So, despite CK not needing new bearings for a very long time, and having better pick-up, people think that they are not worth twice the price? I think that they would be if they are going to get enough use to justify them. I own hope and have tired of the rear hub needing new bearings – they are not bad, it is easy to do, but I would pay for the cheaper running costs if I used one particular wheel a LOT.

My hope pro 2 bearings (rear) last 1 year, max. That in different roles too – road, mtb etc.

How often do CK bearings need to be replaced?

I’ve not seen that before and I’ll be grateful never to see it again. It makes me embarrassed to be a cyclist!

    Specialized Nimbus 26×1.5″

    Linky

Used for 20 each way commute in winter and spring – very very little wear, fast, cheap and no punctures. Don’t bother with armadillo, too much weight unless you ride glass and gravel a lot IMO, especially given that the standard didn’t puncture!

Have you posted on his for sale thread? Possibly an email problem. Also, have they used the classifieds before?

Yes you can use a slick, but because the turbo builds up heat, there are dedicated tyres with a compound that resists the heat better. I use a continental one, they last longer (I’m told, though mine shows little wear in months of use).

Why do they do this? Did you actually ride the bikes or just sit on them for photos Paul Burwell? Why don’t you rename the feature “first techobabble”? Don’t you have an editor to tell you to say what the bikes are actually like to ride?

To introduce the new long termers? I like the magazine, and I can accept that I will not love every aspect of my chosen read. Relax! (IMO)

You would only get an idea about the upper bushes. They begin to wear the anodising if they are not right, like this:

I’d send them anyway unless you are planning change the seals yourself. They will change the bushes too, and you can’t really do that yourself.

I’m pretty sure it is normal, and I think they have a top out protection mechanism that you are pushing against. All IMO

I’d call Mojo, but they are meant to have some slack when you are not riding, and this is taken up by the hydrodynamic lubrication. The only way to get a decent idea would be to lift the seals and have a look, but you probably should have already done this once or twice by now for normal servicing…

    Orange ST4? Just a thought.

It works because there are ports for the oil to lubricate the bushes for the hydrodynamic lubrication, and oil can flow past them. There is no such seal until you reach the wipers – the foam rings sit under the wipers and above the bushes.

Well I was born in ’86, and even I remember the first time I seen a MF – their downhill bike of 1999… those were the days 🙁

Swalsey, looks nasty. How did they remove the frame from your leg?

I undid the bolts, one nurse held me down whilst the other used bolt cutters and pliers. I kid you not. I may post the video some time…

TJ – yup, the new frame arrived after 4 months on the day I got out of hospital!

Try chain reaction et al and look for pad retaining bolts. Also, look at the madison website for a part number etc.

    + 1 speak to hope first… but:

Whilst my front is 3.5 years old and on it’s original bearings (still smooth), the rear bearing get replaced every year or less up to now. It’s not what I expected but I’m trying the genuine hope supplied bearings this time to see what happens.

You defiantly do not NEED any more bike underneath you. Take that from somebody who has spent a week in the Alps on a 120mm Stumpjumper, and rides the places you are planning on a 100mm 2004 model. Any more than you have will be a downgrade when it come to all round ability – assuming you plan to ride up the hills that is.

I had similar service from them – they replaced the cables on my 3.5 year old 2-LED system, including both batteries and the lamp, free or charge despite it being wear and tear. Legendary!

In return I recommend them to lots of people and spread the word…

Yeah I used primer first thanks 🙂

EDIT – I did not use etch primer, didn’t realise ‘etch’ was any different until now, however the primer I used was suitable for bare metal and the surface was thoroughly cleaned and roughened up!

Did you spray the crown as well and if so how did you mask the threads neatly? My Fox’s are in grey at the moment and want to spray the crowns black and the legs white. Sprayed a fair few frames in the past but with the current temperatures and masking required I may go and get it done.

I didn’t spray the crown but may do. I’m not sure what you mean by the threads as they are not on the crown, but I masked the rim brake threads and the inside of the disc caliper tabs using carefully cut masking tape. I used the old seals packed with toilet paper to keep the bushes clean of paint etc.

I take it you are single, with a spray booth in your kitchen

No, I live with my girlfriend, I have 4 bikes mounted on the wall in the spare room and she is strangely OK with my behaviour, including refurbishing her split rim alloy wheels from here polo gti 🙂

radoggair – stem has just been replaced with a zero rise X4, cable hose will be corrected with wider riser bars, and thank on the colour 🙂

Onzadog – yes I was tempted, but lacked the correct tools at home. I am thinking of doing them again in metallic black though as I’m not convinced with the blue, so may well do that!

HoratioHufnage – no they dried inside due to the temperatures up here

sx-xc – cheers. When I decide on the final colour, I will go for the decals, I agree that they look good!
