Religion is a way of quantifying the unquantifiable. I sometimes think that religion offers a more plausible explanation of “the Universe” than some of the “scientific” ideas that gets hypothesized.

I’m not religious and my education is in the sciences, but for the people who need or want a framework around their existence and reason-for-being then I’m all for it.

I switched to Firefox from IE but now find it very slow to start up. Chrome is quicker to start

Better check pretty bloomin’ quickly then. Enough time still to order a new axle. Thanks

At least I will be able to see a broken axle pretty clearly. I hope it isn’t – off to Spain next week :o

Agree with Birdsong and Touching the Void, but the one that – most recently – moved me was The Shack. I’m not religious so don’t be put off by the religious angle of this, it is a really uplifting read. Granted I have become much more of a wuss since having kids (if you read it you’ll understand) but for all faiths – even those with “none” – I can recommend it.

Life Of Pi was another goodie

I’ve been riding 661 Kyle Straits for 18 months or so following a crash which shredded my knee. Fortunately it was cosmetic damage but I wear knee pads for most of my MTBing now. I’ve since moved to the EVO pads purely because I got a pair at the same price as the Straits. The biggest benefit after peace-of-mind is that they keep my knees warm. My knees start to ache in cold wet weather and these really help.

I’ve had a number of “offs” with the Straits and if the EVOs are half as good then they’ll get my thumbs up. They are relatively discrete, comfy enough for long days in the saddle and acceptable in hot weather (I wore knees pads in Spain last summer without any overheating issues).

Early impressions of the new EVOs are that they are a bit warmer around the back of the knee and a bit snugger for the same size. If you can’t get the EVOs for the same price as the Straits then I don’t think there’s much to recommend the extra outlay.

I’ve got a Whyte which is virtually the same design as the Quad Link Marin full sussers. I find it rests quite nicely on the top of my rucsac

And thanks to sc-xc for pointing out that my post is a carbon copy of 2unfit2ride’s last week. Unintentional, but at least I see where the other Love Actually fans are hiding!

most babies look the same, boy or girl, IMHO. At least when dressed in “appropriate” colours I have a fighting chance of referring to them in the correct sex

ampthill, I can strongly recommend getting some rigid forks. Top end rigid forks and still cheaper than low end suspension. My forks were 80mm Manitou Axel Elites and the bike is better without them. I’ve now got White Brothers Rock Solid carbon forks. Ace!

Is NO ONE going to come to my rescue? Not even the 4 Weddings lovers who are genetically programmed to like Richard Curtis’ stuff…even just a little bit. Go on, I dare you to come clean :D

Anyway, come on everyone, get back to the OP, rather than this “have-a-bash-at-stilltortoise”. Otherwise I may have to start a thread on music that you shouldn’t admit to liking

We weren’t going to find out with the first one, but I saw something on the scan that didn’t look like an umbilical if you know what I mean. We decided then to find out for sure. Find out for the second one too. 2 boys later my wife wants a girl. I want to get out riding again

Those who have admitted to liking 4 Weddings are only a Bill Nighy away from liking Love Actually. Less tragedy, more comedy farce, what’s not to like?

So I guess I should keep it quiet that I like Dirty Dancing too?

I find that couples admit to liking Love Actually but all single people I know hate it. It is guaranteed to get my missus in the mood :D

Perhaps I should rename this thread “things you should never admit to on an internet forum”.

My missus had someone hijack her Ebay account who tried to sell software. What was amazing was the hoops she had to jump through to change her name when we married. It was a nightmare, yet someone managed to hack in. I don’t get it, but shows that the criminals are one step ahead of the “goodies”.

    Cornering for me too

wish that my cornering was a good left as it is right. I know most people have a preference, but mine seems really marked. going left i can get right down, drift switchbacks etc etc, but going left i feels so awkward and wooden

I have the same when skiing. Carving to the left is a doddle and feels totally natural, whereas rightwards feels more of a conscious effort

Just cheekily steering my original post to best live band, rather than most surprising, it has got to be Muse. I know it’s hardly original to say that, but they are truly awesome. But then Nick Harper performing Jeff Buckley’s Grace on just an acoustic guitar is something to behold too

Frankly with drivers like my wife around I’d be parking on my drive all the time

…and just to finish getting it off my chest before I have to take a chill pill, my father in law – a former professional driver and ex-rally driver with an impeccable driving record – has had a near miss much like my wifes “didn’t miss” in the exact same spot, as have I. None of us would say we were bad drivers, but sometimes there are blind spots.

OK, forget it, I’m getting too wound up. It’s a sunny day and I’m stuck inside with small children. Off for a cup of tea…

Oh and before someone suggests that all accidents are a result of human error, I’d strongly argue that someone knowingly driving dangerously whilst knowingly drunk is far from human error.

A good driver wouldn’t reverse if they couldn’t see where they were going.
    Wing mirrors?
    Get out and check?
    Open door and look backwards?
    Have someone watch/help you?

Er, that’s the irony I was trying to point out. My wife – a good driver – wouldn’t have had the accident if she’d done all the things you self-righteously pointed out. I suspect half the accidents that happen on the road are a result of us humans making human errors. Obviously you have never suffered from this.

I saw her live years ago supporting someone long since forgotten. She was great, but like Terrahawk, the only album I have is “Stories from…” It is great tho’

There’s a lot of talk here about damage to the environment and “someone else” possibly suffering because of us lot riding cheekily. One thing not mentioned much is the land-owners who “discourage” use of their land. I have 2 scars across my upper arms from a piece of bailing twine strung across a BRIDLEWAY. I dread to think how the farmer discourages bikers from the footpaths. I also dread to think what would have happened to me if it had caught me round the neck.

Daft thing is my wife is genuinely a very good driver. The car was full of crap for a car boot sale so the rear view mirror was next to useless. No one was hurt and I’m sure we’ll laugh about it in a few days.

What does annoy me slightly is that this has happened to the neighbour before (not by us might I add). What I want to know is why he doesn’t park on the drive rather than the road. There are LOADS of people on our estate who insist on parking on the road rather than their perfectly good drives. WHY?

Cheers for the offer. Believe me I’m at that stage where I do need to get out riding with someone better than me. I’m quite pleased with my fitness but do want some more “skillz”. I know I need to get out and practice practice practice but with 2 young kiddie-winkies I’m not blessed with free time.

Leek in Staffordshire. There’s not north shore up (down!) here (that I’m aware of) but to be honest until I can ride along a log without falling off I don’t see much point in trying to ride “proper” skinnies like in your vid. I think these tips are really going to work…
