I think the 355 is dated but that may work in its favour – less electronics etc? I took a 360 out and it was immense… surely the 4wd in the audi is a turn off for a track/driver experience? They let me get it to the point of the back end twitching…

Oh and the california would probably be nice, but not as nice as a 355 for a track IMO.

Not ridden yet (broken leg), but took my old Inbred out with those forks and 2.4" high rollers – to glentress red and black, then the wall ride 😀

    Hi

In my experience of student houses all side by side with wireless (and now), there shouldn't be any 'interference'. I did read some very positive reports of using a aluminium foil guard that appears to reflect the signal in the right direction and boost strength – if yours is in a corner, try it, it can't hurt 🙂

I think you should get her out driving more, it may be a matter of nerves?

I've ridden the alps DH and XC on a 120mm stumpjumper – and kept up with an SX trail rider 😀 you'll be fine, but don't be tempted to try anything you are not confident with (drops, jumps etc) – although saying that, you will be more confident after a couple of days 😉

Audi A2 TDI – I've got one, motorways are fine, 60+mpg, 2 bikes and loads of stuff easy, £35 road tax. Mint.

its hard to tell without pictures – £100-£140 maybe?

A wild guess, but it may be something in your diet – have you tried cutting out the usual suspects – caffeine, alcohol, spicey food etc?

Is it possible that you have the 'terralogic' forks, with a threshold (like specialized brain) for super efficient climbing?

    Hi

IMO it depends on how those miles have been clocked up (although I'd be trying to haggle on that price regardless) – look for tell tale signs, like seat wear, steering wheel wear, etc that may hint towards a lot of round town use. If it looks like it has been up and down the motorway I'd be less bothered, so long as it have FSH of course – particularly the oil changes.

On another note – have you considered an older car with less miles? I got a polo for £850 with 69,000 on it and FSH, its now 15 years old and has 110k on it, still going strong – my girlfriend is using it now! Bargain I think 😀

I own one now, I get good economy, a headlight bulb takes 5 minutes to change (yes I've done it) and there is ample space for 4 people and their luggage, or 2+2bikes. Downsides – buying cost and repairs are expensive, and the ride is bad (standard) or worse (sport suspension). There are plenty of polos with the same 3cylinder diesel engine for half the price, but they are not as good. Look on this site: http://www.a2oc.net

I'd only consider one with FSH, climate control and no accident history (aluminium space frame and panels are a hard repair).

    All the best!

Buy XTR and be done with it, or buy 520 and replace every 2/3 years if you really can't service them.

Food for thought on the pump then… I hope it isn't the fuel pump…

    Swalsey

    Ahh, but which connector?

    Swalsey

Thanks guys – the fuel pump must be fine as it drives fine when it does start (takes 10-15 attempts on a bad day, none at all on a good!)

tankslapper – I've plugged it in with a non-genuine vagcom diagnostics and the sensor in the dizzy was the only fault (engine timing, seperate problem stopping firing up at all but now solved), but maybe worth a proper job…

coffeeking – sounds good, I'll focus on a the flow metering I think. I've kept it serviced myself so I'm sure the filters are fine, although a coil is cheap enough to swap just in case. I wonder if it could be a fault in the ECU itself??

hora – I'll have to register but should be good when I do, thanks 🙂

    crikey – +1

    I'll be moving closer asap.
what happens though when you like the area of where your living?

you have to move because fuel prices, thats shit if so….

I meant that I'll be moving my job – currently I commute because my partner works in a totally different place. I can afford it, but I don't agree with doing it all of the time on a moral and financial level! I would think it's crap if I couldn't afford to commute say 25 miles, but if everybody commuted that distance pollution etc would be aweful, so I don't think you should unless you really have too.

I think its time to make a stand against excessive living, not the price of it!

I hope the high prices deter rediculas car use – like my parents driving half a mile to the shop! I hate having to use my car for commuting (broken leg + 36 mile each way) and I didn't want a job so far away – I'll be moving closer asap.

Don't go out alone anywhere you wouldn't seeing anybody come by for a while

I'm sorry, but that really is absolute nonsense. Some of my best trips have been cycling, walking and mountaineering in remote corners of Scotland where you might not see another person for days.

WALKING AND MOUNTAINEERING!?! I'd risk activities that safe blindfolded…

I understand you thinking it is nonsense, so I'll be more specific – don't go doing dangerous terrain at dangerous speeds in unfamiliar places. By all means, take a gentle ride on a blue/red route at a speed that you would kill yourself at, as the odds are in your favour! If you think thats non-sense, perhaps you would like to tell me what you would do if you came off in an unfamiliar place, couldn't move, contact anybody or wait for somebody? Yes, you'd die.

Obviously you have to weigh up the risks, and I will take risks and go out alone to familiar places, but since my incident I've decided I'd rather stay at home that die. Oh and I'll stop myself riding like my arse is on fire on every ride, ride within my limits, learn to ride my bike etc etc etc

Don't go out alone anywhere you wouldn't seeing anybody come by for a while – I broke my leg in summer in that situation and it was pure luck that the bone stayed inside my leg – if it was open, I'd be dead. It's quite easy to immobilise yourself and if you don't get mobile coverage, you can die very easily. Having to seriously think about my options at the time was traumatic to say the least, and I was 'well prepared' (like a first aid kit and a whistle helped my floppy leg).

I know thats what they deserve – I can't believe the 'authorities' havn't been capable of stopping these particular people!

Well I've pretty much came to the conclusion that the legal routes are an absolute joke… I can't believe they call it a justice system!

I don't plan to get physical at all, the plan is to go down (tuesday now) and keep them sweet in the hope that they will see me away – I'm even going to suggest I pay a 're-stocking fee' to cover their loss by posting my items I don't want. I think that's my best chance of seeing my money. I think I'll take your advice on taking somebody else too.

@samuri – if only I could give you the go-ahead, people like this would not be able to get away with robbing repeatedly! thanks for the offer, I'll kindly refuse 🙂

Regardless of outcome, I will make their life as difficult as possible if I don't get at least £150 of my £164.50 back, I won't let them cleanly get away with it! Updates after the meeting…

Thanks fellas – I plan to return the bits with a letter explaining that I want a refund (politely) and I'll keep a copy. I really don't want the hassle of a small claims court…

Its nice that people applaude good service, not just vocalise the poor aspects. I still don't think much of the Hartlepool halfords bike department… but I bet there are others that are good.

2×9 22/36 is the real mountainbikers gearing of choice. A 44 is only for road use and if you don't need a 22 you either live where there are no hills or you are so fit you should be a roadie.

God forbid anybody being fit enough to use a 44 OFF ROAD!!! I run 2×9 with a 32 + 44 when my leg isn't broken, and the 44 helps me hurt myself more becuase I'm going faster when I fail… 😀

You can try, if any fluid leaks then the answer is no – really the answer is no but I've succeeded with shimano before. Try not to over-tighten in effort to stop leaking though.

I've used Avid Juicy 7s and Shimano XT – XT wins every time. Juicys work OK but XT more progressive and MUCH easier to maintain, including hose length. Get XT – sod MBUK!

I think the extra expense and effort to go tubeless will be pointles as the only benefit you will get is self-sealing if something goes through the tyre – better spend the cash on some harder wearing commuting tyres with tubes that are more resistant to cuts IMO 🙂

I can thoroughly reccommend a Mk3 Polo, mine had been great and only needed wear and tear sorting – tyres, brakes and some suspension bushes. And you can get them for dirt cheap, so keep some extra for repairs etc. Get a 1.6 – only an extra 15hp over the 1.4 but much more torque, mine handles fully laden long hilly trips easily.

Guys, I work for one of the Edinburgh Bicycle stores, and I'll pass on some of your frustrations. I think some of you were probably beaten to certain bargains by people buying online or queing before 10am – I beleive the sales begin at midnight online.
