st Anthony parker  WTF is that and a parka?  Unless you are in the Yukon or the 1970s then no. Actually was it lord anthony? You know you could zip up the hood to create a furry snorkel.

Thanks. Useful advice. Re specific strengthening excercises is there eg any you tube vids that would recommend that show me specifically what to do? Footflps your link is great but not entirely sure what any of those exercises are.

Just to be clear I’m really not implying just tories although I do think they are probably worst perpetrators. Tories just a convenient proxy for the range of parties and people so keen to retain the union but somewhat spurious or quiet on clear reasons for why. Interesting that some of above quickly veers away from why to Scotland couldn’t survive we should be great full etc and rehashing the history rule Britannia stance that I just don’t think washes.

It’s not just a Tory thing though – labour just as keen. Agree on tax returns dafyyd.

Having recently entered my fifties these retirement posts are increasingly relevant and really interesting with lots of great advice. I’m always a bit disappointed however that there isn’t more on what people do and will do in retirement. People say never going to be an issue filling their days but then don’t seem to expand much beyond coffee cycling and pottering. I’ll retire in my sixties and really not sure how much cycling in practice I’ll do. I def want to go holidays but will massively depend on finances. I get pottering but am scared that in practice I’ll lack motivation and just watch lots of tv. Are people confident they will fully enjoy their retirement and be great to hear more fully what people intend to do with their time.

Ruling elite using the war as a mechanism to encourage normal people to reinforce the narrative that we are best ruled over by public school types.

Is there a school of thought that you’re better to spend now while younger and fitter and can enjoy life, work till 67 and accept you’ll be poorer when less able to do the good stuff anyway.

I used to work in bridgeton in Glasgow a hotbed of rangersness and orangery. One day in July a wee man from the council came to take down the union jacks tied to the lampposts invoking the councils non sectarian policy on council property. A crowd gathered. He ended up in the Clyde.

This smacks of middle class Scottish people pretending to know working class Glaswegian.

Glasgae used by people not from Glasgow trying to sound Glaswegian. Think russ abbot. And not to be confused with our annual celebration of homosexuality glasgay.

James Kelman is your go to for an authentic Glasgow voice.

5-0 comes from the Wire and not Glaswegian.

When I retire I will spend as much time as I can exploring European cities. Just wandering. Getting off the beaten track to discover interesting nooks and crannies. Losing myself in the city lapping up its feel atmosphere culture. Having a coffee , sitting in a park, reading a book in the sunshine, watching people, strolling with no purpose or timeframe. Taking in the sounds and smells and totally relaxing. Unfortunately this is still 17 years away.

Hi, thanks very much for responses/advice. Have a monitor and had a 24 hr monitor. BP consistently high. Started on 2.5 mg ramipril but bp remained high. Now on 10 mg. By diet ok I mean I eat fruit and veg drink water occasional red meat etc but I do eat too much sugar (if a factor). Re exercise I aim for three times a week with lots of walking in between. I do what is realistic and sustainable for me. Generally what I’ve taken from comments is that weight loss is worth persevering with and I will try harder. But that ultimately it may be genetics (dad has high bp) and I’ll keep taking the meds. I reckon I’ve probs had high bp for a number of years given what I know now. I’m interested in some comment on headaches as I’ve started to get migraines over last few yrs. Doc says not related. Next time I’m in se Asia I’m definitely getting me some bark.

Thanks very much for responses. Lots of good points. I think one of my main concerns as pointed out is needing the money to support my family. My eldest is 16 and likely to be at uni in a couple of years with associated costs. Wife sympathetic but really quite concerned about having less money – not being unsupportive, just honest. I also agree that fear of unknown is a factor. I’ll continue to mull and let you know if anything life changing results.
    Cheers
