I shall be riding up some big Welsh hills, where I’ll sleep in a hammock before riding back down the big hills 🙂

    Skills course, women only perhaps?

http://www.forestfreeride.co.uk – A lovely posh voucher for a skills course, woman only, one to one or a mixed group … the choice is hers, so stops you getting the wrong thing 😉

No, it’s something to do with the forks themselves as part of their description, like ‘disc and V mounts’ or ‘rack eyelets’.

We live in a fantastic country, don’t let all the doom and gloom on the TV convince you otherwise.

That’s right … turn your TV off, don’t read the papers and the world’s a much happier place regardless of you’re individual situation.

Whilst not a race or involving stages, the Welsh Ride Thing might be worthy of consideration. Next year it takes place at the start of June. It’ll cost you less than £20 to enter, you’ll get a T shirt and all the tea and cake you can manage … oh and you’ll also get 3 days great riding 😉

    A few more details here – http://www.bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk

Mike email me stuart@bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk and I’ll sort you out … be nice in the depths of winter 😉

No, you’ll still be able to run low pressures. I mean that a 48mm rim won’t ‘pull’ the tyre out as much as it would if fitted to a wider rim.

Here’s mine … slag off at will 😉

Tyre will fit the rim fine, you just won’t get the full fat effect … it will still be a very wide tyre though 😉

Carbon cross forks had crossed my mind … what colour are your On One forks?

    stills8tannorm

With some very careful kit selection you might just sneak under a grand … no idea about doing it on C2W though. Maybe have a word with the Bike Monger about a frame.

Give it time and you’ll get used to it … it might even improve your riding 😉 I would just say the IME the On One rigids are very rigid!

I think your only way to get a fat bike for a grand will be to wait for On One. It’s been said that they’re hoping to sell a full bike for £999. Can’t see anything happening until spring though 🙁

Bigface are you talking about the Tim Woodcock route? I know that some of it is very difficult to navigate, certainly at the N end.

If you mean the ‘real’ Sarn Helen then good luck … not much exists anymore. There’s bits towards the southern end of Snowdonia and some parts in the Beacons are still good, otherwise there’s not much left 😉

If you want to go from N to S Wales mainly off road then I’d take a look at IanB’s route here

@Nick … The only thing I can be certain of reading that is that HE’S NOT GAY 😉

@Tommid … you’ll find someone to ride with pretty easily once entries open and the WRT machine lurches into action.

    @Molgrips

Timing didn’t work out this year though.

    What about 2009 and 2010? 😉

Anthony … no real choice. The bank holiday at the end of May is the traditional wrt weekend but next year the powers that be have decided to change the holiday dates due to the jubilee. We need 3 days so it has to be a bank holiday.

As long as the holidays return to normal then we’ll be back in May for 2013 😉

A front rack might be easier … something like an Old Man Mountain rack will fit something with suspension forks and no mounts.

I think Pistonbroke summed it up quite nicely there. It’s most certainly not a race … the BB 200 fills that space.

As for training, it will possibly be more enjoyable if you’ve got the fitness to ride a couple of biggish days back to back and don’t under estimate the effects of carrying your gear. However you don’t need to be super human to enjoy yourself. This years ‘WRT weigh in’ results brought home the different attitudes of people taking part 😉

Apart from the wait I can’t see many cons, that really does look like a lot of bike for the money.

Didn’t get any of the bara brith or any of my cookies I brought to the party.

That’ll be because you asked for something else instead … apple crumble and custard perhaps. Oh and the cookies were right nice, ta 😀

I made a cake for it

And jolly nice it was too, not to mention filling 😀

There should be a little write up in the next issue of XXC mag and I believe Jane (the only female finisher and holder of a *blue badge) has been asked to scribe a few words for this very website.

*That’ll be the one you get for finishing in under 28 hours, not the one that allows you to park closer to the suermarket doors!

A single night in summer shouldn’t be much of a problem. If it was multi-day and you had to carry food then you’d be needing a pretty big pack which really wouldn’t be much fun.

Don’t underestimate how much harder carrying stuff on your back will be compared to carrying it on the bike.

All the money generated by the Forest Freeride bunkhouse is donated to the Wales Air Ambulance as is everything raised by the Welsh Ride Thing … tends to add up to a few grand a year.

Glad to say I’ve never had to call upon their services 😉
