I was out at weekend with some people who are waiting on Revelate seat packs coming … they’ll be flying out to the US for the TD in 2 weeks.

You wouldn’t be on your own long … some of these lot will smell it from miles away and come flocking 😉

Molgrips speaks the truth … however a heavy bike might just win you the ‘heavy bike’ pork pie prize, so carrying loads of weight might be an advantage 😉

Here’s what I’d take as a minimum, taking into account that it’s Wales so might rain.

Sleeping bag … I spent a night out last week in a cheap, +10 synthetic bag and didn’t die.

Bivvy bag … Something like an AlpKit Hunka will be fine.

Sleeping mat … Cheap foam mat from somewhere like Field and Trek will cost under a fiver and won’t weigh much.

Polythene dust sheet … as a tarp it’ll last a couple of nights without any trouble. You’ll obviously need a set of cheap pegs and some cord. There’s some stuff on the WRT blog about attaching guys to the poly.

Sleeping bag, wrapped in bivvy bag, all tucked up inside a dry bag and strapped to the bars.

Add in a warmish top to kip in, a bit of food and some spare socks and you’ll not die.

You should have entered the WRT Psychle … that would have kept you busy enough and introduced you to lots of new people and places.

I’ve always found plastic/composite cages will let a bottle go on rough ground. Alloy / stainless ones have always been fine.

Blackburn ones are pretty good and not expensive. Bikebuddy cages are very secure as the bottle is held in place with springs, you can also fit different sized bottles which may prove handy for you Matt.

I haven’t got one … I have to use a normal ‘stick to your face’ dry bag 😀

I’ve a Nanok bag too, very nice. Oddly Nanok do a bag which is part down insulation and part synthetic … just in case you can’t make your mind up 😉

Look after a down bag and it’ll last years. A 4 season synthetic bag will be very heavy / bulky compaired to down. If you’re careful there’s no real reason why you’ll get a down bag wet even in a bivvy bag.

Can everyone please use white loo roll too … it breaks down much quicker than coloured stuff, ta.

Pistonbroke I’ve seen ’em but wouldn’t fancy a sunny afternoon in one let alone a rainy, windy night. Have a search for Nemo tents, they use air rather than poles and are very good.

On another note, if you were sorting out a pre-ride food stop there is a cafe in Llanbrynmair at Machinations.

    @Pete … I can’t wait 😉

Nice paving … very neat 😀

I was out all weekend (with Greg and Si, hi fellas) who were on a TD training weekend. We covered some fairly high mileage. I was riding my Inbred and carrying plenty of gear so the whole thing was pretty heavy. We also had tremendous headwinds much of the time, it also rained. The amazing thing is, regardless of what I’ve just said … we all had a great time, which is what it’s all about.

No one will have a better or worse time just because their stove is 4g lighter than someone elses 😉

EDIT: And I get page 9 … how good’s that?

Sounds a bit odd but I bought a peg bag that will (easily) convert into a bar feed bag type thing, like this one

    http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/shop/home_and_garden/laundry/pegspegbags/120128228_brabantia_clothes_peg_bag.html?CAWELAID=867855423

Not very heavy, drawcord top and not expensive for when it all goes wrong.

There’ll be an email going out to everyone next week with details of times, directions, etc.

If you get there early just look for the good looking bloke by the tipi … and ask him where I am 😉

@Bigface … I’m hoping we’ll get the raffle underway around 12.30. There’ll be nowt to do before hand except final panic and fannying about routines 😉

@Matt, no one as far as I know has ever had such a map before so I can’t see a problem with sharing it with those with a large enough band width 😀

I think the WRT is whatever you want it to be. There’s always a challenge to be had if you want it, just that it’ll be a personal challenge rather than against anyone else.

There should be a high level of satisfaction from getting the checkpoints you set out to … whether that be half or all of them 😉

EDIT: Very true, you can’t win the WRT. You can endure, survive, enjoy but you certainly can’t win.

While the Welsh midges perhaps aren’t as bad as their Scotish cousins … it has to be said that over the last few years they’ve got plenty of practice in 😉

@Ian, no I’m afraid 200g was a lie. I’ve just weighed it and it’s 230g inc stuff sack but mine has got a 12″ extension of the groundsheet on 3 sides which will make it slightly heavier than a standard one.

@Bigface … well done sir, you’re taking the meaning of adventure to new heights 😀

Harness makes the load much more stable (that should perhaps read, the right harness makes the load much more stable).

You shouldn’t find the midges too bad during the day … 8pm seems to be their time at the moment.

My Rab bag with net is great but there is a pretty big weight penalty but that’s perhaps more to do with the eVent fabric rather than the netting 😉

My Bearpaw mesh tent is also great for under a tarp, nice and light at around 200g.

Remember the midges are attracted to dark colours, so 90’s euro lycra could be the thing to be seen in 😯
