if cost really is no object, have a look at a Scott Genius LTD. 150mm travel, light, looks great and costs £8k 8O
Obviously I have never ridden one or even seen it in the flesh. That said the Genius has had a good review in ST, albeit not the feather weight one.

as above but also a first aid kit, space blanket, whistle, an out-of-date energy bar and some little LED lights – all for emergencies. I am constantly ridiculed for “being prepared” (usually by those who don’t even have a spare tube) but am happy to have not needed any of these things in anger (yet!).

Let them work on their own bikes

For some reason my bikes hold more fascination

(PS I like the closed eyes – I often do that myself when “tweaking” with my bike, half-expecting something to fling off any second!)

I work from home most days and listen through some £25 Logitech satellites with an active subwoofer. My PC is plugged into them but it’s just a 3.5mm jack to plug in an MP3 player. Assuming you will be working rather than on STW  then you’ll probably find the quality of these PC speakers more than acceptable for the low levels you will be listening.

If however you will be sat back in your chair “critical listening” then spend more.

I’m with z1ppy and IHN on this. Did I laugh? Yes. Was it a classic movie experience? No

He’s entitled to express it whether you like it or not. And why bother expressing his opinion about the A&A somewhere else.

Why do so many threads descend into “rights” and “entitlements”? It’s my “entitlement” to ask (politely might I add) that at least one post on STW is “a bit of fun” without having to trawl through a load of PC drivel. Put that on another thread that I can avoid on this nice sunny Friday.

…or is this just a troll that is luring me steadily under the bridge?

No, don’t be nasty to BWD. He’s expressing his onion

Can he express his opinion on another thread please?

If the majority of the people who did not vote had voted I am sure the outcome would have been different…

Sadly I don’t believe this would be the case. It may have meant more votes for the fringe parties such as the greens, but they will still be a long way off the BNP votes (at least around my way they were).

yes, but would they tell you??

I saw him. I was right next to him at the top of the run in. He was four, but was not Peaty Jnr. He was a great warm up for the crowd. I feel sorry for the 7 year old who was also having a play but could not compete so left the 4x track a broken child

When you turn on the laptop does it pop up with a little balloon in the bottom right hand corner saying “wireless network detected” or something like? If so then it means your laptop has “found” the home hub (or your neighbour’s home hub!). By clicking on this notification you will see the wireless networks that are in range. Hopefully one will be your home hub – the SSID is the name given to your home hub so wireless devices like the laptop can “see” and identify it. You then need to click on it to connect to it but it may ask for a password. This should have been provided with your home hub.

It is unlikely that a new laptop wouldn’t have wireless capability so let’s not worry about that just yet.

TJ, if it were that simple would we really need to have so many cases go to court. You sped, we caught you, here’s your punishment. Why do we need a judge for that? Because life isn’t black and white.

In G’s example I’d rather see a hefty fine and a small ban – at his mate’s expense – than another person on the dole claiming benefits at MY expense. He doesn’t sound like a dangerous driver. He speeds – as do many of us – and he got caught once too often. Bad luck. Fine him yes, ban him yes, but not at the expense of his livelihood. Unless there are other factors not mentioned by G I think his mate has cause for appeal against the punishment (NOT the conviction).

I’ve not read all the posts on this thread but even for STW most are a *touch* unsympathetic to say the least.

the one that set me off down the “right tool for the job” path was definitely a pedal spanner. Struggled for ages trying to change some pedals without, took a quick drive to the LBS, got a pedal spanner and “saw the light” when the pedal came off in seconds.

G, as my friends and family will tell you, I am a big believer in “if you can’t do the crime etc”, particularly when it comes to motoring offences, since many people seem to think they are not “real” laws. How many people describe themselves as “law-abiding citizens” then do 80mph down the motorway? I know I do.

However, you do have my support on this one and I think some sort of appeal would certailny be a good idea. We don’t need any more people out of work.

Did you see the 4 year old on the 4X track? Got bigger cheers than some of the pros!

There was a 4 year old going down the 4X track at Fort Bill at the weekend. He has his Dad wrapped round his finger. When he got to a bit too steep to pedal back up, he dumped his bike and shouted dad to come and get it and carry it to the top of the run in. Then he dropped into the big berm, over the rollers and got the biggest cheer of the weekend :D

the whole point of Twitter is a blog that limits you to how much you can write. End of…

If you’ve never been into blogs in the past (like me) Twitter won’t persuade you. However as many celebs and companies are realising it is a great broadcast medium

No. English as fish and chips.
Seriously though, I had heard/read many times that the atmosphere at FW was better than any other race. Maybe I expected a little too much

They just talk to/about themselves, yes?

Yep, but then that’s the point of a blog, and if you have an interest in that person then it does make sense. I think it does work if you want to follow a celeb/sports person etc. Peaty is pretty good at updating his twitter; he’d posted that his training run at the weekend didn’t go too well for instance. I’ve heard that Russell Brand’s “tweets” are hilarious too

    stilltortoise

Meanwhile, back in the real world, you can always resort to talking to real people face to face. You may even end up riding bikes with them.

I’ve always argued that about Twitter/Facebook/Myspace et al, yet it is my wife who uses Facebook who is in contact with old friends regularly. Two small boys means tradtional face-to-face socialising is a luxury. I “get” facebook for Joe Public, but I don’t get Twitter

    stilltortoise

oh yes. I do use it to “follow” Steve Peat but this comment hits the nail on the head:

“Twitter is a broadcast medium rather than an intimate conversation with friends,” he said.

When my work got onto Twitter I thought I should have a look, but who on earth would be interested in the minutiae of my life??

I can vouch for Mountain Edge. I went on a family holiday in 2007. We stayed at the hotel that Mountain Edge hire their bikes from. Rob was a great guide and the bikes were pretty good too. When we were there there were not a lot of “official” trails for biking, so a guide is a great idea. There’s a bike park up the valley which is easy to ride to.

As for walking, it was ideal for us because we had a 10 month old in tow, but the immediate hills are rolling rather than rugged compared to other alpine resorts I have been to. Definitely feels like an OAP/family resort IMO. Beautiful town tho’
