Tubeless ones with lighter tyres than the ones you’ve got?

Everyone knows the the unwritten reason people come on here asking for buying advice is that they want to buy some new toys. Not sure that tyres and Stan’s gloop will scratch that itch :-)

Is there a highlights edit for that Ruben Alcantara video? 2 minutes passed before I even saw anyone ride a bike! Say what you want about the skills of Danny versus the top BMXers, but Cut Media sure know how to make an entertaining video of him. I gave up on Alcantara after 6 minutes, 5 1/2 of which were tedious black and white “scene setters”.

    ABSOLUTELY. LOVE. THAT!

For me that’s as good as anything he’s done. It’s just so incredibly charming and great fun. It was like watching a Chris Akrigg video done by Hollywood, but with a sense of humour. Superb.

The next big challenge I’d love to see Danny take on is the “one take”. Clearly these tricks are incredibly difficult and take many, many goes to nail. Seeing several tricks done successfully in one go would be incredible. At the risk of being negative, Danny’s tricks *could* get a bit like CGI in the sense they no longer impress and are the minimum expectation. I hope they keep getting cleverer rather than simply bigger.

When I used it there was a setting for “offline mode”. I assume such a thing still exists.

A load of folk in our MTB club get back in after ride and spend first 20 mins of tea and cakes with phones out comparing their stats on various sections, which for me, is detracting from the fun and banter.

Maybe they just have a different idea of what fun and banter is than you :-)

How’s your current levels of fitness ?

    Poor (relatively speaking)

How do you gauge it ?

By judging how far off the climbing pace I am with the local cycling club; currently waaayyyyy off the back. My Strava times are also a good measure but – mostly – I can just “feel” when I’m in bad shape.

    What changes ?

I feel like I’m expending a good effort on my bike, but everyone else is disappearing into the distance! Having that peer-comparison is really handy I think.

The new iOS 10 Apple Music App is better, but still flawed. Apple seem to be geniuses at addressing one lot of user experience problems and introducing a whole load more, but overall it’s an improvement from what came before. I switched to Apple Music from Spotify simply because I have a load of Apple stuff and I liked the fact your local library and “cloud” library are in the same app.

The number one feature for me is the Siri integration. Much better than typing and searching for music.

I’ve taken my boys – similar age – to Stoke City matches. I was worried about it being an unsuitable and intimidating environment and was very pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t. Would happily take them again. As someone says above, there are family enclosures that are full of kids.

I absolutely loved this when I was first introduced to it but, like one of those pop songs that gets into your head on first listen, it does lose its appeal when the novelty wears off. I do hope they extend the functionality a bit. I reckon a soundtrack is a great idea, but what I’d love to see is place names. I did a big road ride in the Summer but, without places names, there’s simply no context of where it started and where it went.

Sorry. I sound like a right party pooper

Legit and downhill I’d have to say Hollinsclough or perhaps Doctor’s Gate. The former I’ve not ridden for a few years so it could now be easier…or harder! The latter I’ve only ever walked down but spent a lot of that walk counting how many times I’d be off the bike if I rode it. It was a lot.

My experience of dealing with them there (Marbesol) was not an especially pleasant one. My recommendation would be to book online and read ALL the terms and conditions. Twice.

I’m sure there are deals to be had with the right provider, but these places can be busy. I suggest you need very fluent Spanish and a lot of patience to get a good deal in person. How gutted would you be if you turned up and no one had any available cars?

    Book online.

OH come on, surely with #Guylove it’s about the journey, not just the ending..

Whilst I’m inclined to agree, all that effort and he could probably have done better with just a sea kayak, although I guess Hope and Five Ten don’t make kayaking equipment ;-)

In my experience a bit of lightish exercise helps. I’ve had a mild cold for a couple of weeks on and off (courtesy of the start of the school term!). Sitting around in a centrally heated house just made me feel worse and getting some fresh air really helped. Yesterday I took the decision to go on a club (road) ride rather than have a lie-in and I felt much better for it. I was slow and off the pace, but it cleared out the snot and made me feel human again.

What I wouldn’t do is anything high intensity tho’

Did anyone else think they could have gone faster in a pedalo?

Entertaining, but that seemed like a lot of effort for only 5mph.

lots of slow commuting on traffic.

Audi because of the auto box. I love driving my manual BMW – love it! – but being stuck in stop-start traffic with a manual box is not fun. If that was the bulk of my driving an auto gearbox would be a key factor in my car-buying decision.

What modern cars have done is taken the limits of grip to much higher speeds. So instead of loosing grip at 40mph, you loose grip at 55mph, at which point people are not skilled enough to catch it and end up crashing.

You can spin this (those puns keep coming) either way:

“What modern cars have done is taken the limits of grip to much higher speeds. The proportion of drivers driving beyond that limit has therefore reduced, hence fewer accidents.”

OEM’s also de-tune an engine to place it’s performance in their range of vehicles, commensurate to it’s pricing structure.

I have a 118d and I gather the only difference* between it and the 120d is the engine tuning.

*well, perhaps not the only difference, but the point is that the same engine performance is possible out of the 118d as the 120d simply by tuning/mapping

It’s interesting to note those who, on threads like this, can’t separate the enjoyment of driving from risk. Those who enjoy driving aren’t all on the limit, recklessly endangering everyone else who gets anywhere near them and aren’t all breaking the speed limit at every opportunity in the pursuit of enjoyment. Enjoyment and safety aren’t mutually exclusive, and the choice of car is a huge driver (pun intended) of the fun side.

On a different note, I drove a Pug 308 GT Line courtesy car that had a synthesised engine noise when you pressed “The Red Button”. My cynicism was replaced with startled joy at how strangely satisfying the completely artificial noise was :-)

    Kids copy their parents, surely?

Yes, they do, but there are a lot more influences than just parents. My eldest boys are really in football and they didn’t get that from me

Serious point being that I’ve noticed behaviours developing in my boys that must have come from friends/classmates at school, because they certainly haven’t come from me and the missus. Parents can’t control everything.

As many have alluded to above, the power is necessary because the weight of cars is increasing. For the driving I mostly do (quiet B roads) I’d rather a small, light, fun car that doesn’t need to trouble speed limits to put a smile on my face, than a huge monster of a car with lots of horses that only comes alive on a track.

Wasn’t it James May who drove the Countach dream of his childhood and concluded that it was a pile of crap for driving.

I saw one of these in the parade lap at Car Fest a couple of years ago. It was the ONLY car to spin on track, at quite mundane speeds.

I’ve bought a few albums over the years that I’ve taken a punt on and not been impressed by, but I always took it on the chin and – in a money-wasting kind of way – it was part of the fun.

^THIS, however, was a huge and genuine disappointment, even after tempering my high expectations.

…your average customer feels relatively time rich and cash poor these days

Interesting assessment. I’d suggest it’s the complete opposite; I struggle to find opportunities to ride my bike never mind fix it. I was riding around on a (road) bike with creaking wheel and headset bearings for waaayyyy too long before finally swallowing my pride and letting the LSB do it. Maybe it’s a bit of laziness too.

I used to love disappearing to the man cave to fettle with my bike and have learnt the skills over the years to be able to build a bike. I used to find it very satisfying but there are so many other things I’d rather be doing – or have to do – instead nowadays. Most are related to being a parent; a joy and a pleasure but also the epitome of a double-edged sword

^I think you’re probably right mmannerr. I suppose it’s the same problem with modern, capable modern MTBs requiring that you go much, much faster to get the same thrill you did on your fully rigid bike all those years ago.

The gravel bike is to a CX bike what a sportive bike is to a race bike.

Now i get it. Thanks Andy

    Am I alone?

No. I read a Cyclist magazine supplement all about gravel bikes, and I was still none the wiser about why they are different from cyclocross bikes. Is it just chunkier tyres? Different geometry? I scan read all that up there ^ and I’m still unsure.

Is it road, cyclocross, gravel, XC in terms of off-road capability then?

Why don’t iPads and phones have a back button?

erm, they do. See screen shot above. It’s the blue chevron bottom left. You can also use one finger to swipe left to right onto the screen and that takes you back to the previous page.

For those suggesting two cars as a solution, why don’t you want to make the most of the driving experience when you need practicality too? Just because I’ve got the bike in the boot doesn’t mean I don’t want to enjoy the drive as much as possible. Every week I drive across the Peak District on quiet B roads and have huge amounts of (legal, safe) fun, but I still have a bike in the boot. I’d be gutted if I had to make a choice between taking my bike or having a fun drive. It is possible to have cake and eat it.

Having done the impractical 2 seater sports car thing, I’m really pleased with the current 1 Series I’ve got. More than big enough for bike carrying duties but great fun to drive. It’s not the fastest car I’ve had in a straight line by any margin, but it’s the closest I’ve got so far to the perfect compromise. Next step will be the kind of estates NZCol is looking at, so will bookmark this…

The type of people who tend to buy RS4’s etc are those who cant afford to buy a weekend toy

It’s not unreasonable to want ONE car that is both practical and fun, is it?!? :?:
