Head gasket failures affect the 2.5l. The 2.0 NA is utterly bombproof. Just check the timing belt tensioner and idlers have been changed, not just the timing belt. Kits are available from SKF, I think, so nowt shabby.

Bottom arm rear bushes are prone to go but you won’t notice until MOT time. Similarly some ARB linkages.

If there are twin tail pipes then the Y is a rust trap as are the fronts of the silencers.

I’ve had 5 subarus over the last 20 years, the youngest 5 years old, the oldest 20, and would have no qualms about getting another.

50k in premium bonds, 50 k in a high interest account, and the rest in capital gearing trust (CGT). Its a trust designed to preserve assets through good times and bad, which it does superbly, gaining even throygh the financial crisis.

Invest through hargreaves Lansdowne,  sticking as much in an isa as you can each year.

An interesting listen on the  autonomous vehicle issue. The upshot seems to be that robocars will work best if we get rid of those pesky pedestrians, horseriders and cyclists, etc…

Wickes used to do blockboard in that sort of width. It was nasty cheap white pine though.

Or other worktop manufacturers may do similar in island width

Remove the wheels and forks, send wheels separately.

Ensure that nothing, nothing, can move in the box.

It’s been a while since I’ve sent anything to Oz but you should be able to do a bike for less than 150.

Put your hard earned in an S and S ISA instead.

Shares have beaten property over just about every 5/10/20 year period over the last 100 years.

Entry and exit costs are minimal and gains are tax free.

    Far less hassle too!

    BTL is a mugs game.

    “Yes, risk of:

    1. Platform doing a TSB and having an IT meltdown

    2. Platform being hacked and money going missing

    3. Me being hacked / password cracked and money going missing

In all cases you’d get it back eventually, but if I can only loose 25% in one hit, I’ll sleep better than having 100% of my pension in one platform.”

+1, and ff is right about HL not being as expensive as it seems. I use iweb as well as HL and AJ Bell and Charles Stanley. iWeb despite touting themselves as a no platform fee platform will happily charge full wack on fund fees including entry and exit fees which can be 5% each!  HL have negotiated discounts with Fund houses which makes overall costs comparable to other “cheaper” platfoirms. Their facilities, features, variety of funds and ease of use make their platform a no brainer for me. If you’re buying foreign shares then few retail platforms offer such a variety of markets.

“Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.”

    for the win.

My diets been pretty good for the last ten years following heart surgery; living with a veggie definitely helped curb my fondness for bacon butties.

But, since I started adding greens to my morning smoothy  I have felt better than I have , ever, in my whole life.

Spinach, Kale, Chard, you name it, get it down in bulk.

“The scheme I was in allowed you to take 15% of your pension pot as a tax fee lump sum. But the taxman allows you to take 25% as a tax free lump sum. The advantage of an AVC in that situation is that it counts as part of the scheme, and I was able to put the extra 10% into AVCs then take it tax free. If I’d put it in a SIPP or any other freestanding pension I wouldn’t have been able to do that, as the 25% is per scheme. But the rules of each scheme are different and you may not be able to do the same.”

We all speed. Any driver who says they don’t is a liar. What is very concerning though is the OP’s wife’s lack of awareness at what is going on around her.  She’s best off off the road ASAP.

Avoid Cash ISAs. They pay bugger all.

Put it in NS&I accounts, I forget which, but they pay 1%, and you’re allowed £1k pa tax free in interest.

NS&I, your whole investment is covered, not just restricted to £75k. You can access it within a couple of days.

It’s often cheaper to send the wheels separately to the frame and components. Remove the fork and lay that alongside the frame. Use plenty of plumbers insulation pipe and ensure nothing can move inside the box.

AS an aside, if you have life assurance, ensure it is held “In Trust”.  Any payout can then be made in a matter of weeks/days instead of taking months going through Probate

Have a look at Ventile jackets on Ebay if you’re wanting something that doesn’t sound like a crisp packet. There’s a few bargains to be had…
