Small mining and energy stocks are all very well if you’ve already developed a nice portfolio over the years. If your small punt on a tungsten mine goes tits up and loses all your investment it’s no big deal as it may be just 1% of your portfolio.
If it’s one of three of four stocks you hold it’s a very big deal indeed.

We are now at a very interesting tipping point with potential for the US to move ahead strongly (markets are postive on Trump)

Indeed, but US stocks are already very expensive, so could it all be about to go pop?

The late Sir John Templeton often reminded us that “Bull markets are born on pessimism, grown on skepticism, mature on optimism, and die on euphoria.”

Donnie seems to have introduced quite a bit of Euphoria to the markets…

For long term investments, Scottish Mortgage are a reasonable punt, as is India. Buy and forget…

Quick punt I suppose, just to get a feel for it.

    Russia.
Their main export is Oil. OpEC has just agreed to reduce production. Non OPEC, inc Russia, has agreed too. The price of oil is going to rise.
EU sanctions on Russia are ending this year and quite a few smaller EU nations are getting pissed off with being shouted at by Germany. French president to be, Fillon, wants to cosy up to Putin, and Donnie J positively loves him!
It could go tits up if the OPEC deal falls through, but Saudi Arabia won’t let it. THey’ve had to resort to selling the family silver to break the US shale boys, and now they’re broke (relatively). Like a footballer with a gambling habit, coming to the end of their career…
There are plenty of ETF’s focussing on Russia, or JPMorgan Russian (JRS).

Soooo… if you had £500 to buy some shares, which ones? IQE?

Well they’ve just about doubled in the last few months so it depends on whether you think they have legs. I’m holding on to mine, FWIW…

Are you wanting a quick punt or long term growth?

I’m interested in dabbling a bit. How do i go about starting? what sites do I go to?

Open an account at http://www.hl.co.uk/ (other brokers are available but HL are the easiest site to use). Bung them some cash and choose your stocks/trusts/funds etc.
Funds spread the risk a bit, allowing you to invest in multiple stocks in one hit.
Take Tips from pundits or the bloke down the pub with a pinch of salt.
For the basics of how everything works read “The Naked Trader” by Robbie Burns.
    READ THE PAPER!
    Good Luck.

We bought a tumble dryer after first signs of damp.

A condensing drier, that collects the water for you, or was it vented to outside?

If I’m a burglar and I have the choice of two houses to rob I’ll choose the one without an alarm

And if you are a Burgular and you have the choice of 2 houses, do you choose the one with the alarm or the one with the dog?

Depends why you have it I suppose. Our neighbours (and us) have a police monitored one, their went off recently when someone got in their back door and Police were there in minutes, due to the approach they didn’t get seen and caught the two guys red handed. So that was worth it. Our is same and we particularly use it for external buildings like garage etc. Unless its monitored I’d say not worth it, at least then you pay someone to pay attention.

Makes sense. Instead of having wailing sirens which just piss off neighbours so they don’t check, absolute silence but alarms flashing at plod central might actually result in a few wrong’uns being nicked.

Yeah, the i3 I had needed plugging in overnight.

Which restricts the market to those who have garages, which is what, 10-20% of the population? Even less in cities, which is where electric cars would make most sense.
So yes, relying on early 20th century technology to recharge the batteries is, er, slacking a bit.

In the real world, the i3 (and LEAF/Zoe etc) all a massively more efficient than any comparable sized / spec’d ICE passenger car. My i3, even driven with no heed to economy does over 140Empg, and if you hypermile it, than 300Empg is possible. Pretty good for a 4 seat, car with a 0-60 in the mid sevens! (Empg is Energy comparison, CEmpg or Cost Equivalent mpg is roughly 3 times higer due to current lack of tax on ‘lecy compared to fossil fuels)

But do you still need to plug them in overnight?
What range do they have fully charged?

My MD bought himself a brand new Fiat Panda to save fuel – his other cars are a big Merc, 3 series BMW and a Porsche 911.

He drives the Panda the most!
Even the humblest Italian cars are more fun than German Company lease fodder. Pandas are brilliant little cars that just beg to be thrashed. Looks like I might be getting another having sworn “never again”…

I was thinking about buying one of the little BMW i3s. I was very surprised to see you still needed to plug it in overnight, and it didn’t recharge under braking or coasting with the assistance of the optional “get you home motor”. BM are still slacking a bit.

I think that people are getting more selfish and ignorant. There’s barely a trip out anywhere where I don’t encounter someone exhibiting these behaviors on at least some level. From the pushy drivers overtaking parked cars, forcing you to stop, then not acknowledging you to the twunts who gasp that they’ve forgotten something when their shopping is being checked out and run back off into the shop to get it. To be honest, trying to tackle these people will just end up in an argument or fight and that would allow them to delay me further.

Sometimes if I have got the time, I have simply stopped my car when someone is overtaking parked cars and not given way. A stand off then ensues where I just cross my arms and stare. It usually does the trick. If pushed I will give a firm shake of the head and mouth the word ‘no’. Small victories.

    ‘kin ‘ell…

Are you from up north too?
Just wondering, as it sounds like most people on here live in a different place to me.
Here in the most crowded part of the country these sort of incidents are rare as hens’ teeth. People tend to get on with each other.
Can everyone posting please give their age, sex and location. Wherever you all are it sounds shit.

I had to drive a Peugeot 208 down to Bridgwater along the M4/M5 between 6-7am the other day. The top edge of the dip beam extended just a little above the top edge of the bonnet, in fact, when I put my index finger on the top of the wheel, the top of my finger was level with the top of the headlight beam.
On top of this, the light was yellow and pretty weak, making it a particularly difficult drive.

That’s surprising in a french car. Every Peugeot and Citroen I’ve had had really bright lights. When the domestic market was restricted to 45W and a yellow lense, they took some time to design proper reflectors.
