Had a close call on the Malverns a year or so back when, heading down a fast rocky descent. The run comes out on a grassy plateau but there are 3 raised steel access points (like man holes but about 1 foot high). I caught the step wrong on the exit, turned the front wheel square and got catapulted through the air towards one of the covers. Just about managed to get my hand out to push myself off the corner of the cover. Had I not done I would have face-planted onto the corner of the steel cover…It would have been very messy..
Is it for a single speed? Would make life easier without the shift ramps etc. If I could find some info on the tooth shape etc it could be doable. What would make it easier would be to have one to copy..
I’ve built lots of lights using normal optics without any problems but I built an MC-E light for my helmet using a reflector and it’s awesome. The beam is perfect for a helmet light.
I think one of the big problems with reflectos is that, to work properly, they need to be quite big. Mine, for a single LED, is 35mm diameter so for multiple LED’s they are just not practical.
For the money you can’t beat Smudge’s lights..
Very rarely travel to ride. I live at the foot of the Malverns so, within 15mins, I’m off the road and into a big climb up.
Does get busy at weekends but for night riding it’s perfect. No evening walkers so only really get the odd like minded biker or 2 out (unless you go on a Thursday when there’s a group of about 20 from Colwall).
When the weekends get busy we do head off to the FoD or Wales tho but that’s only an hour away too :-)
Drop Smudge an email @ mtbbatteries.co.uk . He may be able to build you a battery to suit which, assuming you current battery is not Li-Ion, would last longer and be lighter/smaller.
Battery is currently in a bottle but will need to go in a pouch as my new frame won’t take a bottle. Run time is nearly 2 hrs on full power, not that I’ll need full power much 8O
I’ve got a pair of the MX140 Lake’s. Used them all winter down to about -12 (when the whole of the UK was white) with good quality walking socks.
Great off the bike too when walking/pushing..
Looking at the state of Chumba in the US, I wouldn’t touch one with a stunt c***. Check out a load of the threads in here; http://forums.mtbr.com/chumba-racing/
Coverts are brilliant bikes.
Yeah, been reading up on Chumpa’s dealings….not good! Will avoid like the plague.
I can recommend the on one 456 carbon. I run mine with a 50mm stem, 150mm forks and chunky 5.1 dt swiss wheels. Really great handling, chuckable and weighs in at 25lbs…
The shimano and hope ones should be a straight swap. I changed mine for a Hope with stainless steel bearings, lasted longer than the crank.
Got shimano XT now and that’s turning perfectly..
Some good info on that thread metalheart, thanks. I do find the “right material, wrong material” quite funny….but TBH if I like the way a bike rides I couldn’t give a monkey’s if is made of mud and twigs.
It looks like a nice bike, the geo looks good. I need me a test ride…
There doesn’t look like enough heat sinking to run the light full power for long without things overheating. Hopefully I’ll be wrong and it’ll be a great light tho :-)
Riding around the side of the Malverns last winter: there is a section where they put cattle to ‘keep the vegetation down’ and it’s right in the way of our winter run.
Anyhoo, riding past the cows is normally quite easy as they stay out of your way and let you pass. Unless your my mate Si when the cow he was passing decided to give him the cold ‘udder’ and, as he went around the outside of said cow with a nice steep drop on the other side, the cow decided to edge slowly towards the outside of the path knocking him down the slope into some very deep bracken and gorse.
Needless to say none of us laughed and helped him up straight away..
Maxxis Minions for me too on the front in the winter(2.35 single ply). I ride the Malvern Hills which can be pretty wet/sticky in the sheltered spots but has nice loose and solid granite too. Nothing has come close to the Minions in the wet. Use an Ardent on the front in the summer..fast and sticky :-)
Can’t go wrong with these for the money: http://www.mtbbatteries.co.uk/mountain-bike-lights/
They are chinese made but come with a full UK backup…a few of my mates have bought from here and had no problems at all.
For just over £200 you could have a 2000 lumen bar light and a 1000 lumen helmet light.
If I wasn’t making a light, I’d be going this route..
Hi mate
Lovely looking bike. I’m looking at a VF2 at the mo to replace my 456C as it feels little small for me. I was thinking that the Large might be better for me as I’m 6′ tall. Would you say it feels much more compact than the 456? I don’t want to bite the bullet to find it’s too small.
Cheers
