Hang bike from scales, wait until they stop swinging and you'll get the same measurement from where ever you hang it from – it's the magic of physics

and with the magic of simple observation I can tell you that's not the case, so I deduce I have crap scales 🙁

the Park Tools website is pretty good for stuff like this

I used to have an aftermarket one fitted to my old Landrover

    where from??

It should weigh the same regardless of where the bike is attached – as long as none of it is touching the floor.

You'd think so, but I have the same problem with the fishing scales I use. Even hanging it from under the saddle at different points can give different weights. Cheap scales??

Really miss the screen on my old Mondeo. It was brilliant.

to be fair to my missus I still got out regularly with the first one. She had the time, energy and enthusiasm to show him off to friends and family whilst I sneaked in a ride. When the second one arrived I felt obliged wanted to be around more 😀

hora, I'd happily come along and don't mind playing leader, but sadly I have a Christening to go to. Good to see you're trying to make the most of your pre-child free time. I'm constantly regretting not making the most of mine now I'm two kiddies down the line…not that I regret them of course 😯

no probs. Quite tempted to get that way again soon. Not too many places for snow or mud to form either. There's even a "Jacob's Ladder" dropping down from the Woods to Stoney Middleton. Can get very rutted and both me and my mate have come a cropper there in a true "tie-fighter and death star trench" stylee

There's some nice trails around Great Longstone, Calver, Curbar. One of my fave (White) Peak District rides starts in Great Longstone, climbing up onto Longstone Edge, up and over into Eyam then some great woodland trails down into Calver etc etc. If you can afford it, the Vertebrate Graphics White Peak guide book has this route and many more in the area.

There's a particularly loose and rocky descent that drops into Rowland from here that can shake your fillings out…

…EDIT…and plenty of trails to get you to and from it that can be made as long or short as you like. For a good long ride it's worth heading over to Chatsworth which can be done with relatively minimal road work

All the recommendations above are ACE, and – apart from stubborn snow-drifts – this lot stays rideable through poor weather. The only downside is getting back up to the Cat and Fiddle where there is little option but to haul up a road climb

Watch out for MXers around 3 Shires HEad

Sorry Twang, a bit of a thread hijack there.

You'll probably still find a fair bit of snow where the trail is sheltered. Last weekend there was a fair bit of pushing both up and down. The climb out of Roych Clough to Mount Famine had a long section that was too snowy to ride effectively, and even coming down Jacob's ladder involved a push in the walled sections. It was fun on the sections coming off Rushop Edge (see the vid above) tho'

It's snowing today in Leek, so chances are more is coming down in the Dark Peak. Bring your bike to stick to the low and/or exposed sections to avoid the drifted snow still to melt

If it's any consolation Chris I fell off a few times too, but at least I did it on the slippy stuff and not in the middle of a packed car park. You did put a smile on my face tho'

There's an airport near the Dark Peak. I think it's called "Manchester". Catch a 'plane to Spain

Poppa makes a great point about geometry. I had a 120mm stem with a steep-angled head-tube and 80mm forks. I found it horribly wandery and unstable when climbing and downright worrying when descending. I now have a 90mm stem – and the obligatory wider riser bars – and it has transformed the handling both up and down hill (and along!).

I'd recommend borrowing off a friend and seeing how you get on

will give you an update…hopefully soon. They did have a half page ad in MBUK which lends them a bit more credibility…I think 😕

Perhaps I'm being unfair and I'm about to get a good deal on a great light. Fingers crossed

usually they have some entertainment value but last night was just poop. I feel ashamed that I didn't switch off, but I kept hoping it would get better. As for Cheryl Cole, I don't know what song she was miming to, but it wasn't the same as what she was dancing to.

Better still if you like music that hasn't been written or performed yet – just to keep an air of exclusivity.

    😆
I tried to be like that in my younger days

Robbie Williams – Outstanding Contribution to Music? Best joke I've heard all year

Why? He has been – and to a lesser extent still is – immensely popular with millions of people. Like him or loathe him he has recorded many memorable songs and performed bigger gigs than most artists can dream of. Are you playing the usual "all music is naff apart from what I like" card here? 😆

    EDIT

Quite, only ever awarded to folk that have done nowt for ages, I don't get it.

Eh? You mean apart from the album released in the last few months? This is not a Robbie love-in from me, but I've seen less deserving winners

Do people watch these programmes just so they can come on ST and moan about it the next day?

No, I watched it hoping to be entertained. Instead I have lost 2 hours of my life I will never get back 😯

Has anyone ordered from here; http://www.lumilite.co.uk

yes, on Friday. Not turned up yet but expecting them imminently. They are half price at the moment – £85 including postage

EDIT when you pay it takes you to a personal PayPal site of the guy who brings them in. I spoke to him on the mobile to check it is kosher. I'm keeping fingers crossed he was telling the truth 😯

I had a BMX as a kid and could do smallish wheelies and bunny hop, all without clips/cleats etc. Now when I try to bunnyhop with flats it's hilarious and often only just on the right side of a wipeout as my legs fly into the air.

As for wheelies, I get frightened any time I get near the balance point I'm aiming for. I need some evening practice when we get some more light, to reclaim those childhood skillz

EDIT I can bunnyhop pretty well with the help of cleats tho'

Mmm, not like me to miss a photo opportunity. I think I only saw myself once, although there was a familiar pair of 661 knee pads towards the end (still attached to knees might I add). Granted I did keep my head down and keep going on the last BIIGGG climb. I thought if I stopped I might not get going again…damn cold at the top tho'

    Good job Chris 🙂 Cheers

I just don't see the excitement in others I feel in myself.

The last thing I'm looking at when I'm going downhill is other people's excitement. There's quite enough dribbling down to contend with myself

o you get the same issue rdp'ing from the laptop to the main pc?

Can't check, because the home PC is XP home and therefore has no terminal server for remote access into it

    stilltortoise

Drac, I switch regularly from the laptop to the home PC; it's a simple keyboard shortcut. It wouldn't be practical to have two keyboards at all, not to mention having more cables to plug in when I boot up the laptop. At the moment nothing has to be plugged into the laptop. I definitely want to do this via software rather than hardware

    try somethign like logmein

never really got on with that, but I can't remember why 😕
I think it was more difficult to switch from local to remote PC than Remote Desktop. Might be worth trying again
As for keylogging, I've never had anything come up on any malware or virus scan and I'm pretty careful with stuff like that.

Cheers Gordy. Been baffling me too. It's not a new thing and doesn't always happen. I'm no touch typist but can get a reasonable pace on. The faster I type the more likely it is to occur. It's almost like the remote connection can't keep up, particularly since it doesn't seem to happen when I work on the laptop directly

    If you type …

    QWERTYUIOPASDFGHJKL;ZXCVBNM

… then what does it come out as?

    QWERTYUIOPASDDFGHJKL\ZXNM,.CVB

I may have mistyped a bit there, but notice that the CVB came after the NM instead of before

Why not just plug your screen into your laptop?

Too much faff connecting the home monitor and keyboard (my cables are all neatly cable-tied in place) and also I still need access to the home PC.

Can sometimes be the cruise control switch that causes this common fault.

if you check out civinfo you will find lots of problems with Civic clutches slipping "before their time". Might be the same with Accords.

I have a 56 Civic diesel, bought with 27k on the clock 6 months ago. I have had to have the clutch replaced due to slipping in similar circumstances to you. The car was out of the manufacturer's warranty so I had to cough up the labour, even though they did pay for the clutch as a gesture of good will (if ever there was a euphemism for owning up to the problem!).

Apparently there are stories of Civic Type R clutches going in 2000 miles 😯

That said, at 70000 miles you've not done too bad, but it is an engine out job
