The whole theme of the series was criticising men who are violent toward women. The first one was even called “Men who hate women” in the original swedish.

Almost all the strong characters in the book are women, and all the most flawed ones are men.

I don’t think Michael Blomqvist was ever described as unattractive and overweight, in fact he was supposed to be very good looking wasn’t he? He was older than Lisbeth of course, but how many young women fantasise about George Clooney, it’s not exactly far fetched. Also his other affairs were with a woman his own age and an older woman, so old fat journo shagging inappropriate young women could hardly be described as a central tenet of the plot.

in answer to the OP – definitely read them in order.

Reading James Ellroy at the moment – just finished American Tabloid. Very good.

+1 David Baldacci’s camel club series.
I also like Jeffrey Deaver’s Lincoln Rhyme novels.
James Patterson’s Alex Cross series are worth a look.

Have they really cast Tom Cruise as Reacher? That’s ridiculous.

I don’t think 1 thread per RWC game day can really be regarded as clogging up the forum given the right load of guff posted in this place daily.

Who’s writing good murder mystery novels right now? Kind of looking for something in the style of Iain Rankin.

I’m quite liking Jo Nesbo at the moment. The Harry Hole series:

    The Redbreast
    Nemesis
    The Devil’s Star
    The Redeemer
    The Snowman
    The Leopard

Haven’t read them all yet. I recommend reading them in order. I been buying them in the wrong orderby mistake it is annoying.

Back on thread: I’ve just read Jame Ellroy’s American Tabloid. Recommended.

    Front squat. Deadlift. Job done.
Over head squat is fun. Press the barbell over your head, hold it there, squat. You won’t need much weight for this one.

With the bands, How do you plan to attach the bands to the bar and get it up over your head, then back down after?

The elite crono fluid elastogel is good and quiet. Second FunkyDunc’s recommendation.

Another one? Didn’t they just remove someone within the last couple of weeks?

It’s the same guy, just being dragged over the coals again.

I feel bad for the guy, he’s always seemed like a decent chap to me and he’s been absolutely crucified over this.

Alpe D’Huez is amazing for beginners, big wide chairlift served green run area just above the resort is the best nursery slope I’ve seen.

I’d go package for your first trip. The deals they can put together with lessons, passes and rental included can’t be matched by booking your own.

I learned to ski and to snowboard on separate week long holidays with 5 days of half day group lessons for each, I thought it was a good, fun and sociable way to do it and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

I found you fall over a lot more in your first week on a snowboard, but you can tackle more challenging runs earlier in your development than on skis.
Flats are annoying on a board til you get good enough to carry your speed over them.
Drag lifts aren’t nearly as much of a big deal as they are made out to be.
If you fall do NOT put your hands down, many first week boarders with broken wrists.

motorists have been found to drive faster and/or closer around cyclists wearing helmets. Though they tend to give mnore room to pretty ladies regardless of whether they are wearing helmets…

In a single, oft referenced and seriously flawed study.
The “women” that were given more room were an aging chap in a long blond wig…
All the assessments as to speed and closeness of passes were entirely subjective and the observations of a single test subject (the author).

The findings of this “study” are very questionable.

I’m pretty sure he said he’s checked how much he would have to put in to cover his costs and so isn’t going to do it. Perhaps you couldn’t see that from up there on your high horses.

A neck brace isnt going to stop you getting a neck injury though. Hopefully it will reduce the risk but it aint going to stop it!

What? It is designed expressly to prevent him getting a neck injury. It can’t reduce the chance of an injury to zero, but to say it won’t stop him getting a neck injury is patently bollox, there are many instances in which that is exactly what it would do.

It does have garmin written on it. (at least, mine does)

Stupid question, but are you using the correct, Garmin supplied USB lead?
I was trying to download shedloads (over a year) of rides and it wouldn’t work with Carmin Connect, even though my laptop could see the device. Google’d it and apparently it is quite common – the device is very sensitive to the USB cable used apparently. I was using one from a USB HDD that works fine with other devices.

I dug out the Garmin one and it worked straight away.

Sounds odd I know, but it worked for me.

Vancouver and Whistler are immense, loved them both. I haven’t been to anywhere else in Canada so can’t comment on that.
Train ride through the mountains sounds amazing.

I would absolutely love to move to Vancouver, the Mrs won’t go for it though.

27″ thighs, 34″ waist. Used to be a 32″ waist with 26″ thighs (got a bit fat lately…).
Of course the skinny trousers don’t fit but it isn’t exactly a chore to find stuff that does.

I’ll happily concede that with a 30″ waist this is more likely to be an issue.

Jesus wept. It’s not like non-skinny trousers aren’t available anymore just because fashionistas are running around in their sister’s jeans.

Debenhams, M&S, GAP, TM Lewin – all high street chains that will sort you out with trousers/suits no probs.
Tommy Hilfiger or Ralph Lauren chinos also work.

You can’t have looked very hard. I bet you went in topman or river island couldn’t get in their skinniest trousers and thought “This’ll make a great story on teh internetz that makes me look awesomely muscley and tough and stuff” Even your missus has come on to say how awesome you are.

Mayrhofen in Austria has a big park where a lot of UK pro’s spend the winter. That may be considered “cool” by him.
I also really rate it as a resort.

Morzine in France also very good and has a pretty good vibe, lots of young brits there.

    I’m not actually… I genuinely don’t want it.

I only meant to post one pic of it but I grabbed the URL for the picture from the Ebay add and he’s stuck all the sodding photos together as a single huge image…

Best Council award. One word: oxymoron.

Best is a comparative adjective, they don’t have to be good, just better than all the other councils…

    My vote:
Wandsworth. Cheapest council tax. acceptable services. That’s all I need thanks.
