a classy mountineering climbing book…and or some nice paper maps?

alternatively if he visits his local climbing wall regularly, maybe buy a few sessions down there?

Ahhh DiY, Strictly4Groovers :D and still playing out

We had some fun after school rides when a sound system set itself up in our local ‘deep-house’ forestry sometime summertime 1991 and stayed there for about a week…

Lot’s of nice suggestions above, as a fomer resident I spent most of November (quite the most character building month in Norge) holed up in the delightful…

    Oslo Mikrobryggeri AS
    Adresse: Bogstadveien 6, 0355 Oslo

The place to go for a satisfying ale, (albeit costly) and civilised surroundings. Something that hasn’t been suggested, you might find a visit to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump & Museum fun, views across the City and Oslofjord are rather lovely brrr. train it back and go to the above for a pint (ahhh)

For coffee & cakes I’d reccommend, the awesome

    tangent – i got a few questions for you….

    summerwastin- here’s some sorta answers…

    1) in the pic am running an XTR shifter (using hope ‘matchmaker bracket’) + hope tech lever this works really well together…
As an additional bonus is that the reservoir of the tech lever offers a nice flat surface to rest your hand on when riding along depending on what angle you have it set at. I haven’t tried it, but am pretty sure the match makers are swappable left to right (i.e. the same either side). These brackets only work with XTR shifters (I think).

2)before I got the XTR+mounts I had squeezed on an XT underbar shifter and hope tech lever it was a but cramped but just about worked OK for me–but probably not as well as they ought to!

    3) When I was using older hope brakes, (before getting underbar shifters going) I also tried barend shifters ( with the cable hidden underneath bar tape). This was worked OK for shifting, but was pretty strange as they tended to be pointing at weird angles and I found it all a bit disconcerting. Couldn’t get my XT thumbshifters to work near the reservoirs of my old hope brakes either

Hope that helps, can always take a detailed pic and put it on here, if you need some clarification…

obviously it kinda a personal ergonomics thing, but I started ‘temporarily’ using H-bars when recovering from a broken collar bone, I found them very comfy indeed for my predicament, and then kept on using them, as the position seems very natural and useable for my kinda riding…highly reccomended :-) Mostly ran them on a singlespeed, however after some experimentation found a geared solution I was happy with (XTR onto Hope lever)…See picture below, (XT thumbie optional  )

if you choose the POC ones…buy em tight, as the leather streaches a fair bit (they also colour your hand when used in wet conditions!)

sounds like you have looked into this already, but on the Hope website there’s a instruction video about charging the batteries…they are quite specific about having the charger and battery plugged into each other before connecting to to the mains and switching on too charge…dunno if that might be the issue? Prob best look at the video,as I might not have explained it very well!

the full length POC pads I use come with buckle type straps + velcro , along with various ways of wearing them. Might be worth trying some on next time your in a shop

tis a shame they had to drop the blood to bring this out, but on the flipside, blood frames for a grand make me very tempted (if only they were onepointfive headtube :S)

have Orange really dropped the blood from their range?…where are these bargin £1k bloods?

Especially liking the looks of the toptube on the new Patriot…infact the whole set-up looks pretty sweet.

Two mtb things from earlier in the thread…

IIRC – Chris Chance of Fat Chance fame, never wanted to build a Ti bike as he viewed it as too flexy and inferior to steel in bike frames

Actually his FAT City Cycles crew, went on to build a titanium mtb frame , mine (no.13) was made sometime in 1993. It rode loveley until it cracked, suspect he was trying to overcome the issues decribed above about being too flexy etc!

Bontrager too, had a titanium frame in their line-up in the first years of the partnership with Trek in the mid-late 90s. Used too ride one of these as well, got it autographed by KB at a race once (much to the amusement of my mates) wish I’d asked him more about back it then…especially as that too developed a cracked weld eventually. Quite interested in seeing if Enigma can do some repair work on ’em.

Repairability of Carbon versus Ti? not an issue for sponsored riders, but something I’d add into the equation of which is ‘best’ for an given application

as others have said, the flattening / shaping of the straight part is fine and part of the design (comfy too)

I have two sets of the original straighgt extension model…if your really stuck fitting your brake levers around the curved part, I geuss you could always just cut that bit off!!! (I think Jones himself might even suggest this as a an option)

yeah was riding the event yesterday…
the trail were cool and so were the tunes! :D…although I much preferred the DJs selection to the band that came on after the prizes–but that’s just personal taste I geuss!

I’d really recomend Bad Ass Bike…they had a mechanic wrenching at the recent local 24hr enduro event (Clic24), and the guy did some first class work on my bike…v.impressed.

Also if your not familiar with the area, Burrington Coombe is a great place to visit for riding or walking / exploring (whilst your bikes getting fixed!)

    hilarious thread for a hilarious if retro-heroic frameset…maybe a
ti-flexstem is required up front

Just wondering will the drivetrain still function as a singlspeed if you fit an ENO set-up?…

    Hi Gareth,

I see Steve_b77 who posted first on this thread , has gotten in touch with you now…glad you got something worked out! :-) 7

Goodluck with the event!…hope the singlespeeding is a successfull experience for you’all

    cheers,

    Hello Gareth,

Maybe you have had reply already from Steve in this thread…otherwise but I reckon I’d be up for joining in the fun.
Have singlespeed, and can ride it :-)…unless it’s the same weekend as Glasto!

Rode a 24hr last year on my singlespeed solo (Clic24) and did 16 laps, just done the same event again this year but on my geared bike (16 slightly harder laps!?). So quite probably reasonably up for it. Will check back tomorrow.

    Cheers,

    John

I also used them for a bit, when I first started riding a singlespeed–alos promted by memories of them from early 90s MBUKs.

I found them quite cool, however they seemed to be quite tricky to operate when riding in the chuncky soled hiking boots / approach shoes I favoured for riding…Thinking forwards to now, I geuss a smooth soled approach shoe or causual cycle touring shoe would work well…but then so do traditional toe clips!!!

Hiya Mr a…fish, yep that was me on the Moots :-)

You might have already seen this but there’s a few new pictures on the Clic / Flickr website , including one of the tandem. 8)
Hope to see you next year…

Only thing I’m doing differently is to have some ales ready for the finish…strolled / staggered into the tea-rooms tent to ask for a much needed beverage @11-00am’ish to discover they didn’t have a license for then 8O…still a kind fellow rider took pity on me and handed me one :D

I met one of the tandem team in the fuzzy wee hours just before daybreak…dunno how many laps they’d done but by then they had retired from the event (I made a point of catching up with the guy again at the end to say cheers, as his enthusiasm got me out for another few more laps–including the all important sunrise one 8))

Supereme event :-)–thanks’ ya’all–, wonderful riders, fine dry conditons *thank goodness*…prehaps the hardest part for me was remembering to make the left hand turn onto Back Lane, and not carry on cruising / clattering down towards the Crown …

Enigma Cycles offer a refinishing service

Much cheaper than $400! Not used them myself, however am considering getting them to do some repair / resto work for me on a retro ti frame.

Dunno, but if you’ve not seen the website already … go check out http://www.RetroBike.co.uk –there’s a what’s it worth thread there–but generally just take a look at the classified sections for guide to prices.

I have 2 of those Royce BBs -both have lockrings with ’em- altho’ not 100%sure if fitting them is “optional”

Brompton are very versatile and fun machines…suggest you get a test ride on one before you buy to get the fit optimised. e.g there’s a taller seatpost for tall people etc. , and several handlebar variations, which again is best tested to find what fits you & your riding.

If your running flat or the the curvy riser bars, I’d really reccomend adding some mini barends it’s a great help climbing, and dead comfy for general cruising about.

re. Elfinsafetys comments: I think it is worth pointing out that the basic componetry like brakes & shifters etc. has been improved a lot upgraded over the last years (I myself run old Diacompe SS5s as the original brakes levers were v.naff. Quite a lot of other bike equipment has doubled in price, so the value for money thing is difficult to rate, but they do tend to hold the s/h value well.
Have fun :-) riding & choose a funky colour.

Plus I have been hoarding tinned goods and (old style) Deore XT thumbshifters.

    LOL @ Noteeth!…

For me these tough times mean I’ve been contemplating selling off my hoard of runiously rare retro framesets, & of course I ride lots whilst “Socially Notworking” on the employment search-side etc.

I used this set-up during the 2008 season when recovering form another collar bone injury…I had previously only run Jones H-bars on a singlespeed.

I found the Barcons when pluggled into the end of the h-bar pretty easy to operate, although consider that they do sometimes end up pointing in some strange directions depending on what gear you have selected. I also thought about mounting them on the forwards part of the “H” , however didn’t try this as the cable routing seemed smarted / smoother on the rear (and the shifters were easier to reach)

Another option would be to run barcons on a aftermarket thumbshifter mount–but check how the match up with the reservoirs of the hydraulic levers.

that is pretty impressive…I had no idea they would be that bright when I first read about them…
what appeals to me is the rugged build, and good looking fixtures for fitting onto you bike.

What would be really cool is if quite a lot more mellow model was made that was say actually intergrated into a seat clamp fixture with complete with batteries etc…
