If we ignore trail centres, I’d say Dark Peak area or maybe N Wales … anywhere with lots of rock.

So, you’ll be coming round with ice cream wafers half way through then … oh, and make sure there’s nowt funny going off at the back 😯

No bikes on the train … you’ll have to ride or push.

My tip would be – take loads and stick it in Ambrose’s trailer 😀

I got an Alpine because it doesn’t have such a long TT when compared to a 456, etc.

My 15″ has a BB height of 13″ unsagged running 120mm forks. Effective TT is 22″ and I’m running a 40mm stem. It feels / rides great. Doesn’t feel tippy at low speed and just gets better as speed increases … however I’m 5’7″ with long legs and a shorter body so the above won’t mean anything unless you’re the same 😉

    Very good 😉

I was up there yesterday and very nice it was too, I found a descent I’d not come across before. Real mix of rocks and mud, I’m thinking it’s one for riding in freezing conditions when some of it might harden / dry out a bit … I’ll as John and Paul what they think.

If the weather is ‘interesting’ I’ll bring along my BIG tarp, plenty big enough to get a few bodies under … but no snory bodies 😉

I’ve seen some cheap RAB Generators knocking about … make a nice compromise 😉

Just to confuse the issue I’ve got a RAB and rate it highly, no idea about the Ecto though.

Pretty sheltered for bag users with options for tarps. Tents should be fine rock/ground wise but may have to find room outside the “compound” … so if you’re tenting it you’ll have to fend the bears and wolves off, you also might find it difficult to watch flatfish’s 52″ plasma telly with surround sound from there 😀

If push really does come to shove then a roof is possible with an extension of the days riding (still heading in the right direction though).

Tiger as far as I’m concerned anything’s fine. I know flatfish will more than likely be in a hammock and he’ll no doubt be carrying an ipad loaded with films (so that’s everyones entertainment sorted).

Ride what you want and sleep in what you want … it’s all good 😀

Try getting in touch with Cambrian tyres, they’re the importers so if anyone has some it’ll be them.

If you’re building something with 3 wheels then that’s the way to do it. 2 at the front handles/works so much better than 2 at the back.

Try to find some footage of Morgans racing and you’ll get the idea, trikes on the other hand are more often than not an automotive abortion 😉

Ok then, looks like we’re on in one way or another, so some details so anyone interested can make an informed decision.

1pm meet up outside the Spar in Machynlleth (so we can stock up) on Sat’ Dec’ 4th. That should give us a bit of time for any faffing required.

I’m thinking somewhere around 25-30k at most for Sat and the same again for Sun return leg. Can’t escape climbing but hey it’s not a race. General direction of Nant y Moch.

We won’t see anything in the way of shops/pubs, etc till we get back into Mach’ on Sun, so you’ll have to carry whatever you think you’ll need … there will be ample water 😉 Lights might be a good idea just in case.

Expect it to be cold so I wouldn’t be wanting to spend the night in a pound stretcher sleeping bag … hip flasks may ease the situation if you’re that way inclined. Pseudo middle class party food would also do at a push 😉

Reckon that’s about it, everyone welcome regardless of bike or ability.

    Cheers
    Stuart

I get to ride with a lot of new riders and I have to say Llangegla comes up a lot in conversation. As a package it really does seem to suit those who perhaps haven’t been around bikes that long. As Tazzy says there’s plenty of other stuff to ride if it doesn’t float your boat.

I did some instructing for the FC a couple of years ago. At the time they were saying how they were going to focus more on green/blue type trails as that’s what the majority of visitors rode. The years prior had seen those who shouted the loudest getting heard … which was us lot, wanting more extreme stuff. They’d also realised the black type trails cost more to build and maintain.

*Yes, I know Llandegla is owned by Till hill not FC.

Nice answer rd … I’m off out into the fields with my tape measure, I reckon a ewe and one of this years lambs should equate to 1.5 sheep 😀

Didzy if you find that you use your smallest ring on the front quite a lot then I wouldn’t go 28 / 40. Depending on where you ride and how your legs are perhaps condider 22 / 36. You’ll keep your lowest gear and shouldn’t find you spin out too much on the flats … again depending where you live.

If you were going the way of 2×10 then 28 / 40 with a 36t rear would be good.

I had the same thing a few years ago. I was convinced that the axle wasn’t a tight enough fit in the dropouts but before changing the forks I tried a bolt up QR (if you see what I mean) problem sorted.

I’m running 1 x 10. No reason why your set up won’t work, just remember the Shimano 10sd chains must be fitted one way (writing on the outside).
