Bike had a lot of red in it but couldn’t hack the Fulcrum red metal decals so ripped them off.

Had a dig about in the Rockshox manuals and interestingly they don’t quote torque settings for the steerer. They tell you to refer to the stem manufacturer.

Looking at the Thomson x4 info it reads like 5nm is the torque whether it’s carbon or aluminium?

The forks do have the original expander with them btw.

Out of curiosity, is a Hope head doctor OK for carbon ?

    Right,

    current forks 184mm steerer

when pulled up with no spacers steerer protrudes 2mm above stem.

I’ve just contacted the bloke & the forks i’m looking at are exactly 176mm long = 8mm difference

Cant try it Andy as I haven’t bought the forks yet!!!

I’ll whip the top cap off and mark where the current forks are. I know that the ones i’m looking at are exactly 10mm in steerer length.

haha the maths indeed are ropey, thats what happens when you post the minute you get up.

    OK heres some accurate measurements:

headset face to face = 140.24mm

    Stem height = 40.6mm

Assuming that the crown race pulls up when assembled so its flush with the outer face of the lower headset that would be a total height of 180.84mm or 181mm

The centre point of the top cap screw is 6.48mm from the top face of the stem so that would mean that only half of it would be clamping onto the steerer.

    I think that make sense?

So, its actually going to be more like 6mm short of the top of the stem isn’t it?

Any recommendations of a quality stem with a shorter stack height for XC ?

Or even a one with a better clamping option to make up for the shortfall of steerer length. Keep your eye on the classifieds as i’ll flog the 0 x 70mm Thomson !

Thanks for the suggestions. They certainly seem more substantial than the eBay ones i looked at this morning.

Like the idea of the Amazon one where its hinged and locks the iPhone in.

This is the Superstar £20 chain guide I use as I have press fit BB

Initially I had my doubts about the durability but the bikes had some hammer and its fine

Sorry, didn’t realise that. I thought the universal clamps could fit the aero bars as well.
Also didn’t realise that you can’t lock the ends of the wingbars either, that’s another reason I went down the aerobar route.

Aye, I ended up drilling my wingbar rubbers so they have permanent holes in them for the t-slots.

Oh and make sure you cut/drill your wingbar rubbers right first time as replacements are £19.99 each. Ouch.

In hindsight I actually wish I’d went for aero bars instead of the wingbars as the ProRides have to fit in the t-slots of the wingbars which means the rubber strip either has to be cut or drilled to allow clearance for the 6mm studs that secure the carriers.

With the aero bar the ProRides clamp to them via a u-shaped clamp. Obviously it would be a lot quicker to remove carriers on these bars.

    Oh well

    Just rigged out the golf:

    3x 591 ProRides – £171 delivered from a Ford dealer on eBay!
Thule 969 Wingbars – £69 delivered – Thule dealer on eBay
Thule 1323 fitting kit – £25 from Tesco direct with free store delivery
Thule 754 foot pack & locks – £48 delivered – eBay (as new)

£313 for a complete system is a bloody good price IMO

Shop about and be careful about 591 ProRides. The latest models which I got have a higher weight & tyre width capacity over the older versions.

Boys and broken bones go hand in hand lol

Our little ‘un done his collarbone recently and prior to that knocked 8 teeth out of his mouth from a faceplant onto a kerb off his bmx. His 661 lid didn’t have a mouth guard.

4 hours in Maxillofacial & surgeons called out to put it right.

    Top guys & gals

    All good now though

I don’t know whether the HTII BB came as standard on the bike or not but if it didn’t, did you get the BB faced ‘n’ chased prior to fitting? Un-parallel faces could prematurely wear the bearings.

    Wow,

    SLX 44/32/22 chainset
SLX 11-34 cassette & Shimano chain
    X2 Shimano jockey wheels
    X4 Shimano resin brake pads
    Shimano mineral oil

    £160.84 delivered (action sports.de)

£40-45 cashback if you sell the new crank arms on here.

Rockshox service manual – Free download
Shimano service Manual – Free download

Icetoolz Cassette removal tool – £6’ish
    Chain whip – £10’ish
Reba service kit – £39 from TFtuned (includes enough oil)

So that’s £195. I think I’d be studying the service manuals long and hard.

Writing off another £50 for anything I have missed then your paying them £200 in labour costs!
I suppose it may seem daunting for a novice but there are plenty of good tutorials out there.
Jesus, the thought alone of being mugged for £200+ in labour costs would be an incentive to learn.

A word of advice if you go gas, don’t bother with Cannon cookers.

We paid £600+ for a stainless slot in which has been nothing but trouble.
Afterwards I remember speaking to a guy who sells cookers that Cannon are now owned by Indesit and manufactured in Poland. The quality is not what they used to be!

Funnily enough a work colleague also bought the same cooker and has had trouble too.

One of my sons gets an Audi diesel in the workshop for servicing twice yearly that’s got over 285,000 miles on the clock. No dramas with high miler VAG engines provided the oils changed regular.

I used the following formula for my latest bike:

X4 72 hour weeks + no social life divided by headaches + lowered immune system = new bike.

    Well worth it IMO

Polished steel will have to be lacquered. Period.

If I was going to do it, I’d do the aforementioned then put 3-4 laquer coats down before cutting back with G4 cutting compound.

    stu1972

You’ll need to use a polishing compound or soap bar as there known.

Bench grinder with coarse buffing wheel and general compound then fine wheel mop with a finer grade compound.

You will never get a mirror finish with the method you have described however it’ll be ok for removing the paint & flatting down.

There’s some good starter kits for various metals on http://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk

You could always go ghetto and use an electric drill with an arbour for the mop.

make sure you wear a face mask & goggles!!!!

    Good luck

Vista is a hog. If you really “must” use Microsoft then you’d be better using Vista with XP as a virtual machine.
Did they integrate this into the Ultimate edition?
    Failing that, VMware?

If your handy build her a hackintosh, that’s what I did.

I built the equivalent of an intel Xeon Mac Pro with a dell IPS panel ( which is the only panel type you should be working with for photography) for around £800

    Rock stable, fast & cheap

Say I get home tonight and want to watch the latest BBC natural history program, I live in Germany so iplayer isn’t legally available, and, and to be honest is pretty crap for watching high def programs, but that doesn’t bother me I will get my credit card out and don’t mind paying a few quid to watch an episode. But I can’t get it, the industry’s default protectionism knee jerk stupidity prevents me from buying it legally.
So they lose a customer and revenue source, but I am not alone, they are losing millions of potential sales every day.

That’s why people in the know use a VPN Tunnel. Google it.
