Interesting that Cycling UK is taking over the development of these Long Distance routes now that Sustrans has basically dropped the ball.

Anybody know what’s happening with Sustrans? I understood that they were trying to get away from their responsibilities for some of the old railway lines but I know that they are still fundraising as I was approached by one of their guys in York a couple of weeks ago

Shambles market street food is our usual lunchtime venue. Plenty of variety for all the family; I recommend the Morrocan stall while Mrs Stretch would go for the Indian.

I rode through the Lakes on Saturday night as part of an audax route, was surprised to see how many cars and vans were in the lay-bys between Coniston and Keswick. Must have been crazy during the day time.

Leave it and educate kids to leave it. They will be either miner bees or bumblebees, the nests aren’t normally large and they won’t sting unless they feel threatened. From Mrs stretch who keeps bees.

I don’t know how well veloviewer works on mobile either. I always trawl through the data on desktop, but then I’m sat at my desktop 8 hours a day anyway.

Slowly on my mobile but all the functions I use are still there. The explorer companion app is really useful if you’re into collecting the explorer tiles, again this can be slow to update after a long ride.

Ride with GPS works well for me too. I like the ability to change map styles from OS to open cycle and satellite views, it’s easy to find your way around it which also helps. I found it far easier to use than Komoot.

Thursday’s commute was my umpteenth soaking this month: soaked to the skin and battling with the headwind on the Humber Bridge the side wall of my rear tyre decided to go bang. A 15min walk across the bridge with the rain running inside my jacket and gloves, shaking with the cold. Put me right off cycling for a few hours. **** the weather indeed.

I’ve seen a few on audax rides and the folks that I have spoken to say that they are great for longer rides in comfort. But I wasn’t convinced of the durability after looking at them, especially given the price.
I think there is/ was a scheme where you can hire one to try and get the hire cost deducted from the purchase price if you decide to buy.

What’s the paint like? Does it need protection or is it robust enough??

It’s good, I’ve got a couple of stone chips around the BB which have marked the top coat only. Top tube has dulled a bit where frame bag has been but that’s the only noticeable marking.
One thing that I would mention is that I had a bit of difficulty with an almost seized seat post: it gets regularly removed and greased now.

Which one would you recommend to replace a croix de fer?

I’ve used my Secan for a couple of 600K audaxes with 28s on: it’s great long distance bike. Had it 3 years now and I’m still well pleased with it.

no performance management etc,. Definitely the case in the NHS.

As somebody who is currently performance managing a team member I can tell you that’s defiantly not the case here.

Somebody up the corridor has the routine of eating his (assume it’s a he) packed lunch in the toilet cubicle in the gents. That’s not a euphemism by the way.
We’re closing in on a couple of suspects but nobody wants to be seen hanging around outside the gents watching who goes in carrying their butties!

There are lots of lists of dumb HR questions online – things like ‘tell me about a time when you made a mistake…’

This one is about accountability and honesty. It’s one of the questions on our recruitment system: the answers from the candidates can be very informative!

Galbier Mistral for me too, I’ve got a couple of pairs of these and have ridden in temperatures down to -5 in them, usually put a pair of baggies over them when I heading out for more than an hour if it’s proper cold.

North East and Yorkshire looks flat

This morning’s briefing had an air of cautious optimism that we may be over the peak. We are still expected to receive patients from other areas without capacity.

My wife got her jag yesterday, the Pfizer one. She was very ill last night, very painful joints, nausea, weekness very flu-like and as a result is off work today. Seems to be an.uncommon reaction?

I had similar about 24hrs after the vaccine: I went to bed, slept like a log and felt fine in the morning. Hopefully the symptoms will wear off equally quickly for your wife.

Surely it’s cheaper to electrify as they build it rather than have to retrofit it? Seems a bit short-sighted.

Absolute morons, what do they think their relatives are suffering from if not covid?

There’s a patient in one of our ICUs (northern England) who came up from Kent after a positive test to see their rellys over new year – “its only like flu innit?”

So it’s fair game we get a chance to have a jab so we can stay in work, feel safer and help the public.

Spot on Olly, I’m getting mine this afternoon (NHS clinical engineer)I’m looking forward to getting shut of some of that anxiety in a couple of weeks.

Why are garden centres open? This has been puzzling me for months: there’s a large place not far from us that’s been packed leading upto Christmas and during the lockdown, it’s a day out for some folks.
I’m struggling to understand the “essential” loophole here

Yes, have been since March with the exception of single occupancy offices. Prior to November masks were mandatory inside all buildings but since November it’s mandatory to wear a mask anywhere on site.

I thought £55 for a case of 48 was about the normal price?
There was an offer in December that was £49 for 48 – that was my Christmas stash sorted.
    Have the prices increased?

    adequately ramping up hospital capacity

There isn’t a cupboard full of nurses somewhere waiting to be opened.

Absolutely this. We are building new ICUs and HOBs here, additional staffing is being provided by redeployment but the pool is getting smaller.

Tradesmen should be vaccinated as well. Mr Pea is a plumbing and heating engineer and has to go into private houses every day fixing leaks and broken boilers. It’s bonkers that people in those jobs aren’t a priority for receiving the vaccine.

    Posted 38 minutes ago

NHS engineers going into ICUs, theatres and wards repairing ventilators and other medical devices haven’t received the vaccine yet.

7300miles/ 294000ft according to my veloviewer.
A lot of that has been commuting (344 rides), mileage would have been higher if audax events were running.
Hopefully I’ll get back to doing some long rides next year and aim for SR series.
