Really…that’s interesting, because my impression this winter has been that DA9000 is a little more susceptible to road grit and grime than Red 2012. Are you on the previous versions?

As Mashiehood said…SRAM Red…its better than Ultegra Di2 and Dura Ace 7900. If you are set on Shimano…and that’s not wrong, we all have preferences, then DA9000 is soooo much better than 7900 that it makes it look silly….

But as I have now also said…Red is actually best.

I guess also lordmerchant I did a bit of work with Rudy to start with to get her to follow me rather than going in front, so in spite of being fairly handy down trails I might well be holding her up. She knows the ‘behind’ command when we start riding, and just follows the bike. I didn’t fancy her stopping in front of me to see if I was coming…and buzzing her up the bum/running her over/breaking myself…

Nice work goon…I’ve been wondering about strapping the Garmin 500 on to her collar for a true speed test…. Initial test was her chasing me on the bike, but I need more accuracy and stats ; ) Heart rate monitor for dogs anybody ; )
Great picture, that is pure concentration on speed. Love it

1/50th speed sounds about right! Rudy is a pretty small dog – the collie whippet cross is certainly not as fast in a straight line as an off the peg whippet but she can corner harder than most for some reason. She weighs 11.5kg which I guess makes her pretty light on her paws – what about Holly? We trained her up (as I’m sure you did) with easy rides first on woodsy local singletrack first before going on to gravel/sand/rocks stuff

We have a a collie whippet cross and she has currently been clocked at 27mph by my garmin. Paws are normally in good shape unless she skids around a lot. She hasn’t ever cut a pad but has had a few slices and nicks. We do a lot of beach walking and running with her as well, so I’m wondering if the sand has helped her paws, and the sea swimming salt water helps heal up quicker?

Oh yes, great times. Three of us did it, left at 9pm got there at 4.30. Brilliant. Leaving London and the blinking red lights were amazing, the dawn was beautiful. I was left with the hazy feeling that only 24hour racing normal brings.

Best rider was the big chap on a 29″ singlespeed with a leg cadence of 120+ that was flying along at easily 25kph+. Strong man, should be in the squad for this summers games! Anyone know him?

It should just be used for climbs not descents? That would be easy for the boffins at Strava central to implement.

It’s great for uphill segments, it’s plain stupid for downhill. They should just make it impossible to create segments which lose altitude – that would be pretty simple. After all KOM’s are supposed to be for going uphill – I’ll even accept it off road as well as on.

It is a great tool to compare your fitness against other riders and does make training rides at least more interesting – STRAVA for training, the Jo Burt Stravasectomy for just riding along with mates….ie, no cadence, no heart rate monitors just good old fashioned bragging rights and banter at the end of trails….

@reggiegasket, that’s usually because you haven’t got enough moisture between the sensors and your chest – I give mine a quick splash of water before putting it on after getting 240bpm readings and it worked perfectly from then on

Also…80rpm is not spinning. Winter is the time for long slow spinny miles – which should be 90-110rpm, very good for leg speed. 80rpm and not really pushing on isn’t going to help you get fast this time of year. 80rpm and a ‘bigger’ gear sat down will build power but not leg speed which is what it sounds like you need to me.

Thanks for the info Composite, I will give it a try that way, it is certainly a nifty way of editing. Also I really appreciate the time you have taken…kudos

Composite – so do you always use the 720 60fps on the gopro as your standard? I note you did for your posted film (which was ace btw). Then import and edit at 60fps? Interesting, I’ll give it a go, I had always been told that was unnecessary but I do like the idea of reducing the rolling shutter effect.

I would also posit that a good mounting system is the most important aspect of creating a good ‘moving’ film. I find having a fixed ‘constant’ in the frame often helps – a bit of frame, part of a fork etc..

Just one tip from me…you only need to record at 30fps, the human eye cannot perceive anything faster than that. The 60fps setting is so you can record at 60, import at 30 and get super smooth slowmotion without your editing software going bonkers and jerky or trying to make infill frames…just a tip.

I think it is beautiful, and a great attempt – he was good on last nights programme so looking forward to seeing the rest.

But in the spirit of STW….

Would he have taken off if he was on a treadmill rolling towards him at a speed identical to his ground speed….

Thomson Masterpiece dependant on length 250-330mm is going to be 140-180grams…Looking at the pic you are going for a 330mm so another 55grams shaved off, but 60 quid spent…

Good point Onewheelgood – it’s certainly a cheaper option, just go careful with those tiny bolts. Mmm…I still have a Pace 130 flat bar at home…it was the bees knees for a short time.

mmm…they are quite light, certainly only save a few grams with a tyre change so probably more worth going tubeless and taking 200g out of each wheel…

As you say – seatpost, stem and handlebars – change to Thomson Masterpiece, Easton EC90 stem and handlebars, in addition, saddle and tyres, also go tubeless and use sealant and something like rocket rons….done…

interesting singletrack forum style debate on lights guys….the OP asked about brakes….any recommendations or just sling some more mud around at each other…

    bontrager speedlimits since you ask….

    swisstim

You can get way better brakes than 105. I would try Bontrager Speedlimits, they are seriously impressive in terms of feel and power. My stopping distances certainly seemed to improve in emergency situations without locking up wheels.

mmm…that’s what I thought as well, it did look very squashlike. Pointless test possibly.

I was actually more interested as to whether they tested a ‘sports drink’ or a ‘sports recovery drink’. In the programme they said that the drinks they used contained no protein…therefore milk was better. Now I could be wrong…in fact i’m sure somebody will say I am…but the Accelerate recovery stuff I have after serious riding has protein in it…it says so on the tub….so… did they test just a carbo sports drink (ie rubbish for post exercise) or a ‘proper’ recovery drink.

It all seemed a bit vague and rubbish to me to be honest…

Not meaning to throw a spanner in the works but….
I had a soloist for a year – I bought it on a bit of a whim from Red Planet – I loved it, it only slipped once and with the cut down tool I did a trailside tighten and it was fine….
However at the same time I was still running an Orange P7 as a singlespeed…and now…I have the same P7 still but no Soloist…I loved it, but not enough to get rid of the P7. I did get a little sad when I saw a good soloist example at ssuk but…you can’t keep everything and the P7 just rode more to my style.

Week 8 here. Titanium plate and 8 screws. Back on a road bike no mountain biking yet, pretty much full mobility, can’t quite get my right arm as high up my back as the left but it will come…now to get fit again. Just quick because I had a really good physio/bone whisperer. Good luck.
