It really annoys me that I am on PAYE whereas self employed friends (and people on here) claim riudiculous things and regularly exaggerate expenses to offset against tax to reduce tax bills and pay far less tax than me on similar incomes. That annoys

Lord Ashcroft admits ‘non-dom’ tax status

“Conservative donor and deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft has admitted he does not pay UK tax on earnings outside Britain”.

So you can post as many pictures of Labour politicians as you like Zulu-Eleven, but it will never change the fact that if the problem is tax avoidance, then the answer will never be Tory.

and remeber a condition of him getting his peerage was that he would become a UK taxpayer. so a liar as well as a tax cheat

IME chiros tend to do one x ray for diagnosis.

Again IMO / IME the key thing is the skill of the practitioner and the diligence with which they work.

I have had practitioners do the best part of an hour of soft tissue work then a few gentle manipulations. I have also been hustled in and out in 10 mins with almost no soft tissue work.

Traditional western medicine is rubbish at treating chronic back pain. manipulation would appear to help in some cases

    Giantjaunt.

To most people trained in traditional western medicine chiropractic is nonsense and possibly dangerous. Any company doing that sort of a sell would make me very dubious indeed.

Osteopathy is a different spinal manipulation technique that often is much subtler. Phyisotherapy is a different model again – more concerned with soft tissue – but one recognised by the western medics

I have had back manipulation from various folk over the years – the best IMO / IME spend a decent amount of time working on the soft tissues and any manipulations are subtle

I ride all the time. My bike is made to look as crap as possible while riding really nicely and reliably. I also have a lock that cost well over a hundred quid and weighs 3 kgs

I do feel slightly guilty at doing this to a decent bike

Edinburgh to Eindhoven in. dunno how far that is – 700+ miles tho. BMW R110RS – just the bike for the job. 12 hrs including crossing the channel.

It did around 200 miles on a tank – 2- 3 hrs a tank full
Stop for fuel, coffee and do it again.

Last time we had one of these threads TJ argued that he doesn’t cary anything as nowhere in the UK is more than a couple of miles from civilisation or a road, My counter argument is 2 miles is a bloody long way with a broke leg.

Not quite – I do carry a kit in remoter areas but it is questionable how much difference you can really make with a kit you can carry easily. What can you do with a first aid kit for the person with a broken leg that you can’t otherswise. Painkillers is about it. Everything else can be improvised

I certainly carry far less stuff than most folk and not even a mobile phone. The key thing is knowledge.

It does amuse me how much some folk carry for a ride around the woods.

Me? Mini pump on frame clip, Multitool, tube, couple of chain links, couple of small nuts and bolts, patches in a small seat pouch. food in pockets. Map in unknown areas. Nowt else. Why carry a load of crap you don’t need? All adds weight

First aid kit on longer rides into remote areas. Sometimes have a first kit to leave in the car if driving to a group ride

    Seriously?

Water. £10. an energy bar. 1 tube. Multitool. MOBILE PHONE

I don’t own a mobile phone. Just two tin cans and a bit of string. :-(

Nothing like the number of superstar pads that have failed. Its a known issue and his refusal to adress it is foolhardy

It is not libellous if it is true – and it is – this is a known issue.

Suing for consequential damages is however very difficult I believe and I don’t see this as a strong case as there are too many uncertainties

You certainly can do it thru “small claims” yourself. Can you be arsed with the hassle? It will be a load of grief for a very uncertain outcome

I would – but I think anyone who knowing sells dangerous components needs to be dealt with

Your other option would be trading standareds

The seals may be ok. probably that piston has come out and when you tried to push it in gone in squint. You need to pull that piston right out and then try to push it back in making sure it goes in square – it should be stiff but not need a huge amount of force.

You are going to have to bleed them as well

Of course it can be cheap – I spoend very little riding to ride most of the time with occasional train fares or petrol shares.

Less than £500 a year would be my guess on my spend

On road positioning – unfortunately the standards for the CBT / main test are not what experienced bikers / advanced trained ones use.

for CBT you will be told to keep left of centre of the lane. the correct road positioning is right of centre of lane.

Motorcyclist lobby groups have been trying to change this for years but unfortunately the authorities will not.

Same as they teach the “hendon shuffle” ie when stationary cover the foot brake so balance on one foot in neutral. so to pull away you have to swap feet to get the bike in gear and then swap back again to pull away as they still want you to cover the rear brake

accept the training to CBT standards then afterwards get a lesson or two to help you actually gain some understanding of real world riding

You don’t maintain a cartridge bearing hub at all – you replace the bearings once worn – every few years IME.

Try leaving a C&C bearing for ten thousand off road miles over years without touching it.

    TandemJeremy

crickey – don’tlike the sound of removing one ball – however there is a nmarginal decrease in friction with c&c – because of the poor seals and less seals.

I have one cartidge wheel that will spin for ever like a good c&c one. the rest of them are slightly more friction because of the more and better seals

Cause your tenant the same stress they are causing you. And no I have no idea if this is legal but so what.

It is not legal and landlords have gone to jail for it.

Harrassment is a serious offense and taken seriously.

Cartridge bearings are a 20th century solution. cup and cone are 19th

Cup and cone will not last indefinitely if you want a smooth play free bearing. If you will accept less than perfect they will. Cartridge bearings are either perfect or goosed – no slow decline. Once a cup and cone bearing has gone out of adjustment once it will never be perfect again.

I get many tens of thousands of miles of trouble free life from my cartridge bearing hubs – but I use good quality bearings and I do not remove the seals

Personally I believe cup and cone have no place on a modern bike.

    Same advice as before

Ditch the letting agents. they are not helping. seriously get rid of them ASAP

Advertise it for rent yourself and interview yourself at below market rent – this way you will get lots of potential tenents to choose from

Start eviction proceedings now. Not tomorrow, do not stop if the rent is paid.
