I’d drive it a short distance but not on a motorway or at the kind of speed you’d need to be able to drive 300 miles in a sensible time frame.

    Is Barnard Castle nearby?

tbh you’ve done well to find someone to come and quote at the moment. Decent tradespeople round here (N/W Yorks) are booked up for >6 months and prices are double what they were 2 years ago.

Following the standard procurement question, what did your other quotes tell you?!

With a southish/ midlandsish focus I’ll throw in some nice, easily walkable, interesting places:
    Oxford/ Cambridge
    Cheltenham
    Warwick
    Cardiff

I’ve had a 2014 Giulietta for 5 years and it’s been trouble-free except for a new DAB radio base fitted under warranty, a cracked air con condenser and the external temperature sensor seems to tell me it’s either +56 or -40 degrees C outside.

I test drove all the usual A3s, Golfs, 1-series, Leons and was bored stiff. I still turn round and look at mine after I’ve parked it. Do it!

Edit: I really wanted a Brera but went with my head and bought the Giulietta as a reasonable compromise :-D)

Yes, road tyres will be a bit faster but for me there’s more to it than that – on road tyres my bike feels so much better – its steering is sharper and it just feels less of a tank on the road.

For very short, the Coniston Gullies race is nuts.

For a bit longer, the Grisedale Horseshoe is incredible – some great pics here: https://fellephant.com/?p=3575

Someone on UKC summed it up nicely…

The UK electorate is about 38 million people

The Labour party membership is about 500,000 people

The Labour “left” say the Labour “right” isn’t ‘left’ enough

The Labour “right” say the Labour “left” isn’t electable

The Labour membership is in the grip of powerful vested interests – the unions refuse to compromise, Momentum seems to refuse to compromise

The 37.5 million non-Labour members watch on in disbelief at how myopic the ‘opposition’ has become, and how they only ever seem to focus on their internal differences – they ‘oppose’ themselves.

I don’t care whether Labour policy stands for £10 or £15. I don’t care because at this rate they’re never going to be in government. I would prefer that they focused on this ridiculous, corrupt shambles that currently occupies the Government benches and actually, with one voice, provided some opposition. When that happens, they can then get together and compromise on £12.50 and may one day find themselves in with a shot of persuading a majority to vote for them.

    And, breathe

I did a speed awareness course after being camera-vanned doing 61 in a 50 (bang to rights – I was overtaking a caravan at the last point before 10 miles of twisty road)

The North Yorkshire course guys said the upper limit for being offered the course was 64 in a 50. May be different for smart motorways but maybe not.

I worked in a family business that had done well – £50m turnover, 300+ employees, the original founder aged 80+ still popping into the office a couple of times a week.

I was in the gents and the founder shuffled in for a wee, letting rip with a shockingly loud fart. He looked me in the eye and said “better here than on the bus”.

    I had to agree.
