Garage door could do with a lick of paint. And cranks aren’t parallel with the floor…Do you have to take oxygen and some sherpa’s when you climb up there?

I’ve been using some bontrager jones semi slicks. Plenty of grip both on road and off.Similar situation to you regards commute on/off road

Small adjustable spanner on the flat bits or if you’re careful pliers. Don’t need to be any tighter than finger tight with the tool.

You should have pulled your old man out of the bottom of your shorts and had a pee as you were riding along…he’d have dropped back then!!!

Tinsy I didn’t want to imply anything regarding the quality of Hope products as i’m one of there biggest fans..just trying to get to the bottom of it and throw a few things in the pot for folks who might know a bit than me. I think Hope would certainly pick up on something like that, maybe ‘manufacturing defect’ is the wrong phrase….replace with ‘ material defect’……

I knew wooden bikes were the answer…never heard of galvanic corrosion in the early 1800’s. I’ll get my chisels out!!!!

I wonder if its a manufacturing defect. Could the billet of Aluminium the brake was machined from have been faulty. We get aluminium extrusions at work that sometimes have faults caused by the material been so easy to recycle and impurities entering during recycling.

@kimbers…how much did you end up paying in tax. Post with current currency rates comes in at 210 quid inc postage.

@Stuey. Its the presence of oxygen and moisture that starts the corrosion.IMO its the lack of moisture and hence oxygen and water that prevents the inside from corroding.

“Aluminum owes its excellent corrosion resistance and its usage as one of the primary metals of commerce to the barrier oxide film that is bonded strongly to its surface and, that if damaged, re-forms immediately in most environments.”

“Another problem with moisture in brake fluid is that it causes corrosion. Moisture laden brake fluid begins to attack the metal in the brake system. Experts disagree on precisely how long this takes”

Me too. Stem/headset/brakes etc etc. Never has problem with anything and the spares list is just amazing. Be interesting to find out what Hope think.

I agree with Klunk. I reckon a tiny leak has run onto outside surface, fluid has absorbed water and began to corrode. Pretty drastic if the bike is cleaned regularly though.

Just found this. Maybe your fluid had some water in it?

“Another problem with moisture in brake fluid is that it causes corrosion. Moisture laden brake fluid begins to attack the metal in the brake system. Experts disagree on precisely how long this takes. Most agree between 2 and 3.5% moisture per year may be absorbed.

Much of the modern brake system is comprised of aluminum, a highly reactive metal. Oxygen in the absorbed moisture combines with aluminum to form aluminum oxide. This damages the metal components. Once the surface finish of hydraulic cylinders are corroded, they begin to leak and must be replaced”

Obviously this is refering to a car system but basics and materials are same.
Have you ever bled the system with old brake fluid…over time it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere.

Point is Hope use Dot 5 and this IS corrosive. I dont really want a list of which brakes use what…Dont reckon Beagle does either as he plummets headlong into a wall. Druidh has a point…mineral oil wouldn’t cause this but hope haven’t gone this route..be interesting to see what hope say. I’ve run a set of X2’s for a year and they show no signs at all of any corrosion or pad material build up.

but hope brakes use dot 5. Only shimano use mineral oil.

I reckon you’ve had a tiny leak from either the bleed nipple or the hose union. Brake fluid is very corrosive and eats painted surfaces and bare ali too. No way that was caused by pad material.

The freehub is ****. You’ll need to replace it. Cassette off which needs a chain whip and a cassette tool. Cone spanners to remove axle. Then a 10mm allen key will unscrew freehub.Pop a new one on and reverse…Blow up pic here

This is great. Makes you feel all warm inside and restores a bit of faith in humanity…Great to think that a few guys linked by a few million fibre optic cables can pull off a result….Hope justice is done and we all get to bunny hop all over the scroats who did it.

I’m thinking the same thing. Had loads of bikes over the last 15 years and the two that stick in my mind are a ritchey wcs tubed steel one and a triple butted aluminium Scott racing.I’m definitely going for a steel one and think the only way forward is 853 tubing. Its a Prince Albert or a Cotic Soul. Can’t really see point in you getting another Ali one unless you’re gonna spend megabucks. You’d be better choosing between carbon or steel IMHO.

I’ve been looking into this. It looks like your company have signed up to a deal with Evans who will run the scheme and fill in all the forms etc thereby getting all the business. There are various other ways of doing this. Your company could buy you a bike and you could salary sacrifice to pay it off. Advantages are same as other schemes in that it reduces you NI as well as their’s. Your company would have to set this up but the forms are pretty simple. Cyclescheme.co.uk run a similar scheme to Evans but it broadens the choice of shops and therefore bikes.
I run a small company and thought i might be able to get a new bike but for tax reasons I’m on min wage and if salary sacrifce takes you under this you cant do it. Hope this helps….lots of pretty straight forward info out there in www. land

Never been bothered if a bike is ugly or not….function over form. If you got it on pinkbike I nearly bought it. Used to have one and they climb like a mountain goat. JE James are knocking the frames out at about £450.00…..also Maverick stopped trading earlier this year so you might have a collectors item..talk to Tim @ sideways if you need any advice…thats where i bought mine from..top bloke

In reply to garriparate I cant find ral 1026 on my colour charts or stock sheets. I’m guessing its a yellow but what sort of shade?.The colour will exist but if there is no demand the powder manufacturing companies won’t make it.

Theocb…yes we do MTB’s…we work more on the industrial side of things but as its my hobby/obsession and I know what frames mean to folks I like to take care with them when we do coat them.Main issues are making sure pivot/bearing/headset holes are covered cos it can be a b@&^%$d to sort afterwards

I’m in the process of looking at doing custom paint jobs, as in the kind of thing you see on lorries with airbrushes etc. I have also sourced a powder coating process that looks like a wood finish too….beech finish bike anyone!!!!

Happy to answer any questions/resolve probs for you.

I think cb makes a good point. Why would you shell out big money for something if you have no idea about the character who is selling. A quick call and using your head can save a lot of hassle. Wiseprank has a good point too…don’t want to classifieds on here turning into pinkbike2…And for what its worth I would give the guy the chance to reply ( it is holiday season) before the mud slinging starts cos chances of getting it sorted then diminish considerably.

Have you tried Loco tuning. He’s the guy to speak to. He’s on here alot and did a spot on job with mine and mates rear shock. Good pricing too compared to the bigger companies.
