Sadly both are no more after my own personal credit crunch last year.
But the memory lives on.

Just weighed one of my MTE P7’s…131 grams on its own, 179 grams with an 18650 cell in.

Mine run for 1hr 5 mins on highest setting, but the mid setting on the 5 mode is bright enough for climbing / fire-roads etc. Alternating between mid / hi mine will last for our 2hr night ride on the same cell.

If you’ve got £150 to spend then lucky you. I’d go for the Airbike SL2, I think the Ay-Ups are somewhat surpassed now by the competition having some 600 lumens total from 4 lamps.

Why not include some lake jumping to re-kindle that good ol’ Malverns era…

My 04 SWorks Enduro is still on its original bearings/bushes, albeit with a tiny bit of play in the upper shock bushing now. Has been ridden as a main bike for probably 3 of the last 5 yrs due to SS & HT affairs. It carries a few battle scars but is still a superb bike.

My Mrs is slowly coming round to the idea of moving to the Oz’.
She’ll have to hurry mind, cos they shut the door at 45 & I’m 41 this year.

best of luck to you JoeBones, for making an honest decision.

Just to add, my original 5-mode P7 has been in constant use (bar mounted) since mid October, for commuting & weekly night rides, so has been in use for approx 70 – 80hrs. Still works.

It was my later 2-mode P7 that died. The culprit was my 3yr old son who left it switched on high, & stood it face-down onto a work surface in the kitchen. DealExtreme didn’t quibble over issuing a replacement though, service was very good.

I don’t think its fair to compare them to Ay-ups or any other dedicated kit. They are designed for a specific application, & having owned a Hope HID, I’ve no doubt they do it very well. The P7’s offer a good alternative for those of us not able (or too tight!!!) to spend a couple of hundred quid on some lights. If I had the money I’d use a dedicated kit, but the P7’s are good enough.

I put my 18 month old to bed last night. Kissed him gently on the forehead as he slipped off to sleep. Lay him down in his cot, snuggled him in etc.
A few hours later I saw a chap on the news kiss his baby son, much the same as I had done earlier. Only this chap was kissing his little one for the last time. Unlike my little one, who sprang into life at 6am this morning, this little one will never wake up. And also, unlike me, that poor chap will never see his little man grow up.

Now I’m no expert on what is going on over there, but what is apparent to me is the senseless & brutal waste of life. I know little of Hamas, & what they stand for, but FFS surely its time this atrocity was stopped.

Honest advice…if funds are tight, & we’ve all been there mate, join your local yahoo freecycle group & place a wanted ad for an old road bike. You’ll be surprised what people will throw away if someone is willing to come & collect, & probably more so if your going to get some use from it.

Failing that, Ebay / Loot / Bargain Pages etc.

16 miles would be a heck of a lot easier on a skinny tyre’d road bike than a hybrid / mtb.

Project Engineer for a manufacturer of pneumatic valves, fittings, cylinders etc. Our catalogue products, especially fittings to the HGV industry, have been very badly hit. Been here 14yrs & I’ve never seen it this bad. Became apparent yesterday when walking through one the machine shops. Those particular machines normally work 24-7, but were eerily quiet yesterday. Probably the first time in 14yrs I’ve seen them stood idle, & there is serious talk of going to a 4-day week.
Luckily we changed tack somewhat a few years ago & began to focus heavily on customer specific solutions that utilise our catalogue products where possible. This side of the business is doing very well, especially the semi-conductor (gas abatement) & medical sectors that I work in.

Hoping to add swimming into the equation…twice a week, 50 lengths a session. Whatever I do has to be based around family commitments. (1 @ 3yrs & 1 @ 18months = no time spare before 8pm)

Will endeavor to keep up the mid-week night ride(s). If not on the Chase then an “urban” off-road route I’ve cobbled up.

Was commuting on road bike & towing the kids to nursery with the trailer but to be fair to them its too cold, so have agreed with the mrs no commuting with the little ones till Feb.
Will hopefully strip the road-bike down for a respray now.

As for diet, cereal with dried fruit for breakfast, salad/fruit for lunch & snacks & a SENSIBLE evening meal. Above all NO snacking after evening meal.

Oh, & my mammoth tea consumption will be cut because of the Singletrack tea mug I’ve bought. Its like a dinky china cup!!!

Good luck to all.

Birches Valley is usually locked when it gets dark.
A few park at The Horns pub just around the corner in Slitting Mill.
I’ve parked in the entry opposite Birches Valley before now.
You could park up near the other visitors centre at Marquet Drive but its a bit quiet (car safe?), & pick up the FtD at its mid point.
If your on your own I’d say park at The Horns.

We park at the White House as there is usually some lorries over-nighting there, hopefully meaning the cars might be safer. That way we can ride the FtD or some (better) trails over Sherbrook Valley way. You could tag along with us if you fancy it, we’re not fast though & we ride for about 90mins max usually. (Just a mid-week tootle for us but if you fancy something different to FtD give us a shout).

No experience of a Bfe, but I ran a Pace303 with a carbon USE Sumo post. That was pretty comfortable. Was too uncomfortable with a Thomson on.

I agree with barney. You’ll quickly spin out a 32/16 on the road. The 42t would be better but you’ll have to mount it onto the crank on the face that the 32t was on.
You’ll also need some shorter chainring bolts.

I was thinking along the lines of one of these ipod things that has a small video screen. That should have a battery built in that could be charged from the car but not rely on the car to work. It would be better with a screen because then we could see what was on the rear screens for selecting what programs etc to play. Not sure if you can just play AVI files for instance, or if an ipod can be played through an external screen.

RudeBoy the boys are aged 3 & 18 months. Books with more words than pictures are not really their thing yet.

04 Toyota Verso D4D. Engine is crap, but practicality wise its spot on. Later models have better engines, especially the 180bhp D4D.

Just to add a word on my beam shot…
I’m no pro-photographer. I simply fiddled with my EOS350d until it took a pic that seemed to capture how the P7 lit up the path. There’s a pic from a Hope HID taken at the same time in THIS lot. If you’ve got the cash go for dedicated set of bike lights. Because while these torches work well enough, at the end of the day they are just torches…!!!

No inconvenience as of yet, but I registered on STW with my works email address so will probably have some spam to keep me amused in the morning.

I did register & post a “Hello” on BikeMagic…
…& quickly got some abuse by the biggest bunch of cock-sucking knob-jockeys I’ve ever come across on a bike forum. So I canceled my account ASAP.
My god what a shite-hole. Totally bereft of any form of intelligent life, & seemingly run by a few die-hard tossers waffling on about them having 100k members vs STW’s 31k.

Not sure about making P7 torches into dedicated bike lights I’m afraid. I sold my £200 Hope HID because the P7 torches offer more light for less outlay. They will last a little over an hour on a single cell & swapping cells takes a few seconds so why bother…?
I run with a P7 on the bars & one on my helmet. They offer about 1300 lumen for an outlay of about £70. Reality is an insane amount of light for the money, & mine are on the lower settings for most of my rides.

Shopping list below…

1 of these
2 of these
1 of these
1 of these (Bar mount)
1 of these (Helmet mount – if compatible but doesnt work too well with a Giro Xen)

Pic of my bar mounted P7 with an extra large ‘O’ ring I use to make it a bit more secure.
Pic of the beam from mine. I tried to get an accurate picture but I’m no pro photographer so make your own mind up.

Hope it helps.

I had to send a 2 mode P7 back, I was probably the chap z1ppy refers to above.
A lady called Evelyn at DealExtreme dealt with my return. They had my replacement ready for dispatch before I had even dispatched mine back to them, & as soon as I emailed them my proof of postage they dispatched the replacement. I received it about 5 days later.
Had a 5 mode & a 2 mode for about 2 months. No further problems whatsoever.

Depends which Hope hub you have. Pro2 / Bulb / BigUn can. XC hub cant be converted.
Just a case of swapping some spacers on the hub. Kits are about £15-£20.

Chap with us yesterday had a crank arm fall off, taking the thread on the axle with it. (Cheapo bike). Was funny, even more so when he pulled out a large pebble that he proceeded to use to bash the arm back on each time it fell off again…!!!

Played host to my mates mates from up Derbyshire yesterday. Quite a big group, for me anyway, of about 15 or so. A couple of occasional bikers amongst the group but I think all had a good time.

Did the Follow the Dog on Cannock Chase with a bit of an excursion towards Sherbrook Valley. By god it was cold. Bike was frozen solid from being on the back of the car. Spokes looked like them big aero spoke you get on road bikes. Forks had seized also as moisture had frozen on the stanchions.

One chap was on cheap full suspension bike & his crank arm fell off. It took the thread off the axle so it couldn’t be put back on securely. He had to carry a rock around with him to bash the thing back on every time it came off. To be fair the chap didn’t let if spoil his fun & he finished the ride.

And Happy New year.
