Me and Mrs Binners have had a wonderful everyone-else-free Christmas Day, apart from an early afternoon stroll to the pubGreggs to meet some friends, thus avoiding any of this nonsense….

I had hoped and suggested we get a takeaway curry for a change. Rather than cooking for half the day for most of it to not be eaten and then washing up for the rest of the day. Thought this was a spiffing idea personally

Totally agree. Only 2 of us this year, so couldn’t be arsed. This is the Xmas dinner for me and my son from local Nepaleseish

Don’t go too far on your first expedition. If it all goes to shit because you’ve made some horrible mistake or other, it’s a lot easier to recover from if your inaugural outing is your back garden.

Oh come on, where’s your sense of adventure? When it all goes to shit is where the fun starts :)

Fascinated by mileage you do, or is the Oz username a clue? Dirt roads following road trains

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. I have today requested a Cyclescheme voucher for the Ribble (disc, 105, carbon so perfect!).

After recommending it, I hope you like it as much as I like mine, fingers crossed :)

PS if you’re after mudguards for winter, SKS Longboard in the narrow size fit well after removing one bracket from the front one. Dry feet and arse :)

    Hi,

I had a Boardman Carbon (c9 I think) for three years, did about 15000 miles on it then hassle with BB coming loose in frame, and rims wearing out twice. Good bike tho.

Got a Ribble to replace it 30 months ago.Ribble 872
I got the cheaper Tiagra, cable disc version. So impressed. slightly heavier, but just feels better/stiffer. 13000 miles in now and only replaced pads a few times and the chain once, and a snapped brake cable (That was fun, downhill versus a John Deere coming up!!) Tyres swopped to GP5000 for normal use.

(even got a set of spare wheels for it now fitted with WTB Exposure 30s, that fit the frame easily, use for bike packing/mild off road/gravel

Can’t fault it apart from long lead time.

My local road riding is 98% of the time peaceful and pleasant and 1% ‘driver could do better’, 1% ‘rider could do better’

Totally agree Jameso. SM makes it seem so much worse

Average 5000 miles a year on road. (not commute mind)

My 1st batch of chillies have just popped up and I like checking their progress every day. Nurturing them from a seed right through to a delicious home made hot sauce is awesome.

More info please, We had chillie plants from garden centre last year which we were still harvesting in December, absolutely ace. Seeds ? indoors ? chillies all year round? the holy grail

For years I’ve ridden XC style mtb shoes with spds on my road bike.

I’m the same. Dunno if it would help but I’ve used shimano shoes for years, then tried some Giro shoes. Couldn’t get the cleat position right. Eventually had to extend the cleat slots rearward by about 3mm with a dremel so I could position the cleat further back. Now fine for me.

Why still such a focus on the military?

I suppose the massed ranks and bands of supermarket workers, warehouse staff (of which I am one), and various sports cheerleaders would have put on an equivalent show/tribute had they been asked last Thursday.

I’ve had a near crash where it would have helped.

Last run for the day, I hit a couple of steep-ish downhills then a fast sweeping right turn with trees on the outside.

I realised I had way too much speed, and I grabbed a bit too much front brake. Surface was loose stones and roots, and as soon the front wheel was locked, the bike straight-lined which put me on a path right towards headbutting a tree at approx 25 mph.

Took all of my will power to force my hand to let go of that brake and get the wheel turning again so I could get the bike turned. Every instinct was telling my to squeeze the brake more!

Very very scary, and I still have nightmares about it to this day!

The thing is, you learnt what to do, and now you are more experienced and it probably comes more naturally/second nature.

I had to do exactly the same driving Mk1 escorts in rallies. It’s called finding and extending your limit :)
