Usually the trail I am on, what’s coming up next, how should I tackle it, what route to take next etc, better than work and other real life stuff

Picked one up a couple of weeks ago (MET Parachute that is), very impressed with it in the Hong Kong summer, very ventilated and feels reasonably solid.

No doubt my head will explode though the next time I use it!

Take my GP3 out on the odd ride but its a general faff to edit down on my bog standard PC (no Mac for me), during a recent 3 day ride in Volcano managed to get the ride down to a few minutes, and even then it looks nothing like the fun experience it was().
I still watch mine for lines on regular rides but otherwise this….

Is showing GoPro movies the “slideshow holiday snaps from Costa Del Sol” for the modern generation?

As a Yeti fan, and past owner of a SB66c with cracked frame (my fault), I have been holding my breadth for a 650b SB66 just so I can move my components of the current Pivot Mach6 but I’m not sure about this departure from the existing switch tech.
As a current Mach6 owner I obviously take function over form (and the SB6 is pretty up until that bit above the BB) but I am still not convinced by the Infinity Switch and will wait to see how it survives your average UK winter before jumping.
Jared Graves could ride a tea tray around Whistler faster than me so lets see how Johhny average copes in the Scottish gloop, if it can survive that then the Hong Kong dust I am used to should be a doddle.

42 and no brand loyalty, just try to buy what is comfortable and not too ‘shouty’, which seems difficult these days, I’m not keen on brash loud trainers with wacky style soles etc.

Singletrack is pretty much the go-to place for information about mountain biking – I don’t know a single rider that doesn’t frequent this forum

Watch out for BA/Iberia, if your flight is delayed and the switch at Madrid is tight, Iberia are very good at loosing luggage (speaking from experience).

Tai Mo Shan Country park, Hong Kong, around Feb this year…

Some volcan riding in Bali earlier this year…

And a group pic from Fujimi Panarama MTB Park in Japan from last year…

All these pics make me want to both ride more and go to new places.

Bunked off work this afternoon, this is 30mins from my place after a little steep climb, Hong Kong is not all urban jungle.

And yes, its hotter than the sun out there even at 6:30pm.

Have you tried dropping the stem down one spacer, this certainly help me on my Mach6?

+1 the Osprey Raptor, great bag for all the reason listed above plus the great helmet carrying options, build quality is good also.

4k is great, and internet TV, and 3D and curved screens since I could buy a very cheap 40″ LED TV the other day for peanuts because it had none of the above, it just supported good old HD (1080p for BluRay/AppleTV and 1080i for local TV) with enough HDMI ports for what I needed.
Unless there is a major shift to internet based TV content to support the broadcast of 4k content (and lets face it, most content is still via digital Ariel or satellite) then it will go the way of 3D.
Also, that resolution is pretty pointless on a big screen as your eyes would not be able to differentiate from a distance, however for close in tasks such as gaming it is great.
Anyway, the Japanese are working on 8k now……

Was having a similar chat with two ex-pat mates the other day about the bikes we ride in hong Kong (ones a teacher from Sheffield, another a Quantity Surveyor from Edinburgh) compared with what we had in the UK or bought over with us, example:
Me: UK Bike – 2007 Gary Fisher Tassajero (Still going) HK Bike – 2014 Pivot Mach 6 with XX1/XTR/Pike Build
Mate 1: UK Bike – 2011 Lapierre Spicy (Alloy) HK Bike – 2014 SC bronson with XX1/XTR/Pike Build
Mate 1: UK Bike – 2010 SC Heckler (Alloy) HK Bike – 2014 SC bronson with XX1/XTR/Fox 34 Build
I am certainly not rich but with no need for a car, a low tax rate both on salary and when buying (bikes are around 30% cheaper here than the UK) and a love of riding then I am going to buy what I can afford, I am never going to get the chance if I return back to the UK.
If you though that the UK bike parks where full of rich ex-golfers with Audis and Santa Cruz’s then you should come here, I have never seen such expensive bikes being wheeled around….and I used to ride in Surrey!

Enjoying the ride except for two minor issues, rubbish cable routing (without frame protection in place you will saw the seat tube off after a few rides!) and no where sensible to put a bottle.

I’ve always thought that owning a Yeti was similar to Alfa ownership for petrol heads…though thats maybe because I have owned both.
+1 on Specialized and Raleigh ownership, any model.

Clear Oakley Radar lenses for Hong Kong, and recently Bali, as I found the transition lenses useless when moving between open (very bright sunlight) and high density forest areas (sudden loss of light).
At this time of year its also good to combat the very large spiders that like to set their webs up at head height.
I would never ride without glasses, its up there for importance with wearing a helmet on the trail to me.

Pivot Mach6 (Medium frame) with 160mm Pikes, XX1 and XTR build.

12.28kg with pedals which is not too bad considering it wasn’t spec’d for weight saving, its cheaper and healthier for me to lose weight anyway.

For function above looks I’d go for the Transavia PL-12, its still pretty awesome.

One suggestion, if you not living too healthy a lifestyle now I suggest you start soon, the body can only handle so much abuse before it starts fighting back.

Last week, a steep, rutted, wet and slippery descent about 18-20 metres in length, I couldn’t for the life of me get down it without sliding off, unlike everyone else who achieved it.
On the umpteenth attempt I gave up and threw my bike down in anger, only for it to stay upright all the way down and come to a nice sedate stop against a tree at the end….in full view of everyone else.

I actually managed to break my old Yeti SB66c frame, fell off down a trail and a sharp rock managed to put a small crack in the top frame (just before the seatpost). Didn’t actually notice this until a week later when a mechanic at my LBS pointed it out just before I had planned to sell it, long story short, had to pay for a crash replacement but that week in between I rode it as I usually did and I did not die.

I ride its replacement, a Mach6, just the same as all my previous bikes, carbon or alloy.

If you are wary of carbon or other exotic materials then probably better not to fly, or drive, or even ride a bike probably.

I would have thought that the current Syria conflict, much like that in Iraq, is a blessing for the western countries (read USA) as it keeps both Islamists and Sryia/Hezbollah busy killing each other, almost a win win situation.
All they have to do is stoke the fires a little and ensure that each side does not gain to much of a strategic advantage, it also de-stabilizes a Russian client state into the bargain.

We have holidays here on the 1st (Labor Day) and Tuesday (Buddhas Birthday….yes) so going to Bali with 4 others to ride the trails there, including going down a volcano which should be fun.
Will post some pics/video next week if I get time to take some.
