I’ve used it without any snags.
It uses the old (and better imo) route around Warnford.
You can always upload it to mapmyride or something similar if you want to check it but I had no problems using it on an iphone 4 running memory map.

At the risk of sounding like a maxlight spotter, is that a KM220L (ie the 2012 model) or a KM210L (ie the 2011 model)?
For this years model most sellers (although not CRC – they are about £60 more than Winstanleys though) are stating that they don’t come with a headset.

I received and fitted the adapter and it sort of works…
There is a lot of flex which produces an unpleasant schreech when braking but it has held up for a couple of rides on the South Downs.
I don’t have a great deal of confidence in this as a long term solution and wouldn’t recommend it to others – I’m now looking to buy a new frame.

I suppose I was looking for a rule of thumb or website to answer that question in future but it would appear asking on here is the easiest solution?

I did a bit of googling and the current FSA aheadset seems fairly standard but I couldn’t find a definitive answer.
Does 520 tubing generally use a conventional headset or does it vary by frame / manufacturer?
tallieFree MemberThey’re both simpler (and therefore better) solutions but isn’t 80mm worth of spacers a little too much?
Or are you saying cut by 30mm and have 50mm of spacers?
I chose 30mm as that will give me a steerer tube length of about 200mm which hopefully leaves me with a fighting chance that the forks will still fit the majority of frames?
tallieFree MemberI used to play rugby, as back row forward, at a reasonable level and usually experienced 1 or 2 concussions per season. One year I wore a scrum cap (helmet) and received 6 or 7 – I forget exactly which, along with many other things about that season…
When considering why this was I came to the following conclusions:
1. I felt invulnerable when wearing the scrum cap which lead me to put my head in daft places or lead more with it.
2. Players who might think twice about kneeing or punching an uncovered head (mainly because heads are hard and hurt when you collide with them) see a nice padded scrum cap and give it a clout.
I stopped wearing a scum cap for the remainder of my playing career.
I can see that the same psychology applies to wearing a helmet on the road where you’re effectively increasing your chances of having an accident (because drivers are less cautious) whilst decreasing the consequences of the accident (because a helmet provides head protection); the challenge is quantifying the risk (more likely to have an accident) vs the benefit (severity reduced).
Having said that I still wear a helmet on road from habit and off road because it makes me go faster – and I like going fast!

tallieFree MemberI’d agree it’s probably just a matter of getting used to it.
Have you got the run / walk attachment? We put my daughter in it for short runs or just strolls to the park before going on longer rides.
If your other half can use it routinely when walking from the house it soon becomes just another buggy and you won’t have any dramas.
My daughter’s 2 now and she loves the trailer to the extent I get tears if I put her in the car to take her to nursery…
tallieFree MemberI did it in a day with a mate in June last year. We live fairly close so did a couple of training rides including Winchester to the half way point (50ish miles) in about 4 hours, so were fairly confident in completing it in around 10 hours…
We set off from Eastbourne into the teeth of a howling gale (20mph headwind gusting 30)and finished in Winchester 17 long hours later. I lost count of the number of people along the way, who told us, as we were pedaling in a low gear down hill, that the prevailing wind direction is West to East in the UK. It started to rain at QECP and with hindsight the decisions to do a loop then eat our own bodyweight in cake at the cafe probably weren’t the best.
I’d offer the following advice:
[*]Choose a day or direction that provides a tail wind…[/*]
[*]Nav can be tricky, waymarking is poor, if you’re not familiar with the area a bar mounted GPS / Smart phone might be useful.[/*]
[*]If you’re doing it with a mate work out a gate routine (we didn’t) as there’s one roughly every mile and lots of time can be saved here.[/*]
[*]Take good note of where the taps are as they’re the only water sources on route.[/*]
[*]There’s lots of good accounts on line – worth doing a quick google – the SDW Double site is an excellent resource.[/*]

tallieFree MemberI’ve e-mailed the chap that makes the TC adapter (Seth Clayton of B and S Fabrication email – nanoseth@yahoo.com) some photos of my rear triangle and he’s replied stating that he thinks his adapter will fit the bike.
On that basis I’ve ordered one from TC – their website says that they’ve been strengthened since the first batch so hopefully this, combined with the fact that this is for the wife’s bike and she’s under 55Kg, should mean it doesn’t flex…
If that doesn’t work I may just put V brakes back on – I’m not sure my wife’s that bothered but putting my old brakes on her bike was part of the justification for my recent XT purchase…

Just thought I’d but in here cause I’m using an A2Z adaptor without any real issues on an old Saracen frame.
I think that adapter requires a flat dropout which my frame doesn’t have – although I might try it if the TC one doesn’t work.
Do you have to remove the adaptor to take the back wheel out?

This thread on MTBR comes to the same conclusion as eyerideit and Gribs etc ie the A2Z mount doesn’t work and the Toronto Cycles (TC) Adaptor is the only way to go if you want to mount modern brakes. There are various work arounds suggested using older Hayes and Hopes or even a front IS mounted brake.

This thread is very similiar although there is some suggestion that the TC Adaptor flexes a bit – hoping this has been fixed by the revised design referred to on the TC front page…

Have I read the A2Z site correctly – that seems to suggest that I’d need to increase my rotor size by 20 mm to 180 if I’m going to fit this adaptor? That’s not a drama as I’m fairly sure I’ve got a spare 180mm rotor knocking about somewhere.
Eyerideit – do you konw what the clearence issues are – presumably it’s space to fit the IS – Post adaptor bolts (I’ll need a further adaptor as the M575 is a post mount…) without fouling the seatstay? The frame’s a XS WSD so if there are size related issues I expect I’ll encounter them…

The consensus appears to be that the Toronto Cycles adaptor is the only viable solution – I’ll order one and see how I get on…

I did need to trim the hoses but didn’t need to bleed – I followed this Shimano data sheet:

If no one’s got a Duchess does anyone have any experience of any Rose bikes? BM seems to have mixed reviews – frames might be a bit stiff?
tallieFree MemberSame here – bought mine nearly 2 years ago as a commuter / winter bike but it quickly became my ride of choice. Converts to SS (and back) very easily, is very low maintenance and is great on singletrack. Did the SDW in a day on mine and found the gearing fine – the 20 – 30mph headwinds were a complete PITA though…

Although they appear to be currently out of stock – the place we hired the canoes from lent us a copy. I didn’t find it that useful though tbh – you get better information from the websites listed above and various blogs and trip reports.
Good trip though – well worth doing.
