    Inspirational!
Like I said, don’t think my break has healed and it was operated on 15 months ago. Think I might push for the op when I have the X-ray on Wednesday.
Thanks for all the replies! 🙂

OCB – glad to hear your mum gets out so much, I’ll bear in mind the comments about side articulation but hopefully that shouldn’t be a problem.

    That sounds pretty good!
I was curious how the insert coped with the stress of banging downhill – not sure how strong the fitment would be, but if you’re doing uplift days that suggests it’s pretty strong.
Not too bothered with the scar – not had much interest in the one I already have!
    Thanks for the feedback!
jammiedodger – look forward to hearing your exploits!

    Cheers for that wwaswas
Glad to hear yours is fixed.
Snapped my neck of femur 15 months ago and it doesn’t want to heal.
Back for an x-ray this week and in expectation that it’s not fixed I’m thinking of pushing for a hip replacement – hence the question. 🙂

Thanks guys. Parkedtiger – Wythburn Church sounds interesting – looks steep too.
How does it compare with something like, say, Snowdon Ranger?

It makes interesting reading, hearing what members of the forum think should go into the magazine. I like the righteous indignation of the posters who criticise magazine staff for apparently taking no notice of them. The sad truth is that only a small proportion of forum users buy the magazine. To quote Mark: “We get 700,000 users per month right here! If just 5% of those decided to subscribe I’d be browsing through the catalog of caribbean islands* on which to build my palace “. You can’t determine content on the basis of people who “would buy the magazine if…”
Perhaps STW needs to do some proper market research of it’s existing customer base in order to determine it’s future?

Tour of Coniston is a classic.
Start at the southern end of the lake, head out west over Woodland Fell, head towards Torver then SW into Broughton Moor and up to Stevenson Ground.
From here climb north onto Walna Scar Road, down to Coniston via Spoon Hall.
Cake and coffe then round the top end of Coniston Water and up into Grisedale Forest, along to Low Parkamoor and then down the track to High Nibthwaite and back to the car.
    Top ride.

Easy enough to link Marin and Penmachno together for a good day’s riding. Got a GPX somewhere if you want it?

I commute 10 undulating miles on a Pompino.
Started out 49:16 but Found that a little hard and as the cogs wore out I replaced them with 48:18 which is great.
Only times I don’t enjoy it is riding up the inclines into a headwind!
The Pompino is a great bike at a great price

ScottCheg – that’s a great little track. The steep bit is Harcles Hill.
Bull Hill is the one after Pilgrim’s Cross.
    I’ve never ridden Harcles – don’t think I ever will! 😀
The descent from Bull Hill past Ellen Strange’s grave is fun – especially on your own at night!

It does also depend on the sealant your using, quantity in the tyre etc.
If you’re using Bontrager Juice then you have little chance of any puncture being sealed. Joe’s and Stan’s seem to work fine though. As GL said, if you know where the puncture is, rotate it to the bottom and it should seal.
The only punctures that it doesn’t seem to fix are when the rim cuts into the tyre – the tubeless equivalent of a pinch puncture. These usually spell the end of the tyre. 🙂

I use an Oregon. Fits neatly on the bars, uses AA batteries which (lithium non-rechargeable)last 12 hours or so. Good for walking too. I think the memory map one has an integral battery which can be an issue oin a long day out.
I used it for the C2C last year and it was excellent, so much easier than a paper map.

    Not many at that price!
This isn’t far off, but most are a fat wedge of cash more expensive:

Took mine to the bike shop where I got it from, they can get seal kits and other spares apparently.
Where did you get yours from?

Beautiful up here in the North West Pennines.
Just back from a sunny jaunt up to the wind turbines, a loop of Cragg Quarry and back home.
Plus, the lad from next door came with us and there was no need to call out the air ambulance this time, so all round things are pretty good! 🙂

There is a car park up at the top by the hall. You need to go in at the rugby club entrance and over the motorway. Easiest way is to come off the M60 at Prestwich heading north towards Bury. Left at Cooksons cycles, straight ahead at the lights, straight on at the little roundabout then past the rugby club on the left and into the park.
There is a marked trail round the park – I think your nephew will enjoy it! 🙂

I had one winter out of trad Mavic Open Pros.
Replaced with ceramic. These lasted four years – replaced them when they completely stopped braking in the wet.
So definitely better value. Plus the cost comparison should include the wheelbuild cost, so it’s more like £60 to £100.

    Yes it is.
I take it you’re tinking of Kings Highway then round the back of the Ski slope?
After you drop into Rossendale you can head straight up the road to Townsend Fold and you keep going past the clay pigeon quarry and out onto the top of Gin Croft Lane at Cowpe Lowe. From there follow Rooley Moor road until you can join the Cragg Quarry track and put in a loop of that. If you then carry on down Rooley Moor towards Rochdale you will hit the trail to Lee which isn’t open yet, but I’m sure will be when you come to ride it.
From Lee I wouldn’t o back to the MTL, I would head up to Sharneyford on the back track, then Overto Thieveley Pike and Deerplay Moor, joining the MTL there. A short stretch of that will take you onto the bridleway down to Clowbridge and back from there as you describe.
Looks a top route and will be a big day out!

You’re on the wrong route – you should have done the C2C!

    What’s left?

Bit of pushing on Garburn, up Sadgill and on the boggy section through Mosedale.

Bit more up towards Tan Hill and that’s about it, although the road section from Richmond to Osmotherley isn’t much fun.

I don’t think there’s any route across the Lakes that doesn’t involve pushing…..

Might be worth considering a Garmin Oregon.

I bought one earlier this year and used it to guide me along the MTB C2C.
It comes with a complete set of the UK OS 1:50,000 maps, which are pretty good for off-road cycling.
I drew the route as a track on MM, one track for each day, and transferred them across. Each day I opened the appropriate route, zoomed into the map and followed the track.
It uses AA batteries and the Lithium ones lasted a day and a half (around 18 hours) in the energy saving mode.
Had absolutely no problems with it, you can zoom in and out to see as much as you want and it is so much easier than carrying a map.
It aligns the screen to the direction you're facing, shows you as an arrow near the bottom of the screen, shows the OS map and your route drawn on top.
I think it's a fantastic piece of kit and it must have saved at least an hour a day pulling out the map, confirming where I was and then working out where I should go.
If you want an electronic map, then this is ideal.

Well, I live in North Bury, been here over 20 years and love it.
Edge of the countryside so great riding from the door plus it's only a ten mile commute which is pretty reasonable. And there's an off-road option of 15 miles if you want to ride on fat tyres.
The local riding is excellent and there's plenty of it, but if you do want a change then Lakes, Dales, Peaks and North Wales are an easy drive away.
Best thing is riding from the back door – it's all my garden! 🙂
