My mx8 has one red spacer. Can’t remember exactly which sprockets it goes between but you definitely need it.
taxi25Free MemberSuntour and shimano 11spd cassettes work fine with Sram shifters and mechs. No need to change to a XD driver unless you want to try the Sram cassette. I went from 10-42 30t to 11-46 32t On my 29er. I’d say the later with a suntour mx8 is a nicer range of gears.
taxi25Free MemberYou dont like religion: message received. Can we move on now?
100%. Your very much the Pub bore on this topic Mr Woppit.
taxi25Free MemberI went yesterday. Cafal is diverted after the first climb from the toll booth. You come do some fire road then the final descent, about 30-40mins riding. Twrch diverts by the steep concrete slab, sends you down a steep loose rocky track then the final descent. I did both and had 1.30 riding, a bit disappointing really, but as I live 30mins away not a problem as such.
I did notice on strava some people did the full twrch, so trail isn’t blocked at the moment. But i’ve no idea if there’s logging going on over the weekend.
taxi25Free MemberLoads of good stuff already recommended.
At the moment I’m watching “the Vietnam war” really top notch documentary. Something you might think you know all about, but you don’t.
taxi25Free MemberMy wife’s parents hardly ever travelled anywhere, except around where they lived in South Wales.
My Mums from Pontypridd, one of her aunties only went to Cardiff once.
My next door neighbour has never been abroad, nor does he go on holiday. He can easily afford to just doesn’t see the point 🤔
taxi25Free Memberan apology would have been nice.
I don’t really like the term snowflake, it’s way over used. But here……………………..
taxi25Free MemberIf you get a good chainline sorted, adjust the B screw on the mech properly and adjust the gears correctly all will be fine. If you don’t do this it’ll be a pain !!
taxi25Free MemberHappy with the standard routing myself and don’t plan a change. But if you’ve done something that works for you great 👍👍
P.s
Bikes riding great, bit like a X/C bike with benefits, loads of fun 😊. I’ll be riding it at the Brecon Beast September 9th. Should give me and it a proper work out.
taxi25Free Member@ pigyn.
I’m at a loss how you’d get the rear brake internal. On mine the dropper goes in on the right but stays internal. You have to stick your fingers in the btm bracket, through a square hole and guide it up the seat tube (12″ multi jointed fingers help). The gear cable comes out just before the B/B. Not seeing how you’d get the hose from there over to the top of the L/H chainstay. In amy case you’d be then left with three redundant hose guides on the down tube.
Mines a 2018, has there been a change of spec at some point ?

taxi25Free MemberI know people like this OP. Our local bike thief is due out of prison shortly. You can try giving him a kicking if you find him on your property, don’t go OTT and you could reasonably claim self defence. It would put him of a bit, but not completely, drug users commonly steal of their dealers with terrible consequences. When they need drugs they just don’t care 🙁. But are you used to violence ? He probably is, even the most wasted looking junky can be a suprising handful. I’ve learned from hard experience, security and insurance work best. Get a solid ground anchor and a good chain, make sure he can’t just wheel stuff away. Let him know you know what he is, and keep reporting him to the police if he acts suspiciously near your home. And good luck, he will in all probability try and steal of you again.
taxi25Free MemberI’m 6ft, 33″inside leg with longish arms. It’s a large so I’m right in the middle of their size guide for large.
Fits great, it’s got a bit more reach than the scout 290, on that occasionally I felt a 60mm stem would have suited my better, on this the 50mm stem is spot on. I’ve got a 10mm spacer under the stem and with the 130mm forks I will try it slammed at some point. It felt ok today but, it’s worth playing around a bit.
Thats a 125mm dropper I could easily go to 170mm if needed, but when the shonky nukeproof one gives up the ghost I’ll get a 150mm one for it.
taxi25Free MemberGot home from holiday Friday and it was waiting for me.
Used everything of the scout 290 except the wheels and cassette. The wheels have American classic 225 hubs and I struggled to get a xd driver for it. So I’m using a suntour mx8 46×11 cassette with a 32t chainring. With the 42×10 xg cassette I was using a 30t chainring. As it happened after ordering the suntour cassette I found a AC xd driver !!
The pikes are 130mm, and after riding the bike I’ll leave them at that not change them to 120mm.
The frame looks lovely, the paint is thick and glossy and very well finnished. It’s proper boost, it’s really needs a boost chainset , I made the one I had fit, but it took a lot of messing about with the bottom bracket. I’ve got one on order so that’s going on next. The rear wheel works ok with a ebay boost converter kit, but both spacers had to go on the disc side, so it needed extra spacers for disc and a re dish.
Weight wise its 24lbs 10oz. I’m a weight weenie so a bit will come of that, but it’s a fun bike not xc race so just a bit.
How’d it ride. Well as with all new builds it started to rain as soon as it it was finnished 🤬.
First impressions are that it’s a proper xc race/trail hybrid. Much sharper feeling than the scout but as you’d expect a little less stable on rough descents. It climbs more or less like a HT race bike but is quite a bit more comfortable than the Scott Scale I had. It was as smooth on roots and cobbely stone as any HT I’ve had. I’ll have to wait for dry weather or a trail centre visit to really push it, but it was a promising start.
If your a winch and plummet rider, or only really enjoy the downs this probably isn’t the bike for you. I wouldn’t waste it’s allround XC/trail potential by building one up to burly. But if you enjoy riding the ups, hustling along on undulating trails, popping of reasonable lumps and bumbs, going out and just riding really anything, from an hour in the woods to all day marathons it could do them all.
taxi25Free MemberWith a family of your size you need plenty of storage, bite the bullet and get one of these. Problem sorted.
taxi25Free MemberLoved LOTR books and movies and The Hobbit movies just helped carry it all on for me so it’s a big thumbs up from me!
Me to. Way to much over thinking on this thread. I doubt even the biggest Hobbit fan doesn’t thing the 3 film franchise wasn’t a bit overblown. But hey it was a fun romp. Even the most corny lines “because it’s real” are just a bit of fun 😊.
If you think the film’s and the book are shit (they aren’t) why give anything to do with the Hobbit a moments thought ??
taxi25Free MemberAh, well, weirdly, it is! I’d been training for the Etape du Tour this year and what with hill reps and squats and dodgy steaks went up from my usual flyweight of around 70kg up to the more paperweight 80kg.
First time I’ve ever heard of someone putting on 22 lbs training for the Etape 😂😂. It would have been much better staying close to the 70k and just worked on fitness. How much fat do you have on you now, try and loose some of that for a start.
Light bikes feel nice, dropping 500g off the wheels makes the bike feel a whole lot more lively and eager to accelerate.
This all the way, I love how a light bike feels even though I’m more the Clydesdale these days 🙁
taxi25Free MemberSimilar to you. I had a bone density scan after a couple of fractures. That picked up a old compression fracture a bit lower than yours. I always thought my back was great, all I can put it down to was a sore back after jumping down from a wall several years ago. The 1 inch reduction im height I put down to age (58).
Dr’s opinion is that it’s historic, settled and can’t think of any reason why I can’t carry on as normal. So I do, still cycling road and mtb with some Motocross thrown in as well. But as ever every case is different, get it properly checked talk to your Dr and go from there.
taxi25Free MemberDon’t really like the stacks that much but they’re nicer to look at than a sign saying ‘STONE STACKING PROHIBITED’ would be
This a thousand times. !!
taxi25Free MemberPlease keep us updated with the build
Will do, it’ll be mostly a straight swap of the stuff from my nukeproof scout 290 pro to begin with. I’ve got a nice carbon rimed wheel set to go on aswell. I’m away nxt week so I’ll post a pic and first impressions the week after.
Poah, your dead right mate, keep up the good work we all need someone to tell us how it is.👍👍
taxi25Free MemberIndeed 😬😬
I was never comfortable doing it no matter how many times we went down. Went and had a look at it Tuesday, and thats all I did look 😖
taxi25Free MemberDrop of death is just by the bottom of the cable climb. Not really very tecnical, just a very steep few seconds of complete terror 😨😨
Some good technica stuff in the woods beyond the Maenllwyd. Ask James about Garlic lane 😂
taxi25Free MemberDoes he want to buy some magic beans?
Only if your intersted in a cow he wants rid of. 😉
taxi25Free MemberYour still not making sense tdog. Is a “brochure special” any of the peg bike rather than a custom made frame ? Well if you think £1100 for a bike frame is outrageous you must live in a world of outrage !! What do you think of the £3000 a friend of mine paid for a “of the peg” fishing pole.
taxi25Free MemberI don’t have to ride that particular frame to know it not worth the money.
So you don’t know what your talking about then, fair enough at least you’ve admitted it 👍
Don’t know about defensive, but I’ve put my hard earned down and some guy on the internet who hasn’t ridden or very likely even seen one in the flesh is telling my I’ve wasted my money. Hard not to ask them why.
As far as buyer remorse goes I don’t do it. The remorse will come if it rides like a dog and it doesn’t click for me 🙁 Even then I’d get over it real quick and move onto something new 😀😀
taxi25Free MemberHow are they overpriced poah ?
At £1800 they were a bit pricey for my wallet. Perhaps not for others if they ticked all the boxes. At £1100 it becomes an option for me. I’ve spent that on a H/T before, more than that on H/T road bike frames 😉. So are all £1000+ frames to expensive or just the Vanquish. To come to that conclusion surely you must have bought one or ridden one extensively and found it lacking.
It would be great if you shared your experiences on a thread discussing the bike.
taxi25Free MemberImpulse buy ?
Lost me there ?????? Your coming across a bit weird mate. Do you have anything usefull to say that might help people interested in the Vanquish ?
taxi25Free Membersave 2/3 and get a custom version with same geo if that fussed.
Transition get far too much credit for their toy frames
You could make the same argument about any frame then. Why bother with any branded bike/frame when you could just order the same thing from China cheeper. Only its not the same thing at all. I’ve got a Vanquish frame ordered from a UK supplier for under £1100. I’ll get it in 48hrs, full UK backup and service and the knowledge that I’ll be getting a quality product.
And yes every MTB is a toy wherever it comes from.
taxi25Free MemberAs someone has already asked “who build it up”, it’s not really clear in your post OP. If it was the shop take it back and show them. If it was yourself it’s down to you.
taxi25Free MemberI’ve bought and sold many bikes in carparks. Perfectly normal especially if you’ve done the meet halfway thing.
Only flag is the test ride, what’s he hoping it’ll tell him with a £250 bike in a car park ?? You just need to look over the thing for damage or worn out stuff.
taxi25Free MemberAlternatively, my dad had a van hire buisness. He or sometimes myself would drop of or pick up vans with a motorcycle. This doesn’t help if you haven’t a bike liscense or a bike 🤔
taxi25Free MemberNational Express – good shout….until I looked at travel times:
I did the same, I was gobsmaked 😲😲
taxi25Free MemberWhat proportion of the population do you think are a bit racist and intolerant?
I meet a few dozen every day. More than 52% easy 😉 People tend to live in a bubble. If your a tolerant switched on liberal those are the sort of people you associate with.
taxi25Free MemberHow would you solve this?
It won’t be solved properly.
we’d soon end up on an uninhabitable lump, with more plastic than wildlife and constant earthquakes bought about by fracking.
This sooner or later 🙁. Enjoy life whilst you can 👍👍
taxi25Free MemberHe say’s what most of us are all thinking.
My guess is the poster was reffering to the public in general. STW is a part of the public, but not very typical !!
taxi25Free MemberPretty balanced assesment here, but it doesn’t address the disc v canti debate.
