    OOh Ouch!
I developed gout about 15 years ago, possibly [probably] as a result of Beta blockers effing up my kidneys. I also had kidney stones at the same time. Never had either before, but while kidney stones elicited sympathy and oochy ouchy noises gout was a cause for mirth, yet it is the most painful thing I have ever experienced!
Having suffered with it for over ten years it finally went when I took up yoga. Whether it was the bending of toes or the twisting and internal massage of kidneys I don’t know but I had three pain free years until this time last year…
On holiday in Venice I woke up with a very painful, swollen finger which got worse over the next couple of days while the pain spread to my foot. Over the next couple of months it did the rounds of my body spreading to feet and hands , just some or all, while repeated visits to the GP elicited opinions that having suffered from it long term Gout was again the culprit. Yet it felt totally different; with gout I had never been unable to walk!
A chance meeting with someone while out walking the dog resulted in me stumping up to see a rheumatologist privately. While X rays and scans revealed Gout had had it’s effects on my joints he didn’t think it was the culprit and suggested a change of diet avoiding the nightshade family of veg, peppers, chilis, spuds, aubergines etc. I avoided these to little or no effect, and started a course of heavy duty pills, Sulfursalazine early this year. As of April I have had a minimal amount of pain and can do everything I used to do.
Get yourself to a rheumatologist. Mine is fantastic but he’s at the other end of the country to you. VersusArthritis is an excellent source of info…

Oh, and Cod liver oil can really exacerbate gout, especially in capsule form. Both fish and gelatine can really provoke it. Flax seed oil is a good substitute.

The FT! No bullshit, plenty of opinions across the spectrum. No need to nod in agreement, and the weekend edition is a little more light hearted.
I still wish I’d bought one of those soap dishes….

“I think the council kiboshed my claim by saying that the path in question had been inspected within the last year and this seemed to be a legit defence.”

Within the last year? I find it hard to believe that anyone could claim “inspected within the last year” is a legitimate defence.
Up my road they respond to pothole complaints usually within the month. Check Fixmystreet.com for whether this pothole has been reported.

“There are plenty of online suppliers. I ordered but am still to recieve some par American oak from British hardwoods 3 weeks ago. It’s for some shelving, they ask you to say what is for so they can select something suitable. Shipping was £20 on top of £144.”

    British Hardwoods are excellent!
In ten years of using them very regularly, monthly, for about ten years I only had to quibble about the quality of their timber twice, and even that was maybe one board in twenty.
They ain’t cheap, but they are bloody good!

My daughter is with Elephant. 2 years from passing her test the premium has dropped from £1100 to £700 pa on a Seat Mii. no black box.
I can’t fault them. She had an accident one week from a year passing her test. The other driver admitted he was at fault but then changed his mind. Expecting the worst but they sorted it with no penalty
    I really can’t fault them!

Excess deaths in the UK so far this year are around 60k. Civilian deaths during WW2 were 70,000 and that includes crown colonies so yes we are approaching WW2 levels of death if not destruction.

But nowhere near 1920 levels lost to Flu.

This has to be an STW love in at it’s very worst!
We’re all going to die. Get used to the fact , and CoronaVirus, in the UK, at it’s very worst has killed less than 5% of those dying in any given period.
Worldwide, CV has killed fewer people than die in Africa from infectious diseases every year. Do we give a shit? Do you give a shit?
It’s not just STW. It’s worldwide hysteria amongst the chattering classes…

Or if she’s living with the kids, pay them rent. This should allow her to transfer funds to them without appearing to deliberately reduce her assets, cos if she does go into home, with those assets she will be paying for it.

They’re great cars! I’ve had 2, a turbo and a non turbo, as well as 2 outbacks and a mad Leggy. The forester is the best of the lot!
Yes, they’re thirsty but 30 mpg is easily doable, and service costs really aren’t as high as everyone thinks, bar the cam belt and tensioner. If that hasn’t been done recently (inc the tensioner and idler bearings) budget £500 at least. Other than that they’re no more expensive than most other cars, and a lot more capable/reliable/fun…
There are plenty of makes of tyres available for them, so go all season and you’ll have a car that will get you anywhere you wish to go in any conditions.
The interior is utilitarian but very hard wearing and the seats are probably the most comfortable i’ve ever sat in- way more comfy than merc and BMW.

Handling wise, fit a Whiteline 20mm rear roll bar and links, and you’ll be on rails!
I’d have another in a heartbeat, but the outback will do for now…

Avoid the 2.5litre petrol, or the pre 2011 diesel. Subaru forgot to drill an oilway to the centre main bearing…

I’ve never bothered. Have tended to have working terriers or mutts with only a vague guess at their father, never pure breeds or designer dogs, and haven’t been far wrong. My last Jack Russell cost a small fortune in running repairs due to misadventure, but they were usually the sort of thing the insurance wouldn’t cover anyway (too cheap).
