twang is right. I have see the descent from Top Riley – just west of Eyam – to Stoney Middleton referred to as Jacob’s Ladder, albeit not on my OS map

…although I must say I used to wear Ron Hills all those years ago on my first Spesh Hardrock…with fluorescant bar ends too!

…and I bet it’s good how those Ron Hill leg loops stop your trousers riding up, eh

I would no more have bar ends on my riser bars than I would wear baggie shorts when road riding. Having seen this topic many times now it is clear that I value fashion over function. Shame it doesn’t extend to my “everyday” dress.

Cheers Jam bo. Ordered some EVO pads. You’re right, at that price it would be silly not to. I just hope the sizing is the same as the Kyle Straits.

Now, anyone seen any bargain price Evo shin pads??

jam bo, where did you get the POC stuff from?

Sadly – judging by many posts on STW and beyond – the core market who can’t afford/won’t afford this kind of top-end gear will rarely benefit from the great service you have had. I suspect the margin on the DB allows for the pre and after sales service. Anyway, must stop, it’s Friday and I don’t want to go (any more) into cynical mode. Glad you’re getting top-notch service.

Spot on nickegg. I suspect the number of DBs sold compared to say a Fox RP23 means Cane Creek have to ensure all the customers are happy. I suspect – but happy to be proved wrong – that you wouldn’t get that level of service discussing a £25 Cane Creek headset with them.

A big consideration is that what most of us actually see or hear in the media is barely half the picture. I feel deeply sorry for Ron Jeremy and I hope never to be in his or his family’s position and, Ron, I also apologise for picking up on your story. However – playing a game of devil’s advocate – I can think of mitigating circumstances to the defendant’s story. Perhaps she had received some bad news and had to get to somewhere quickly and driving – over the limit and against her better judgement – was the only option. Please don’t reply with the facts of the case; I am merely hypothesising.

Back – more or less – to the original post, accidents caused by drink driving are a serious crime but are still often accidents and are not up there with the pre-meditated and intentional hurt and suffering that can be caused by the murders, assaults, rapes etc that we all hear far too much of. Some may argue that getting into a car when knowingly over-the-limit is pre-meditated, but any accident that may result most certainly won’t be. I suspect there are many otherwise “decent” citizens locked up for causing a serious road accident by drink driving. I would also guess that their custodial sentence benefits no one other than the victims wanting retribution and I don’t believe that is what the justice system is here to serve. Guilt and remorse can be the worst punishment of all.

To put this in some personal perspective a friend of mine was brutally assaulted by a drunk and jealous boyfriend. She is now OK but it was a pretty horrible time for her, her family and her friends. Whilst the alcohol may have been the catalyst, the act for which he was tried was NOT accidental so this – in my opinion – is a much more serious crime.

Baronspudulike, I’ve only ever ridden at Llandegla once, but it’s the only trail centre where I’ve seen someone fall off the board-walk into the swamp. Poor tyre choice I reckon

on the tarmac this weekend. Wife, 2 kids and in-laws coming back from Spain. Not enough space in the car to pick them up from airport so dropping off the car and riding back. I know 50 miles is nothing for roadies, but it should be fun…

I did a great ride on High Street a couple of years ago, but I don’t recognise the singletrack on the hillside in your 3rd photo. Where is it?

She is sunning herself in Spain at her folks place. I need to lower her expectations about how much is going to be done by the time she gets back. Why she should be chilling in the hot tub with a G n T whilst I work all day and then DIY all night I just don’t know.

    You’re right. MTFU

Oooh, is this turning into another tyre thread?? I had Halo Choir Masters when I rode in the Sierra Nevada. Light enough to go up the hills, cheap enough to trash, sticky enough to…er…stick. In a week of hard riding (OK, I’m not a downhiller but I don’t hang around) the tyres survived and I only got one pinch flat on the last descent of the last day…on Mavic 717 rims too!

Or I suppose I could use the time I waste on this forum (when I should be working) to get out and ride :D

ha ha. Must try that. At the moment I’m “trying” to get up at the crack o’ sparrows to get a cheeky pre-work ride in.

Why oh why did I read this. Memories now flooding back of a great trip with Ride Sierra Nevada last year and the 4 weeks until I go back just cannot go quick enough. Now, must shake myself out of this daydream and do some work… 8O

Yeah I like the look of the Aldi one. I keep thinking having a NAS is a step better, but I guess the reality is that I wouldn’t use the ftp access very much if at all and if I really need to access it via my laptop – with the PC off – I could just plug a normal hard drive direct into the laptop.

That’s what bothers me. Really it’s for storing “home” data – movies, music etc – but also backing up work data from my laptop. Truth is my home PC is always on when I’m working from home on my laptop so should I just install the drive on the home PC and share it? Is FTP access anything you use on your NAS?

Update – plugged in my Sennheiser in-ear ‘phones that I bought for my (broken) iPod and this little player sounds remarkably good. Well worth £10

I took the old cheap and heavy suspension forks off my hardtail and replaced with fully rigid carbon numbers. I now have a much lighter HT that is great for exactly what you describe, and has given me loads of fun learning to ride the bumpy stuff without simply letting the suspension swallow it all up. I had a fab 45/50km ride the the Dales the other week and the road sections were far from a drag. It climbs like a goat too.

    Go for it I say.

Cheers. Worth a punt then. I’d forgotten – and don’t like – four finger braking!

    stilltortoise

Does the same apply with centre-pull cantis? I have an old Spesh Hard Rock from 20 years ago and the brakes are next-to-useless. I wondered if I could fit V brakes. Unfortunately I can’t just “have-a-go” because the Spesh lives overseas at the in-laws. I don’t want to take v-brakes over if they aren’t going to fit.

I always understood freeride – be it biking, skiing, snowboarding – to be ride whatever you want, wherever you want, on whatever you want and wearing whatever you want. In practice you’re more likely to be laughed at by a freerider over your choice of riding style/colour of bike/baggyness of shorts/brand of bash guard etc etc than any other cyclist. Maybe it’s just my unfair perception, but it is based on experience.

I take as much pleasure “freeriding” in lycra as I do overtaking people on the ups in baggy shorts, knee pads and full facer.

yet in the recent MBUK “how to” they appear as different “skillz”, albeit with the same explanation as far as I can tell. Granted I don’t lose sleep over this, but I’ve never quite got to the bottom of it. I may reinvent them as stendoes…

sootyandjim. Nice try, but your “assistance” was misleading. Under the definition of endo:

“In BMX riding, “endo” used to be a synonym for front wheelie.”

Then under the definition of front wheelie:

Also called a “nose wheelie” or “stoppie.”

Then under the definition of stoppie:

    see front wheelie

Maybe the fact that as a kid I rode a BMX means they are one and the same. However as an MTBer I shall accept that stoppie means rolling endo. What do they mean on my road bike??

Are you sure it was Stanage? Sounds just like Crack and Corner at the Roaches upper tier. You can avoid that move tho’ for a stunning “out there” final pitch.

I disagree about sub-severe routes being messy. In my experience they often follow the most obvious line of weakness up a crag, which on grit is often a crack (or corner!)
