Thanks everyone. I’m looking for a few more parts and I shall build the frame up. Looking for a nice set of suspension forks if anyone has some they would like to get rid of.

Thanks Bonzo, thats what I was hoping for. They seem to be highly rated on here.

I was going to get an A2 but wanted something a little bigger.

I have an A6 estate. Just using it as a mobile shed really for my bike.

So what do the hollow molded plastic blocks do?

Thanks Marko. I definitely want to put them back on. I just can’t decide if I’d be best just spending the extra and get the genuine Audi parts. Cheap eBay ones are £70. Genuine Audi are £200. But presumably the genuine ones will be better quality?

No luck with scrap yards / breakers. They say most of the time the fork lifts destroy them. What’s the thickness of the plastic like between the cheap eBay parts and the genuine ones? I have managed to fine new pair of genuine parts for £200. That’s half the price of the dealer parts. Are the genuine parts worth an extra £130 over the cheap eBay ones?

Maybe I was being sucked into what the Audi parts department guy was saying. He said it helped soundproofing. So I’m getting the feeling I might as well buy the £330 cheaper ebay part then.

So it’s sounding like it’s best to have one on. How much sound proofing do the genuine parts do? I noticed they have this on them. I will have to see if I can get a used undertray. The new parts from Audi are a little much for some plastic that could fall off.

I’ve been driving it around and I’ve not noticed any difference although I did notice everything seems very exposed underneath. Audi want £400 for a set of undertrays. The ebay copies are £70.

Thanks hamishthecat for the info. I was curious, as they seem cheap. Seems like they could turn into a money pit.

So does anyone know. The 530d and 525tds engines. Are they timing chain or belt?

Inspired by the OP. After looking at those old 5 series estates. Seen a few diesels, 530d, 525tds around for not a lot of money. All seem to have 200K on the clock.

Whats likely to go wrong at that mileage on the diesel version? What kind of MPG will they get on a run?

They seem like a lot of car for the money.

Thought I would update the thread. Went to see the cheap Audi. Really amazing condition apart from the drivers side front wing, which was really rusty. Interior was unmarked and dry, boot was the same. It didn’t have a full history, up to about 125k. Also had what looked like an oil leak underneath. Overall car was amazing for the age. Decided to leave it. Seemed to be asking too much for a car that needed work with a short MOT.

Thanks orangeboy. I’m thinking its best to go look at the cheap Audi. They have a Seat Leon 2003 1.9 TDI at the same garage.

The Golf seems really expensive just for the badge.

So I’m still looking for a car. I’ve seen a VW Golf 2005 1.9tdi with 166K £2289. That seems like a lot of miles of the price?

Just found this locally on AT. Worth a look?:-

Yeah I’ve been thinking the same. I’m going to leave it and get something else.

So discounting all engines with cambelts. Which diesel engines have chains then? I know the 2.2 in a Saab is chain driven

So whats the ideal spend on a bangernomics car then? £1000. Do you change the cambelt on them? Or just run them into the ground?

£200 in 77K miles doesn’t sound to bad.

From what I’ve read they seem pretty bombproof. It’s just a question if I could live with the colour.

At least I won’t have to wash it!

Been looking for a cheap diesel estate for a while now. It looked interesting. Maybe a Passat is a better shout.

So is that an inherently bad design fault then?

Where did the water come in from Mike?

    Apparently yes. Special order.

The one I’m look at looks mint in the pictures. Can you post an ebay link on here? Apologises if you can’t

I was surprised I liked it. Got comfy quickly, engine sounded great. No lights on the dash.

bI checked the glove box, nothing there. I will call them tomorrow. But they were not willing to really do much. So odds are I’m going to walk away. Shame, great car and I liked it in the silver. Thanks John, Orangeboy

Only one key with the car. The key flips out and is integrated with the fob. It was all main dealer serviced with stamps. Could see nothing about a cambelt change.

It’s raising some alarm bells with me. 118K without a cambelt change is a lot, isn’t it?

I suppose you pays your money and takes your chances. At £1950, it isn’t exactly a lot of money really.

I tried haggling on the price this afternoon. But the dealer isn’t willing to budge on the price much, if at all. There is no proof of the cambelt being done. But it does have a full service history, all the stamps are there.

Plus the Audi will need a timing belt done. If you follow the rule of getting the timing belt done when you buy a second hand car.

    td75

Car is £1950. So thats £2750. It also needs a new key fob. The buttons are broken. Is that a good price?

The other option is to go look at a 2003 100K miles Audi A4 1.9 TDI avant Quattro Estate. £3300 But it feels so obvious.

Thanks John. I was figuring around £500 for a service and a timing belt. Plus it needs 4 tires as well. I like the car. But I’m concerned it could turn into a money pit. It certainly felt nice though.

Went to look at a Citroen C4 2006 Exclusive. Got a question. It had a full service history to 105K. It’s on 118K now and is due a service by the looks of it. I could find anything to say the Timing Belt had been changed? When should it be changed? Or have been done? Loved the car apart from that.

Went to look at the SAAB. Was nice apart from the rusty rear arches. Shame car was great apart from that.

Anyone owned a SAAB 95 estate 2.2 diesel? Thinking of going to look at one. It’s got 139k on it. Can you still get spares etc?

Not wishing to hijack the thread. Anyone had a 2.0 HDI C4?

    td75

Does that mean the Audi 2.5 tdi will be old school and not have one? Looking at either a A4 2001 or A6 2001

    td75

So does that mean the 06 C4 won’t have one either? What year is your Berlingo? How can you tell if they have one?
