Ok, thanks for the tip, Love Tubs!
Just been looking at the Transfil Flying Snake and it sounds good, a bit more deavy duty than the Black Snake ones.
Seems to have reasonable reviews too.
Would this set work with the middleburn oilers or would I not need them?
I think I have gone off the goodridge idea. It seems much easier to find a set with the inner cable included.strangertothelightFree Memberthanks for the info.
Just had a look at the Gore ones, and it seems that they don’t do just the outer cable? If I used the goodridge outer cabling along with those middleburn cable oilers would that work nicely do you think?
I have heard that the goodridge outer cabling is pretty stiff, but to me that is a good thing. The ones I have at the moment are cracking and they have only had about a year’s worth of proper use.
Thanks also for the tip about the good cable cutters, I had heard that it would be a neccessity!
@Dibbs – Don’t suppose you could point me towards somewhere I could find the XTR end caps and rubber boots can you?
Cheers!
strangertothelightFree MemberIf she already has V8s then maybe get some shinpads instead so there is no fear of skinning shins? If that’s what she is worried about?
strangertothelightFree Memberwouldn’t go near plastic pedals with a double-extended, disinfected barge pole…
If you want flat pedals, then most people seem happy with DMR V8s or V12s.
strangertothelightFree MemberNo luck at the LBS. Might just see if a cut down, bent paperclip will work…
strangertothelightFree MemberI have lost one as well. Just about to go and collect my ride from the LBS and will ask them about it when I get there and see if they know where to get some spares from just in case I lose one in the future. If the price is negligable or they give me a load then I will let you know and I can pop one in the post.
Will update you in a bit!strangertothelightFree Memberwhat material is the seat post?
For a couple of frames with jammed seat posts, I have had success with letting a good amount of oil seep in to lubricate it a bit, then get the seat post in a vice, and twist and pull the frame to get it out. It sounds more heavy-handed than it is.
strangertothelightFree MemberThats a bit annoying Woody :-( Looks like you’ll need to get a new chainset and set of wheels then?
Luckily, it seems that most of the bits on my full sus will fit on my mmmbop.
Just got some more headset spacers, so just need that stem and handlebars now and I can work out how much of the steerer tube I need to lop off!strangertothelightFree MemberSounds good! I too was thinking of putting a beefy wheelset on the mmmbop.
I have decided most of the components I am going to have, but don’t have a clue about the weels yet.
So far I have only got the forks, frame (obviously), headset, spacer and bottom bracket.
At the beginning of Feb when the bars and stem come back in stock, I will get them ordered up and things will start to take shape hopefully!strangertothelightFree MemberI’m getting a bit of FOMO about building my ragley :(
Need to wait for some more money and for the parts I want to come back in stock!!
Got any pictures of your build, Woody?strangertothelightFree MemberThanks for the pics StillTortoise! I think Custom graphics is a good way to complete a custom bike – thinking about it, it is a bit strange to have a custom bike with standard/default graphics. Even if you are given the freedom to put the stickers where you want.
I think getting some custom stickers will be something that I will do, but I just don’t know what I would want!
This is the reason I have never got round to getting any tattoos, I just can’t make up my sodding mind!strangertothelightFree MemberNice build ;)
Where did you get your custom graphics done? Looks pretty pforessional to me. My friend is a Salsa team rider, and she has her own custom graphics, including her name all designed by Salsa and it looks great and was hoping to be able to acheive something similar to that.
strangertothelightFree MemberI did think about designing something of my own to put on the frame, but I couldn’t think of what I want, and couldn’t think of where I would get the stickers printed etc. I wouldn’t want it to end up looking sh*tty because of naff stickers.
I know what you mean though, Skyline. I was thinking of cutting up the stickers and rearranging the letters to something different, but haven’t got round to thinking about it properly yet. Might be a crap idea.strangertothelightFree Memberwell as annoying as it is to hear that a component I have just bought and fitted isn’t that popular, I just hope I am one of the lucky ones. If not then I will probably just bite the bullet and Chris King it.
When you say tighten, I assume you mean the headset cap, which will push down and keep it all together? Or do you mean that shim bit that wedges the forks in place?strangertothelightFree MemberThanks Benji. I really hope you were just unlucky though and mine will be fine… :-s
Ah well, time will tell!
Next job is to get the crown race on… What a git.I need to post a couple of photos once things have come along a bit more.
strangertothelightFree MemberThanks Bennyboy, thats certainly something I will bear in mind. It’s jobs like those that I always find to be the worst jobs when it comes to bikes. But I think adjusting stubborn derailleurs has to be the most annoying job to do. I think mainly because I am crap at it…
strangertothelightFree MemberThanks for all the opinions.
For the difference in price, I decided it would probably be worth having the larger rotors.
It was Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative where I found the front one with 203mm rotor for £75, and CRC for the Rear with 203mm rotor for £69.91 or something.
I guess it would be a bit of an impulse buy because it seems like a bit of a good bargain, but I am sick of my Hayes nines, haven’t got on with them the whole time I have had them.. :-/strangertothelightFree MemberThanks for the info Hanky.
Re: the Big pig – I am not going to ditch it, it took me a couple of hours to get the B*STARD cups in! Also, I don’t want a reducer headset because I have 1.5″ steerer on my forks. This narrowed my choice of headsets down to pretty much either one of these or a Chris King, and I don’t have ~£100 to spend on a headset at the moment. I know they are good, but it is far too much for me to spend on a headset when there are cheaper ones. Thanks for the heads-up on these though. I will have to keep a close eye on it and give it some TLC and plenty of grease :D
strangertothelightFree MemberI believe Ragley are replacing the mmmbop with two new models (due in stock in feb I think (?)), but that’s all I know about it.
strangertothelightFree MemberI searched everywhere, but mmmbops are now discontinued, and I think I got the last green frame left in the UK!
Rutland Cycling has one 16″ blue mmmbop left, but apart from that, I think there was one other blue frame that I came across, cant remember where.strangertothelightFree MemberOk, thanks! Hmmm… I need to have a good think about this now! :P
strangertothelightFree Memberthanks for the input Northwind.
I did have a thought about the Saint chainset, but couldn’t decide if it was really suitable and if it was overkill or not. It seems that the saint range is aimed primarily at DH usage?
Its tricky to narrow down the choice as there are so many good components to choose from…strangertothelightFree MemberThere is a sticker which has 3 lines, each one taller than the last. there are arrows pointing towards the middle line..?
strangertothelightFree MemberOh I see. I’m not too good on all the technical stuff!
it was from a Kona Dawg Primo (2007).
RE: the seal change – I think it is a good idea whether I decide to sell or not. Thanks for the tip!
I am thinking that it may be worth more to me for a future build (or as a spare!) than I will get if I sold it.
I was considering sending it off to TF and getting it serviced and tuned if I were to hang onto it, but wasn’t sure if it was worth it.
The tuning and servicing of shocks is another thing I wanted to ask you forumers about!strangertothelightFree MemberI don’t think it is unreasonable, but it all depends on their attitude to their customers I guess. See if you can have a word with the manager. Supposing they do loan you a bike, I think they would want a hefty deposit if you want to borrow anything half decent…
strangertothelightFree Memberhmmm ok. Not sure on rebound. Its i2i is ~200mm and compression looks to be 50mm. It came off my full sus, which it came with. The bike it came off is a 2007 model, but it hasn’t had more than about a years worth of light use.
Thanks for your input ;)strangertothelightFree MemberI wasn’t too sure about the different greens either, but looking at them, there are some lighter green patches in the design that are pretty close to the green of the mmmbop (well, from what I can tell from looking on the internet, anyway. I may have a poorly calibrated monitor for all I know!).
I have chromag QR clamp on my FS and didn’t have to think twice about which QR to get for this build.Which saint RD do you use? Are the two versions GS and SS? I can’t remember now.
strangertothelightFree MemberOk thanks for the input. I realised after posting how mental my colours were!
I have to say, when it comes to colours and matching them, I am not in touch with my feminine side…
I have decided that the following may be better…
Gold qr clamp,
gold stem,
green chromag fubars OS
white ODI troy lee grips.I think that will probably be a bit more respectable!
The colour scheme of it has actually been my biggest dilemma!
I want it to stand out and don’t want it to be plain, and having seen a lot of other ragley builds, I wanted to do something different, which I think is the reason for my previously mental colour ideas…Ok, so maybe my idea of single speed might be a bad one. In which case, can anyone recommend a chainset (in terms of value for money, aesthetics, and how it will fit in with the rest of the build)?
I decided that if I end up going for gears, I was going to get the shimano saint shadow m810(?) rear deraileur, but I wasn’t really sure what the differenced between the two versions were. I gather that it will probably depend on the chainset I have?
Thanks for all your help everyone!
