How much boot do you need?

There are a few SUV/crossovers that may do the job nicely here. I’m thinking Mazda CX-5 or Honda CRV.

    Ignore the haters etc.

How much is it advertised for? If it’s <£5,000 advertise it locally. I’ve had good success with Gumtree.

It’s a relatively expensive component likely to cause a problem on a high mileage derv.

Assume both diesels? I’m guessing the Sharan is pre-DPF but a 2009 Galaxy might have one. If one is DPFless I’d automatically put that top of the list.

Also heavy cars like that may have been hard on their brakes and suspension. Check for advisories on the last MOT if no receipts for the work. On the test drive listen for any clunks or rattles.

    Not IME.

I can comfortably(ish) run a half marathon, something I wouldn’t have been able to do 10 years ago. But a 90 minute competitive football match would kill me now, something I did twice a week 10 years ago!

In the spirit of STW, I’m going to ignore your question and ask which engine/spec X-Trail you’re looking at?

IMO 1 and 5 are fine. 2 and 4 are dodgy, but I wouldn’t correct them. Only 3 is outright incorrect. I clearly won’t ever get a job with the Grammar Police.

Assuming you are starting the long runs this Sunday, you have 12 or 13 long runs to hit peak distance. I’d guess you’d want to aim for peaking at 23 miles. So you could increment 1.5 miles per week.

Personally, I’d ditch the Monday run altogether. If you want to do something there – maybe try a yoga or pilates class?

Every couple of weeks, consider some non-running cardio (cycling or swimming) to replace one of the midweek runs. This may help with injury prevention.

If you haven’t got a decent pair of running shoes, or yours are old, get a new pair now – not 2 weeks before the marathon. I find good compression socks also help on some of my runs if my calfs are still achy.

    Looks like tensioner failure

Sadly, this may be through no fault of the garage which carried out the work. It really could come down to how honest the garage is and how much good will they show if they can’t prove it wasn’t them.

Assuming a meeting of pistons and valves and subsequent head damage. A recon engine may be the most economical repair.

But of a nightmare situation TBH. You just have to hope the garage take it on the chin and at least offer a very healthy contribution. But, sadly even correctly maintained motors go pop sometimes.

That link to the instructions for assembly of the Malm 6 drawer unit contradicts the product information on the website. There it states the wall fixings are included:

We’ve got an Ikea Malm 4 drawer chest in the nursery. It stands 100 cm tall and came with wall anchors (which we use). Malm are the range Ikea recalled in the US because several children were killed as a result of them tipping forward.

Will any of the scratches polish out? I don’t mean with a bit of t-cut – but with a polishing machine and cutting compound?

Do the scratches cross any bends in the panels? If the scratch is all on one ‘face’ of a panel, it will be a simpler job than if multiple faces need paint.

Full respray on 4 panels is £1,500 – 2,000. But you will probably get dent repair companies who will quote £500 using their ‘system’. I’d avoid these like the plague for such a potentially large area.

    Get a decent chair.

    Get a sit/stand desk.

Get a proper DSE assessment with correct setting of desk height, chair arm height, keyboard and monitor position.

Get up and walk around every 45 mins.

    Get a back brace.

ACC is generally excellent. Collision avoidance is somewhat less predictable. I’ve once had it think a car coming the opposite way on a bend was a potential collision and apply the brakes. The problem with this was it freaked the hell out of me as I had no other sense of impending danger (as there was none).

Where it’s jumped on the brakes before I could react, it’s been fantastic. In that situation your brain is only a fraction of a second behind, so the warning beep and application of the brakes barely registers as surprising as your right foot is already heading for the pedal.

Have you asked the local Vauxhall dealer if they can get one?

Oh, and get a warm-up event in the schedule. There are plenty of sprint-triathlons that are pool based for the swim over relatively short distances (e.g. 300m). These are a great way of getting to grips with transitions and learning how to pace a race.

I’m assuming the Tri swim is open water? If so, check the rules on wetsuits. Typically, if the water is <14*C, wetsuits are mandatory.

Don’t take open water swimming for granted. Open water swimming and swimming in a wet suit are both very different from swimming in a pool, where you get to touch the side every 30 seconds or so.

If I were you, I’d join the local Triathlon club and get some advice there. They will have contacts and access to discounted group swim training both in pools and open water.

IMO it really only has a significant impact at the top level. I saw very little diving or any form of cheating when I played at a local level. Even the non-league matches I occasionally watch are largely played in the right spirit.

I can agree that some of the theatrics may have been a continental import. When i was school age, we associated such behavior with oversees leagues – it wasn’t something we particularly saw in the English game. At that time, it was more agricultural. Heavy and dangerous challenges were still an accepted part of the game.

These days, you have a mix of cultures, the fact that the rules of the game have changed and that the money in top-flight football has changed the stakes.

There are isolated instances where I think team/individual players behavior is disgraceful. In these circumstances the FA need to throw the book at clubs and players. But these are a tiny, tiny percentage of the tens of thousands of adults and children who play football fairly and with respect for their opponents and the officials.

No idea, I only know the cost of the private ultrasound we had.

Speak to the midwife, empahsise that the worry is causing the mother stress and say you want to come in for the baby to be checked.

If you still aren’t getting seen, you can get a private ultrasound for £100 or so.

Ask yourself what kind of parents you’re going to be. If, like my Wife and I, you are the sort who take everything with you ‘just in case’ (this has improved slightly as jnr. has aged), then you’ll need something Civic sized just for the kid and their stuff. As mentioned, modern prams (travel system type) are huge and will fill the whole boot floor of something like a Golf hatchback.

If you are able to go out with a backpack and a sling for the child, then a Civic will be big enough for the dog too.

Be aware that Yeti/Qashqai etc aren’t bigger than Civic’s. Most SUV of that size will probably have a smaller boot.

You’re on the continent and can’t get it?

A quick check of the ADR (road) regs versus IATA (air) suggests that if the seller can ship domestically, they should be able to ship internationally as the requirements are virtually identical. I’d need the MSDS for the actual product to check but I’m assuming its EN1950 for a flammable aerosol.

Of course, this doesn’t help if computer says no. Couriers like TNT will do the whole DG assessment, packaging and shipment, but I’d expect it’s £££ relative to the cost of the product.

Can’t you get a similar spray on contact adhesive locally?

Would a sticky valve be preventing the hot water reaching the TRV? The hot water pipe to the rad was cold even after the heating had been on for a couple of hours.

I guess if there’s very little flow through the rad, then the heated water can’t reach that part of the system very quickly?

Yes, they sound terrible at idle. I thought the noise was partly due to the injectors. But the sound get worse with wear to a cam chain and tensioner. I ran mine for 50k miles like this.

You need to understand the operating parameters of your cars DPF to make a meaningful assessment of how best to maintain its function.

I’d also suggest that extended periods in low gears at high revs on a regular basis could result in other problems. If you are regularly driving short distances and/or in stop-start traffic, a DPF equipped car is the wrong tool for the job. Assuming that 20 minutes on a motorway is the remedy to such use is false hope.

Running shop that does free gait analysis.

Running on tarmac is tough on the joints in any footwear. If your back is a real issue, you might want to limit the road miles and throw in something lower impact to supplement.

If you’re already working with a physio, take their advise too.

you can see the reasons for the anger, but why do they think Trump is the answer to their problems ?

They don’t (and he’s not). But he was the alternative on the voting card. He wasn’t an established politician and he’d voiced ‘policies’ intended to bolster the US domestic economy. He presented an alternative to the status quo, even if that wasn’t the one people actually wanted.

Are these systems a self-install job or is a central heating specialist required?

What kind of cost for a system that control both heating and water (non-combi boiler)?

    Cheers,

Interesting about going direct with the third parties insurer in the event of a claim…

What is the risk here? I’ve always thought the ‘correct’ way to deal with the situation was to go through your own insurer. Is there any risk involved with bypassing them and dealing direct with the third party?

I guess this completely sidesteps issues like reclaiming the policy excess?

    Tallpaul

    Admiral?

The path of least resistance is to use the claim management co. It sucks but in non-fault claim why should you have to arrange all your own repair and stump up the excess until when/if the claim is settled with the third party?

Sadly, motor insurance is an industry which feeds off the inevitable and this is simply an effective way of generating more revenue.

I have one that I bought a few years ago. Six months daily use in combination with physio and focused exercise made a noticeable difference to my posture I.e people actually commented that I was standing taller and straighter.

However, the brace was uncomfortable and I could only wear it for an hour or two at a time. I still pop it on occasionally to ‘remind’ myself what good posture should feel like. A quick google suggests there are better designs available that may be more comfortable than mine.

If you are serious, I’d consult a physio. It will take time and direction to get results. I wouldn’t recommend doing anything without a professional assessment/guidance.

Is it a small wheel with a high profile tyre and plenty of metal at the rim or a 19″ wafer thin rim with rubber band tyres?

If the former, then it might be ok. The latter probably not.

Personally, i’d just replace the wheel.
