What’s it gonna cost you to replace the van vs just replacing the engine?

    This is what I’m thinking…

I’m reckoning £400 in engineering and parts.

Tell me where I can find this sort of price?!

Then there’s the garage Labour… 6 hours or thereabouts

They say if I can source one, they’ll fit it, gave me a ball park figure of £1300+ including the cost of an engine at £400 plus they’d replace the timing belt while they’ve easy access.

I’m still uncertain as to how to approach the situation, £1300 isn’t money I have,

I doubt I could get much for the van for spares & repairs as it’s the first ever Vivaro model,
£50ish from the garage scrap man,
    £155 online scrap collection.

I don’t get on with this van and who knows we could go the next 3 years with no issues,

The idea of a £700 estate doesn’t appeal either, I take it a petrol engine with 2k on the clock is just as much as a gamble if not more?!

Why are you no just sourcing a second hand engine with a warrenty from a reputable breaker ?

Cost I guess? How much for the engine and labor?!
sounds like more than I could supply.

And probably been driven badly also

To be fair the vans previous owner did fewer long journeys whereas I’m short sharp journeys everyday,
My driving isn’t perfect but I’m certain it wouldn’t have caused too much damage but I reckon the change in the Vans use has probably not helped.

It will be an endless money pit.

As will the £700 estate I buy as replacement?

    Thanks for the replies,

I’m going to have them strip the engine, if they come back with a sub £700 cost, I think I’ll bite the bullet and have the work done,
    Anyone know of any Shamans/exorcists?
Me and this Van don’t have a good history but maybe I’ve not given it enough time to prove itself?

Take it to a dodgy garage round the corner where two old blokes will fix it cheap if you have one?

I did but we fell out! :?

    Thought I’d share my update.

The wife and I went into our one and only chance of IVF (no way we could afford beyond the one NHS funded round) with one last push of optimism,
turns out that’s all we needed,
    One of the lucky ones,
Now 25 weeks in and getting as prepared as we possibly can,
Truth is I know nothing is going to prepare us for the onslaught of sleep deprivation, green poo and 18+ years of anxiety!

The one thing I find myself doing is evaluating my own childhood, how my parents raised me and what I can do to not make the same mistakes they did,
I’ve pretty much had one ambition in life since a young age and that is to be a better father to my children than my father was to me,
Shouldn’t be too hard but it’s something I’m extremely conscious of.

Any tips on being a good dad?

Also note that sand in the oil won’t last at all…
You’ll need a rubber/silicon based grit, normally used on boats, but its bleeding expensive!

I just did a job for an agency, wanted to clear the decking and paint some anti slip coating down, keeping the cost down, this was outside a small block of flats so high traffic, Within a week the two coats had worn away,

    Used this stuff

Expensive but does the trick very very well.
Easy to put down, very durable comes with really nice screws too!

I still work 30 hours as a learning disability support worker, the rest of my time is spent contracting property maintenance, I’m building client base as I learn (blag) my way into the job,
Its hard and I’m learning that I need a variety of customers as Letting Agents tend to pay in lumps sums every few months, so before I take the full plunge I need more domestic customers which is why I’m going down the directory route, friends and family will spread the word if you push them too.

Its the scariest thing I’ve ever done and I’m suffering from anxiety a fair amount but the further I venture the more I gain the confidence.

    Best of luck!

Would anyone advise against choosing a van with a rear tailgate door???

    Looks looky

Don’t like the looks of the Dispatches but this One looks in good condition.

I’ve looked into auctions but there isn’t anything worth buying.

Aren’t French cars/vans notorious for costing an arm and a leg for parts?

My Toyota Yaris was built in France and all the parts seem to have a large mark up on the Japanese equivalent.

My advice is to go to an auction and buy a lower mileage van

    Good advice,
    I’ll look into this.

A week or so on, I’ve still not made a decision as to which van let alone a purchase,
I’m thinking the size of the Vivaro trumps the comfort and fuel efficiency of the connect,

Has anyone dealth with Renault trafic or Nissan Primastar???

Are there any other major issues i should know about either the Vivaro or Connects?

    Self leveling compound?
I guess you’d need a couple of layers.

A floating floor could give you the option to use some insulation.

This is life, it’s not a practice. Live it.

    You can make the time.

    Me making time

Fact is I’m in a transitional position at the moment that requires me to work my 30+ hr job while working another 30+ hours working to get my business up and running.

    1″ = 2.54cm, so 2.1″ = 53C

So the “C” is actually equivalent to centimeters without a decimal point?

Of course, you’ll get away with something much slimmer if you want.

    28c?

What’s the shelf life of those polypin bitters?

A few days, Made shorter if you choose to have “Bright beer” the method in removing the sediment,
I’ve emailed them to see if they think it’s a possibility.

I’ve come to the conclusion that i’ll just take cans of cider

Used to enjoy it but the Sulphars that they add is getting ridiculous,
Ruins the taste for me and after a few of them gives me a headache,
Real cider is always good, Tastes great when warm!

does it have to be middleclass craft ale (dont get me wrong, I love a bit of brewdog but taking it to glasto is a bit of a waste) something like wainrights (tesco do it in 500ml cans) is my goto camping ale.

Funny you should say that, I’ve just come back from Tescos with a four pack of Wainrights and Old Golden Hen,

Going to leave two of each in the fridge and the other two in the sun,
    Let the testing commence!

Crate of wifebeater and a shedload of MDMA. Sorted!

I’d be inclined to agree but not great for someone that became reliant on 3 grams to get me through the day,
the last time I took the stuff I chatted up my wife not knowing who she was, Apparently I groped her.
Needless to say she doesn’t trust me on chemicals anymore, to be honest I wouldn’t trust myself either and I’d rather not deal with the home wrecking comedowns!

    Have to reignite this thread!

What about non three seater vans that can fit doors? A car derived van with a load length of around 2000mm?

I’m keen on Vivaro/Trafic but happy to go smaller providing I can fit doors!

    Any other suggestions?

All sorted, should hear back from the HMRC in the next week or two!

    use your car

I share my Yaris with mrstaco and she needs it as she works out in the community.

Thebees, Did you qualify in any trades?
I just got my NVQ2 in carpentry,
I’m keen to get some part time courses done in other trades, Plastering, tiling, plumbing, basic electrics etc.

    get an estate car

Not a chance, basically I want a van to throw the bikes and a sleeping bag in the back and head over to Wales for a weekend, An estate would never give me the same comfort.
Plus I’m keen on doing multidrop deliveries on the side.

Best of British luck to you !

    Much obliged kind sir!

Worked around it with a different name!

I seem to have been sent around in circles by HMRC,
As a new sole trader I’m to first register my business which seems to want me to set up my self assessment first, Needs my government gateway number/password which I can’t find,
Only way to order a new user id/password is to enter what my unique tax taxpayers number is, This I believe is only issued once self assessment is set up!

Can anyone recommend a site with plenty of coherent Self assessment advice and ways to deal with HMRC???

Thanks for the advice so far,

    Question regarding business name,

    Checked here for company names,
it seems although there’s a name very similar already taken as a Ltd, I can’t use the name,
I thought as a sole trader it okay to use a name already taken as a Limited?
