtains/blinds at the front of the house as appropriate, and sends multiple videos on WhatsApp showing us that they are ok. They (the cats) are kept in whilst we are away (our choice).

    The first thing you should set up should be your stereo, play your favourite song at loud volume and do your unpacking to this song. The first piece of furniture to set up should be your bed. Your first night’s meal should be a takeaway, it’s the law.

    Stereo should be second, first thing is the kettle. And take a pack of toilet roll with you.

    If you are going to mandate it, what is the penalty for not complying? And is that really a path you want to go down?

    Not having an answer to the “Or else what?”, that is backed up by the policy (HR etc) is a recipe for ending up in a worse position than you are now.

    Is how a modern car feels when power steering isn’t working really the same as how old cars felt all the time?

    No. Steering geometry, rack ratios, tyre width all play a part in it. A car designed without power steering, would be “easier” than a car with a failed power steering system.

    @hexhamstu

    Specific issue was that my garage was detached from the house, so was treated as an outbuilding with a £3k claim limit for items not “named”. Items only had to be named if over £1k. Only one of my bikes exceeded this, which ironically was not one of the ones taken. I got the full claim (£6.5k less excess), as the recording had me repeatedly asking whether multiple bikes all under the named limit would be covered when stored in the garage with suitable locks, to which the answer was yes.

    Check the fine print of your policy, and read as if you were trying to avoid paying out.

    @benp1

    I now insure my bikes etc. via separate policy with Bikmo, which also covers away from home. They also extended the cover at no extra cost to cover storage facility when I was moving house. They are not listed on my home contents.

    My claim through the AA home insurance was painful. Tried to wriggle out on outbuildings limit, which was not properly explained at time of taking out the policy, despite me asking and explaining several times that whilst only one bike exceeded the named item value (and was therefore covered), the other rest of the claim should be capped. They went back to voice recordings when policy taken out, and settled for full claim less expenses. Apparently they do not expect the person selling you the policy to understand the policy they are selling.

    Claim then went to Wheelies, who were actually really good. They asked for details of the bikes stolen, and very quickly realised that cash settlement would be more cost effective replacing with new (most of the bikes had been built up from parts be me rather than off the shelf) and approx 1/3 of the claim was for parts, not bikes.

    Having all the email/receipts from purchases, be that shops or eBay certainly helped evidence the value of the claim – yes I rally did pay £110 for a pristine/barely used set of M900 mechs, and only £275 for a an early 80s second hand Witcomb steel road frame with 1st gen Dura-ace mechs – maybe I should have stung them for a brand new custom steel frame and Dura-ace group set.

    Won’t have anything to do with AA Insurance since.
