Thanks Jeff. Yes, I see what you mean references the seams between cuts. The nature of the track seemed to allow those wide angle shots, and we could get away with a little poor timing.

We’re hoping to try much more technical riding next time out, so we’ll need to work on that.

TSC, about 10 minutes of total footage, riding time of around 3 hours, that was the tiring bit, constantly repeating the runs. An out-take video will be on the cards too!

Well, this weekend I stripped the rear hub. Bearings on one side completely gone, pretty much no grease, badly pitted race, cone and bearings. Freehub lose. New hub and wheel rebuild time!

Excellent video, trails look class 8)

Frankly, that’s very tame compared to the Northern Irish crap that’s spouted when I ride!

I had a 2009, replaced with a L 2010 after the seat tube crack. I echo the above post, good bike can be made a little sharper with those changes. I’m running QR front and back, and to be honest, I don’t know any different so it works for me. Suspension is very nice, rear end does feel limitless in it’s travel. I think the climbing postion is good for me, though I think it’s too short for me anyway, but this can be advantageous at times.

If it comes with a warranty, go for it.

    Thanks Sam.

How can I tell if it is the freehub body for sure?

I don’t want to waste £30 on a replacement one for the problem to come back after half a dozen rides.

And and cheers Tim. I’m hoping to strip the hubs this weekend, I bought some new cone spanners.

    Thanks

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it’s a SRAM cassette, PG970. On further inspection this morning the wheel seems to be slightly lose itself too, as in holding the bike up and wiggling the rear wheel at the top shows some play, but not as much as the cassette.

Maybe I should just get the bus?

Whatever happened to people just buying a bike that fitted well and was fun to ride? I remember when I was buying the Meta 2 and a bit years ago and people harped on about it’s lovely slack 68 HA, didn’t mean an awful lot to me, now people are saying here 68 isn’t slack enough?

Catch a grip guys, look at the whole package, not just top tube lengths and head angles.

    Colour is important too

My XT’s are going strong after two years. Will be serviced sometime soon.

Expect a thread on how I’ve f**ked it up.

Rose Bikes are out of stock and will be for some time according to their website.

I know guys who have ran the older XT’s with good reports, however the new SLX seem good too.

Usually sneak a banana in before the return journey, though it’s only 5 miles each way on the flat.

A new brake squeak developed on this morning commute!

Steve, thanks for the reply. When I fitted the mudlover cables I set them up correctly, as I do everytime. I took cable stretch into account and made some adjustments after the first lot of rides. Then after a couple of settled rides, the problems always arise.

Brakes seemed okay in the heavy rain tonight though!

Thanks for all the replies so far.

It’s just very frustrating for me. I will re-adjust the gears again and see how I get on. I’m tired of cleaning the pistons. Popping them out to clean them fully means a re-bleed.

Yes, mudlovers with the sleeves. I bought them because I thought that standard cables getting gunked (depsite regular cleaning) was giving me the shifting issues.

Oh, and all Shimano apart from the SRAM cassette.

Gear cables are mudlovers, so not gunked up at all.

P.S. Rear mech hanger is fine. Indexing is out AGAIN. I’m basically down to about 3 gears together in the range that I can shift between without it jumping. New gear cables fitted quite a few months ago along with my SLX double and a new cassette and chain.

If the issue is un-even piston movement/retraction then fix that, don’t just keep moving the calliper around, the calliper should always be central over the disk and the pistons should move and retract evenly.

Totally correct, I agree. I’ve had constant problems with the pistons not retracting evenly, pretty much after 1 year of use. They get cleaned regularly, but the problem always returns. I know that re-centering the caliper is wrong, but it’s a short term fix when I’m at work/out riding.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the maintenance and the tinkering side.

But seriously, today for example. Front breaking squealing on the commute to work. Loud enough that pedestriains were giving me funny looks. Get to work, flip bike over, a normal spin of the wheel stops it in about half a rotation. I know for a fact i’ll adjust it today and it’ll be back tomorrow. I’m sorry, but I shouldn’t have to adjust brakes a couple of times a week ffs.

Yes, I’ve made minor adjustments via the barrel, it sorts about 2 gears, the rest end up being out by more.

Learn to spanner properly? Other than follow the manual and use my brain, things never seem right. Silcky smooth XTR shifting my arse!

I quite like the look of this I can call into CRC and try their jackets as I’m only 30 minutes away. Fit will be important, I’m 6 2″, long arms!

I have a 2011 Exposure Maxx-D for the bars and a Hope Vision 1 for my helmet. Works very well, into my second winter with them and can’t see me upgrading until they brake.

Thanks for all the MTFU recommendations. I’m booking an appointment for next week. My girlfriend also wears contacts and has given me similar advice to the above :D

The Oakleys will get their use, I really loved wearing them in the summer, not so much now the cooler weather has set in.

    Cheers

I can confirm I am NOT running or walking to work.

I’ll have a look at some bikes over the weekend and decide.

Thanks again for all the responses

Pretty much all of my riding is reached on the bike from my house. I don’t have a car, and haven’t for the past 10 months. I only miss it for when I want to head away and ride somewhere on my own.

Thanks for all the replies. On a side, does anyone have experiences of those Nexus 3-speed hubs?
