My 2008 13″ MacBook was perfectly fine except I was stuck on Snow Leopard. If it had been a 2009 i’d still have it. The 13″ MBP I recently replaced it with is awesome though.

Do you currently have a normal door that you want to replace or is this to be included in the design of an extension etc?

I’d like one for our kitchen, but it would mean knocking down part of a partition wall and then encroaching on the internal room dimensions with a new stud partition wall incorporating the pocket.

Coolant temp sensor is a common failure on the 1.8t as well (it’s probably the same part).

@ Bikebouy – the weight of the 3.2 lump is cited as a disadvantage over the 1.8t. Not driven a 3.2, but IMO the TT’s not really a car you buy for it’s handling characteristics.

The 20v 1.8t engine is an excellent unit and used in a huge range of VAG cars in various states of tune. I’d go for the 225 bhp version in a quattro TT plus the standard spec is better v’s the 180 bhp.

Main things with the 1.8t are:
    – MAF sensor
    – Coil Packs
    – Water pump (original plastic impeller version would disintegrate, jam the pump and snap the cambelt – so check for regular belt and water pump changes)
    – Regular servicing and oil changes with good quality oil are essential to ensuring the turbo is in the best possible shape.

These engines are very simple to tune and obtain big power gains, conversely doing so can shorten the life of a multitude of components. If you don’t want a modified one, make sure it hasn’t been. Can be tough to tell as remaps are the most common method and they can be ‘switched off’ so no way to tell if one had been used. However, remapped cars usually get other mods e.g. stainless exhaust, uprated diverter valve (standard item is plastic, modified will be alloy), induction kits, uprated intercoolers ,silicone hoses etc. Any evidence of these suggests a remap.

3.2 V6 looks and sounds better (especially with a full stainless exhaust), but I don’t think they offer much performance over the 225.

Is the glue on bare metal or a painted/lacquered surface?

If it’s bare metal, nail varnish remover (acetone) will probably shift it the quickest.

If it’s on a painted surface, try heat and/or WD40 and scrape it off with your nail.

According to my Neighbour (who’s just listed their identical house), the value of my home has increased by 32% in 18 months. When homes are in as hugely short supply as they are in my area, some poor sod may end up paying it out of desperation. This housing shortage is fueling the madness.

How about preowned/refurbished from a reputable dealer?

The syringes that most bleed kits include are actually single-use disposable syringes not intended for that use.

Bin it and get a new one. If it has has a threaded tip you need a luer-lock syringe.

If you have a very clean glass and very pure water, there’s a greater attraction between the water molecules than to the surface of the glass, so there’s no capillary action to draw the water up the glass and create meniscus.

There are loads of cheap cars with histories, why take a punt on one without?

The comment about condition being more important than history is valid – but they should be in combination i.e. I’d want to see a car in good running order and backed up with the service history to support it.

Of course, this car most likely has been serviced. Just the book was lost during the trade-in process and subsequent auction. If it’s really cheap and the dealer is backing it with a warranty, then it could be worth some digging e.g. contact the last registered owner?

I pex’ed a Golf and later got a hand written letter (how quaint) from the new owner asking if the cambelt had been changed as he’d bought it from auction and the service book (which was with the car when I handed over the key) was missing.

All sorted. Eventually got to Windows Update via Firefox and IE now working as well as can be expected.

It won’t open the Windows Update site either. Just wanted to see if the issue was fundamental or not so I’ll have a play later. Cheers for the replies.

Ooh, looks like John Lewis are price matching already. Could have sworn it was more expensive when I checked earlier.

I don’t think (hope) they’re x-Ray for passenger vehicles. They’d need to be v high power to penetrate steel vehicles so of questionable safety.

Possible radiation detectors? They definitely check all vehicles for radioactive material. My parents were on a coach that set one off. One of the passengers had been treated with radioactive iodine for thyroid cancer.

Amazon were selling the Tom Tom cardio runner for £99 on Black Friday. Might. Be similar deals in the January sales.

I’d imagine most decorators like dulux because it’s a brand that customers trust.

My understanding is that trade paint is a different formulation so that decorators can thin it according to the application.

Retail dulux is good stuff. Goes on nicely straight from the tin and covers really well. By contrast, something like homebases own paint is horrendous to work with.

Shock. They ‘oversold’ and couldn’t fulfill my order. Back to looking at Cube’s but not really getting excited enough about them to actually buy one.

Think I missed the boat here. Went to look at one yesterday, went away to think about it and subsequently showing sold out online. I had one sat in my checkout and an email inviting me to complete the process – thought I’d chance it, payment approved but fully expecting my order to be cancelled tomorrow.

I’d budget £150 per person per day for a kitchen fitter (on the books).

£200 per day is a VAT registered skilled tradesmans rate.

Any rot on the wheel arches? Both my old ’04 and my brother ’56 mkV’s went on all four.

Dealers/Stealers – it can vary from visit to visit!

    e.g. VW Dealer:

Had a light come on the dash – read the fault code FOC. On another car a SEAT dealer charged me £30 to read the code!

Had a major service there, no problems. Fast, efficient replaced some parts and kept them to show me the problem (I asked to see them to check).

Next service, recommended replacement of brake and suspension components. Car was MOT’d elsewhere about a month before with no advisories, so I took it back to that garage who popped it on the ramp and showed me there was nothing wrong with the parts VW wanted to replace!

The only thing I was ever given that I used everyday (until I lost it), was a Cross ball-point pen.

Apart from that, I’ve kept a universal plug adapter/USB charger which I take on overseas trips and a laptop bag. Everything else gets binned, in fact unless it’s in a welcome pack I don’t even pick it up.

Wheels and tyres are the obvious and will give an all-round more sprightly feel.

I wouldn’t swap the chainset. However, the saddle is probably hefty (the one that came with my TCR weighed a ton!), so there may be a comfier slimline alternative. Also, a new stem may be needed to get the best setup, so potentially a few grams there too.

(Oh, and 9.7 kg is 21 lb!)

Or, there is still an underlying fault but the fuse also blew at some point since you started investigating it…

So it’s losing coolant at a rate of 1 litre/week? A pressure test should register a leak of that magnitude.

Somewhat odd – did it really run out of coolant for the AA call or just v low? Did the engine overheat or was the only symptom the loss of heating inside the car?

No, the stripped down value is a total of the value of the used parts. The value of a custom built bike is likely to be significantly less.

You could look at what similar spec OEM bikes fetch on eBay – but I presume you’ve done this, think your masterpiece is worth more and hence the question.

The correct answer really is split it. It doesn’t take long and will realise the best return.

Loads of Golfs on the market. If they aren’t prepared to replace a battery and repeat the road test to your satisfaction before a deal, walk away. TBH, I’d be amazed if they didn’t agree to that – nobody will buy it if they can’t see it run under its own steam. They don’t have to fit a brand new battery, just swap one over from another Golf and replace it later if the battery test on the pre-sale inspection dictates this (which it will as it’s easier than dicking about trying to charge it and retest it).

Also, millions of reasons for a battery to die. Not something I’d be overly concerned about. Could be as simple as sat on the forecourt with an interior light left on.

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Possibly as a result of it standing for 6 weeks.

Is the throttle cable actuated or does it use a potentiometer in the pedal?

Cable operation is pretty much binary. Potentiometers can get dirty and given intermittent faults, but would probably generate a code if you can scan the OBD. My bet is still a gremlin in the fuel system that you’ve now cleared.

    For a start, you wouldn’t need £30k.

Just take your fool-proof method, apply it to the change from the back of the sofa and eventually you’ll have doubled your way to whatever sum you want!

My wife’s qashqai is ex-motability. No stamps in the book but I have a record of all the services performed which was supplied by the Nissan dealer who performed them.

Perfectly conceivable to have no stamps. Especially on a lease/fleet car. Just make sure you get some proof the work was done!

Is the paint lifting or is that just showing through the paint?

What did it look like with just the Leytex applied?

If you’re within visiting distance of the shop, get them to measure you up and buy the size they recommend. When it’s built and ready for collection, get them to set it up for you and take it for a ride around the car park. If it’s clearly too small/big, swap for the correct size – have you asked them if this is an option?

Buying a road bike online without knowing if its the right size is pure folly. In this instance, can’t you just approach as if it were an LBS?

    Define nice?

I spent ages looking for a ‘nice’ pair for my Wedding. Looked at everything from high street to vintage and ended up buying a pair for about £8 on eBay!
