Greg Minnaar: Retirement 20 Questions with the GOAT

There are 125 different users on this section of trail on strava plus a few that probably are not so I’d say it’s safe to assume she is well aware of mountain bikers, and we’re not talking little snappy dogs they could do some serious harm and you can’t tell me a 10 stone woman is going to be able to control 2 Alsations! I am pretty sure others must of had similar experiences with this woman and dogs, it only takes one occurrence for something to happen and aggression from dogs towards people should never be ignored even if it’s just getting them muzzled.
stomlinsonFree MemberThree fish I did get off my bike straight away but they didn’t stop and as she had three dog she could only hold two while the third was circling and barking while I pushed up I was extremely tempted to give it the boot! How does a woman expect to control three dogs on her own? I basically just want to know how much shit is get in for riding where I shouldn’t.
stomlinsonFree MemberThe main problem was the woman’s attitude which was basically you shouldn’t be up here so my dogs can be as aggressive as they want as your the one in the wrong! I am a dog lover too I have two Staffordshire bulls but I can only imagine what would be said if mine were out of control like that! There really is another route up in the winter either.
stomlinsonFree Member@jim25 I’m thinkin of buyin the Sb6c I tried the Nomad but wasn’t keen preferred the Bronson as it was a bit more lively really like the look of the Yeti’s geometry might have to have a test ride I know there’s one down at Degla hoping it will be bit more lively to ride than the Nomad.
stomlinsonFree MemberI have had a Five now for nearly three years and it’s time for a new bike Five has been great but fancy a change, never going back to a Specialized the 2010 Enduro I had fell to pieces, demo’d a 5010 a Bronson and a Nomad 650b the Bronson being my choice the Nomad no doubt would be amazing at uplifts but just felt a bit dull. So I have 2 bikes I fancy a Yeti SB6c or the new Ibis Mojo Hd3.
stomlinsonFree MemberYep I’d go Canyon Spectral but the EX AL 7.0 and save 700 quid and there’s nothing on it that would let you down.
stomlinsonFree Member@tomhoward I would say if someone spends 1800 quid on wheels but they can’t make them go round they’ve probably wasted their money! But hey ho each to their own, you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy riding and go fast, got to respect the boys on their ten year old bikes goin like the bloody clappers! To me it’s not a point of affordability it’s justification I couldn’t justify that kind of money on rims especially when I know people that ride them and that have tried them and say they just ain’t worth the money. Reckon I could justify a set of the Superstar ones though. 😈
stomlinsonFree MemberWe went degla today you see all sorts the best I saw though was a fully decked out Nomad 650b with Enve wheels being pushed up the climb 😆
stomlinsonFree MemberBlahblahblah how tall are you? Let us know what you think of sizing, cheers
stomlinsonFree MemberAnybody received their Capra yet? Tempted to get one but constantly deliberating the sizing just seems small at 5’10 I am thinking the large would be best especially when you compare the numbers to the new Alpine bikes intended for a similar purpose. Anybody around the Peak District have one maybe I could have a butchers at? Cheers
stomlinsonFree MemberHow about the Troy Lee Kg’s they are pretty big I have 17″ calves and found them too big had to change for a medium my riding pal has massive legs and is going from a medium to a large also depends on how much protection you need, worth a look into though
stomlinsonFree MemberSorry have to disagree I think the track looks nowhere near hard enough for the best riders in the world, dh tracks should be steep and technical first the SA track then this! I know it’s hard to tell on a helmet cam but I can’t believe this track is technically demanding enough not sure if the UCI are choosing the tracks people want to see and the riders want to ride, poor show! Wouldn’t be so bad if there were more races in the calendar.
stomlinsonFree MemberOne happy hippy any chance of telling us the weight of your wheel build? Tubeless or tubes too? Good grief what pressures were you trying to run? Cheers
stomlinsonFree MemberMaking a bike more fun to ride by making it feel more responsive will also make you want to put in more effort if you feel the effort is being rewarded increasing work and reducing body weight, happy days I say!
stomlinsonFree MemberWhite is so 2008 Pike all the way! I have white 32’s on my Five gives my cousin free opportunity to take the piss!
stomlinsonFree MemberCan you not bang a YT on a 0% credit card? Middle spec one looks good for the money and travel is reduced a bit, I have a Five and absolutely love it it’s been a great bike had it 2 years now and ridden everything on it I have been thinking about a Bronson but it would have to seriously impress to trade the Five in. The Five has been trail bike of the year god knows how many times and in Dirt 100 every time but once the Heckler hasn’t think that says it all! Also I am about same height as you and run 17″ with 50mm stem.
stomlinsonFree MemberI worked at Bentley for a while there cars are really nice but massively overpriced people just pay for a status symbol, don’t get me wrong I would love to own such cars but would never chose that lifestyle over riding bikes with my buddies it is better to do shit than have shit!
stomlinsonFree MemberA mate of mine picked a minter up last year for 1700 quid yours sounds like a better spec and it’s got a reverb I would be trying for 2 grand
stomlinsonFree MemberDidn’t realise there were any other flats worth mentioning got 2 sets of the mk4 pedal loads of grip thinner than the previous pedals and they look mint! Also if you return to Burgtec I think they will service them for you. I think once you try em that’s it although the pins are bloody evil! Worth it though 😀
stomlinsonFree MemberReally nice looking bike but if it’s 170 travel that’s more than I need for xc duties. YT going from strength to strength how long before we see a carbon Tues? Would be interested in similar bike with 140/150 travel and as for BOS I am blown away by my Idylle Rare air and Stoy shock probably doesn’t make me much faster but feel more comfortable and hand/arm fatigue whilst riding dh all day is reduced in comparison to the number of Fox 40’s I have run before. Do people think that Dirt may be influenced by the amount of advertising YT take out in their mag as surely they wouldn’t struggle to fill these pages.
stomlinsonFree MemberI have 2012 Five and love it and to be honest getting sick of hearing about 650b the benifits seem tiny and for years the bike industry has been telling consumers the wheels are the best place to save weight on a bike for fast acceleration and a fun ride, seems they have just found another way to make your current bike out of date just like with tapered head tubes for instance now some forks are not even available with a tapered tube and I can remember reading that the benifits to that we’re small too but they have to keep flogging you bikes. Basically make it hard to find parts people will buy new bikes!
stomlinsonFree MemberNot owned one but ridden one a few times really nice bike and if your going to take it to some dh tracks then no it’s not too much bike, get it bought! 😀 Just check the geometry think they come up a bit small like Santa Cruz
stomlinsonFree MemberHave you tried the ccdb lounge you can swap settings with other owners on there and think sometimes they have techs from Cane Creek on hand for advice
stomlinsonFree Member1978 not too sure about performance on the Domain to be honest thought they had Boxxer, Morewood izimu look a good bike 15% off at Bike Active plus another 10% off in Jan or I would wait and get new Yt tues they look an amazing bike for the money.
stomlinsonFree Membermedium Nukeproof Scalp in stock at Velotive 20% discount 1750 free delivery
stomlinsonFree MemberJam bo not really cut down had them a while now so spikes are pretty short just can’t seem to get a handle on the way they wash out or drag you up roots they are great where mud is pretty thick was thinking maybe some Muddy Mary’s or some Mud Kings.
stomlinsonFree MemberYou just need a faster gnarlier dog, like mine! They say dogs are like their owners 😆
stomlinsonFree MemberI wouldn’t of said dh riding is no longer in vogue venues are starting up all over the place and they are packed out, I think the 322 was just too expensive compared to the competition 5k can get you some carbon loveliness. For myself I can justify spending a few quid on an xc bike because I ride it a lot but as with a lot of people my dh bike probably gets used a few times a month at most and with companies like yt offering good bikes at a good price, but it’s not just direct sales you can bag a Morewood Makulu with full Boss for a little over 3k it’s no wonder they don’t sell.
stomlinsonFree MemberApparently knowing how every tyre combination feels for every trail condition and every season makes you a mountain biker! Degla gets a dogging on here but I reckon its good fun hitting those jumps every now and again I suppose if you can’t jump its a bit crap, as for hard men riding Walna Scar go check out Ben A’an that’s where real men ride I tried couldn’t manage it all respect to anyone who can!
stomlinsonFree MemberWhen you come across some tech fest and get so excited you make chimp noises! 😆
stomlinsonFree MemberPJM1974 how do you find the Ardent in wet shitty conditions I mostly ride natural terrain with a lot of rock and roots and how do they blow up in comparison? Looking for something that’s going to grip well, not clog and not drag, tall order I know. I did used to run HR front and rear but can’t really recall them being too draggy. Once made the mistake of buying a 2.1 HR blew it up didn’t even bother trying it.
stomlinsonFree MemberWent the other week had a great day out it will be even better when they get that fourth track open and the freeride track runs right to the bottom, far better than Antur Stiniog in my opinion which just seems like an uplifted Llandegla with big rocks concreted in.
stomlinsonFree MemberI am happy with mine too the only thing that niggles me about it is that I find it hard to scratch my head through the vents.
stomlinsonFree MemberSame as edward2000 got them on my dh bike never been a big fan of Formula but these are unreal, Hope tech M4’s on my xc bike are less powerful but have better modulation, think the Formula may be a bit much for xc use.
stomlinsonFree MemberPeople doggin single pivot make me laugh! Joe Barnes used to ride a single pivot pretty quick so there is obviously nothing wrong with the design, I also come across many riders while I am riding my dated single pivot design but can’t remember being beaten to the bottom, it’s about buying a bike that’s fits you properly and you feel comfortable with, it’s all about the pilot not the plane.
stomlinsonFree MemberSeen on their Facebook page it was best in test in Mbr magazine check out the review, a mate of mine bought his lad one of their jump bikes says quality of the product is amazing and is now anchoring after a Wicked. J tech can service Bos suspension for you or sort any problems I have another friend who has been running a Deville now for 2 years without any issues. The only bad thing I have heard about Yt is when they are out of spares like mech hangers for example there can be a waiting time, hope this helps
stomlinsonFree MemberGiant reign good value for money and bang on your 2k budget wait a few months and see if you can grab a bargain
stomlinsonFree MemberGotta say the new 2014 Scott Genius Lt looks a lot better than this
stomlinsonFree MemberSame happened to mine guys at Hope were great replaced it no fuss worth a phone call
