Pretty sure there’s two sides to every story.
    I may be wrong tho.

    Wrong. There’s three.

Mate, you need some proper advice. But if you want the random advice of people on the internet then get yourself over to the debt forums on moneysaving expert. There are people on there who deal with this stuff for a living and will point you in the right direction.
You do need total honesty from your MIL though or you’re just beating your head against the wall.

    Good Luck!

Be prepared to step over puddles of drool every time you leave it parked in a public place.

Middle aged man drool. If that’s your bag, crack on!
Not exactly a fanny magnet though…

5/ What would happen if she declares bankruptcy – is that an option? – NOT AN OPTION. SHE HAS EQUITY AND PROPERTY (CAR). THESE WOULD ALL BE TAKEN AND SOLD BY THE RECEIVER. IF HER ASSETS ARE MORE THAN THE DEBT SHE CANNOT DECLARE BANKRUPTCY.

    She can.
She can file for her bankruptcy, as can any of her creditors, but the judge probably wouldn’t accept the application.
It would be a very daft thing to do though.

4 years ago they were around the 10k mark for a decent average milage one – now close to £20k!

Dream on! More like £30-40k and ++ for a good’un.

Event fabric is very hard wearing and waterproof. Breathability is a moot point for any fabric with strenuous activity involved so get something with pit zips and a vented back.

Which version of the Panda 4×4 is better – oil or gas?
Potentially looking at getting one for the MiL – who really want a Discovery, but she’s not getting one.

Don’t know. I’ve only driven the 1.2 petrol, which is a sweet little engine if a bit long in the tooth. The Twin Air petrol is supposed to be a doozie, but neither oil or gas get anywhere near the stated mpg.
I have a green lane running past my house- not particularly challenging but it was fun to pass Land Rovers “on Safari” with a cheery wave as they stop to discuss the next section.

For most of the 80’s and 90’s.

I had about a dozen Citroens during this time. None had any electrical problems, or any other problems come to that. As for french rust, that was consigned to history when the pug 205 came out…

Italian electrics, though, fully deserve their reputation!

1-4 can be covered by getting her arse and yours down to stepchange or the CAB and talking about it.

No5, You could make her bankrupt or she could make herself bankrupt. She might lose her house and car (if it’s worth more than a couple of k) and she’ll not get credit again for at least 6 years. The council might re-home her or they might not (as she may be seen as making herself homeless,I don’t know). Guess who will be expected to put a roof over her head?

No 6 , WASH YOUR HANDS OF THE WHOLE THING! I suspect your wife is pressuring you to help out. Right? You need to convince her that it is BOTH your futures at stake here.

Whatever happens it will all be your fault anyway!

When I say branded, I mean notionally “posher” than manufacturer’s OEM –

Stick to genuine factory pads. If you pootle around you don’t want them to spend half an hour warming up.
Beware Euro car parts brake pads. Compared side to side with genuine Subaru pads they only have 2/3 of the area of friction material, which can’t be good in any situation.

OP, What is your missus’s view on this? If you decide enough is enough you really need her on side. If not it could get a bit sticky. I don’t envy your situation.
Is her brother the reason she had money problems?

All the advice about stumping up the £4k and wagging your finger “for the very last time”…
Ignore it! Your bailing them out is just a sticking plaster on a head wound gushing claret. Your MIL is in it up to her eyeballs!

Bankrupcy? If she should die before the debt is discharged, they would get to dip into her estate. Before family, which is crap.

All creditors get paid first anyway, before any beneficiaries, whether bankrupt or not.

What a mess! For starters you can kiss your £7k goodbye. It’s time to be hard hearted. Help with advice and steer them in the right direction, but they aren’t willing to be straight with you, so ****’m! Is the MIL, BIL etc aware that you took out a loan to help them or do they think you have deep pockets?

You really need some good, professional advice. There was a thread on here not so long ago about where to go, or you could try here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/

My old next door neighbour used to run his Shelby Mustang every sunday for half an hour before taking it for a spin. It sounded lovely but I’d miss half the Archers omnibus and the windows rattled so badly I thought at least on would blow.

Fiat panda 4×4 is ace fun for a small 4 x4

They’re enormous fun and brilliant in mud.
Despite swearing I’d not have another (2nd series, ’06) I can feel myself weakening.
A newer model, substantially quicker and with better road manners. Get the sliding rear seat model.

The only winter or all season tyres I’ve had that failed to live up to expectations were Michelin Alpin. Absolute shite, and also the most expensive; twice the price of Pirellis on the other car .

I have Life Assurance with Legal and General via Cavendish brokers. At the time it was about half the price of anywhere else as Cavendish charged a fixed fee and not commission. I’m not sure they’ll be so cheap anymore but well worth trying. They’ll do all the variants.

barns outside of national parks and aonbs can be converted without pp under permitted development,

Really? Wow! I didn’t realise that. Is that a local thing or nationwide?

    suburbanreuben

I’ve been keeping an eye on the lower end of the market. Unconverted barns with/without PP seem to have ridiculous asking prices, and there are hundreds of them! No wonder some have been there a year or more.

Have a look at the Subaru Outback….seriously. Not bad motors at all and offer great off road ability.

    +1.
Unless you’re going seriously off road an Outback will be fine.
Drives like a car and can’t be touched for reliability.

Less thirsty too, (not often I can say that!)

GPs now have a 2 week wait for an appointment. My mum suffered in agony for 6 months being unable to walk more than 10m before she paid for a private MRI and the cortizone injection we knew was required (she refused to accept private treatment for that long as she “believed in” the nhs). Took my Dad as long to get his medication changed as the better one with no side effects is 4x the price.

Find yourself another GP. They’re not all that bad, even in Surrey.
I could see mine today if need be. I could speak to him on the phone in ten minutes…

I really couldn’t be bothered with that level of micro investment for a £1300 return.

    I assume that’s not really the point…

Yeah, I’m poor, but if you’ve reached the stage where your portfolio is hard to manage you should consider a ‘managed solution’,

Choose a “managed Solution” for your portfolio and it is is unlikely to get large enough to need managing…

Hargreaves Lansdowne will convert your paper shares to an online holding for free. Others probably do too. To liquidise them through the registrar costs!
The first option may not be available if they’re held solely in your late father’s name.
    Whatever, send them Special Delivery.

First step is probably to ask your mortgage company if they have any objection to you carving up their asset. Probably not.
Then ask them if they’ll stump up the funds. Probably not!
