freegan bikefascist you're probably right, nl was specific about "equivalent priced". it's not realistic to compare alfine to top end 3×9 as there would be a huge price difference and therefore have completely different customer base.

as for unsprung weight i agree, there's no point having suspension then have loads of weight the wrong side of it. my point to glenh was that i'd doubt it would have much effect on the way the suspension operates, several hundred grams may have shifted to the rear wheel but this is nothing compared to the biggest moving mass on the bike i.e. the rider, who could weight anything from 50-110 kg (4-9 times the weight of the bike itself), that's a hell of a lot of range for a suspension system to cope with nevermind the fact that it's not fixed in one place.

personally i'm less concerned about the range, as long as i can gear 1st to match a 3×9 1st i'd be happy, it would mean i'm missing my 3 highest gears but i only ever use those on down hill road sections, though i think the gaps are slightly bigger on the 11 (not so keen on that) so i'd actually only lose my top 2 ratios.

anyway, only 6 months to wait, i need to get some bits together!

as there's much speculation and not much in the way of facts about the extra weight of an alfine bike over conventional 3×9 set-up i decided to do some digging.

i've just had an email from charge bikes and it says,

"There is virtually no difference in overall weight (less than 100g from memory), between a duster 8 and equivalent priced duster with conventional gearing."

obviously there is a rearward weight shift with the alfine but this answers any overall weight questions.

love new minis, had a cooper when they first came out, switched to honda type r (fast but bland as a very bland thing)for 18 months then back to cooper s, however, clubman just doesn't do it for me. to live with it's probably the same as the 3 door, downside… very harsh ride, forget trying to carry anything in it (clubman is slightly bigger but still small), upside… puts a smile on your face and every journey is a mini adventure.

unfortunately i have to agree and though i would like to think that sir bob didn't start the band aid ball rolling with a view to accumulating personal wealth, i can't help but think that had he done nothing in 1984 we wouldn't now be calling him sir bob but bob who?

of course the media circus that now surrounds television has created a new bread of fame and money hungry scavenger. mrs mcgroo tells me that someone has written on davina mccalls twitter page calling her a media hoar (or words to that effect), apparently she's doing some charity walk for sport relief, very commendable and no doubt will raise some money but how much will she benefit with extra and continued publicity? difficult to quantify but probably far in excess of what she is helping to raise.

not knocking davina mccall, most tv people are at it. watching motd last night, alan shearer, could get any job in football but he (or his manager) ain't stupid, there's loads of money in football but there's more money to be made in tv.

glenh – I don't think I would like an extra Kg at the end of my swingarm – that's nearly a whole extra wheel and won't translate into great suspension performance

I wouldn't have thought it would have any effect on suspension performance as it's unsprung weight but stand to be corrected.

i want an 11 speed, was going to make a hardtail but having ridden full sussers for the first time last sunday and ridden full suss and hardtail back to back at cannock on wednesday i'm now thinking full sus alfine.

with a better range and price more comparable with derailleurs i wonder if any manufacturers will consider making full sus alfine models?

west kipper – Its WHAT they say that should be taken note of

have to disagree slightly, i think foot said what he thought and believed in what he said. i think brown and cameron say what they think we want to hear and don't sound like they believe any of it 8O

well at least it would be nice to have an explanation.

maybe if i'd explained that two totally unconnected people, living 60 miles apart had conveyed remarkably similar stories proving that the story is in fact "urban myth" and that i was just warning other forum users in a sort of public information kind of way, it would have stayed on 8O

rOcKeTdOg – snow had gone by 9am

i know but at 7 there was an inch or so and the skys looked full of it. working on the basis that britain shuts down when it snows and suddenly a 5 minute journey takes 1 hour then it would have taken 24 hours to get there :!:

tazzymtb – we'll be night riding this week and have spare lights

done geneva to chamonix a couple of times with easy rent-a-car. cheap and easy. give yourself extra time to get the car back (eating, traffic, getting lost etc) as if you're late they start charging, we cut our first trip a bit tight, had about 30 seconds to spare :!:
