    I’d say you’ll get away with 38T. It just means you’ll spend most of your time on the higher end of the cassette than on the lower end. As long as you keep a (small) small chainring, you’ll have everything you need to get up and down – plus you’ll have a bit more speed for the downs. I’d say ideal is 36T – but you could always try it out with the things you have first, before buying a new chainring. Regarding longer bolts, I got mine from Race Face (in steel).

    You can get schraders that screw down to the rim as well…

    Fair enough, I didn’t know that.

    I don’t understand what kind of “impact” would effect schrader but not presta, and I’ve never had tubes move in the tyre…

    Ever had a branch caught in the wheel that ripped the valve? I guess not. Just trying to help mate – drill the rims if you wanna.

    Presta come with a screw down lock ring that secures the valve in the hole. I’ve had several schrader tubes ripped at the valve through impact or tube movement. Not had that with Presta. Drilling aluminium can create a lot of difficult to remove burrs that can cause punctures. Carry a spare tube, a repair kit, and a hand pump that has a tiny adapter in the handle. No problem. It’s up to you, innit. But take a drill to your nice new rims rather than buy a couple of inner tubes – really?

    I did this on mine (36T Deore) and got a BBG bashguard. It’s pretty indestructible (comes with lifetime warranty) and even when shipped from the US (takes about two weeks, no import duties) – was cheap as chips. About £10 all in. And the best thing is that it was actually lighter than the big ring it replaced…

    Btw – I recommend going with steel bolts if your chainset came with aluminium.

    Haven’t found anything that grips the pedals as well as Stealth rubber from 5.10. And if you’re following Eurobike, they are bringing out the Freerider in a lighter version, better colours and possible non-spongelike tongue… Finally….

    I’ve been Jedi’d as well, I also also follow BikeJames as per @edlong. I still ride both, depending on conditions and expected trail. Generally ride flats if I know its going to be technical. But equally, clips can be good for rough and fast as you don’t loose you footing (on a hardtail). Horses/courses.

    T’was a great programme, I love all this stuff as well. What’s great was that when I was a kid, everyone said the universe is infinite and would never end. Then 15 years later they were saying that the universe was finite and there would be a big crunch. 15 years later still, and we’ve come full circle.
    Couldn’t help thinking that they used simple trigonometry to measure that the universe is flat – but only to three decimal places. So it could still be that the universe is curved, just so little that we have trouble measuring it – or that its soooo big that the numbers wouldn’t mean anything to us, therefore we can consider it to be infinite…

    @MrSalmon – it was narrated, with small pieces by assorted astro physicists. Always a good sign, as it means they have so much info to pack in that they don’t have time for a celebrity presenter.

    Does Hoxton fashion define Beckham? or, perhaps more ironically, does Beckham define Hoxton fashion? Are all these cycle couriers with ironic facial hair, 1950s sweep backs and full sleeve tattoos just copying the most obvious fashion pin-up on the planet? Discuss…

    Very exciting. If reports come back that it works well (and it looks like they’ve covered most of the bases where other posts fall down – pun intended), I might even sell the GD and buy one in 27.2

    Decathalon all the way. You can save money and buy the Triban 3 (carbon forks,) or blow your budget on the upgrade Triban 5:
    Linky
    I was looking into this recently as well.
    * Comes in a good range of sizes (very important)
    * 10.5kg
    * Carbon fork
    * Shimano 2300 is entry level but reliable
    * Amazing value bike – perfect for getting up to speed with the triathalon.
    Here’s a discussion about the bike on another cycle related site, with some hi-res pictures:
    Another Linky
    However, if you want female specific, maybe look at Boardman bikes on eBay from last year?

    Could be anything. Call bank asap, and download and scan PC with both Malwarebytes anti-malware and the free version of Prevx. These are very powerful anti malware tools, while Prevx has a specialism in keyloggers. Then you can rule out your PC while you get your log in and card numbers changed.

    Wife bought me a Madison Telegraphe (or whatever it was called then) a couple of years ago and it’s been great – very well vented. Only jacket I’ve never really had condensation issues with. Far too warm for summer though, and no roll-away hood for off-bike activities. Pak-A-Mac for summer rain.

    +1 Cobra. Not sure how, but apparently it’s made exactly the same way, then through some form of magic and witchcraft, the alcohol is extracted. There’s quite a few mail order places as well that will allow you to try a mixed delivery so you can see which ones are the best, and Waitrose stocks a couple of different brands. I gave up alcohol for a few months when I was giving up smoking (couldn’t do one without the other). I recall Erdinger and some of the Bavarian ones being good. Alch-free seems to come out wheatier – so wheaty beers are more likely to taste the same in their alch-free versions.

    I must say starfanglednutter I’m glad that you clearly gave up comedy ‘eons ago’ in pursuit of something you have to be less terrible at!

    Like I said (quite clearly, I thought), I was a barman, not a performer. Anyway, I think the post has been taken down for having too may swear words, or possibly being too awful, so others are spared the pain of casting heir eyeballs over it.

    Sorry if anyone was offended (?!) Have coat, am leaving…

    The other night I was working on a case. I was working on a case as I couldn’t afford a desk. Suddenly I heard a tap at the window. I looked at the window and thought “that’s a funny place to put a tap”. The curtains were drawn, but the rest was real. I opened the window and there was a tall blonde outside. I say she was tall as I was on the 10th floor. Next we took the lift downstairs. I was kinda heavy, but we just about managed. Then a taxi came round the corner with a jerk. The jerk got out and we got in…

    I’m running 2nd hand 720 Fatboys. They started at 750, but I looked and felt like I was doing a super hero impression on the bike. They also snagged on my hips, the ground and ladies with prams. I’m 5″7′, so shortish arms and 720 are just right. Never had a problem with trees, but it can be a struggle getting them through my stupidly thin front doorway and getting them up the stairs without taking all the jackets in the entry hall with me. Most people I ride/ have ridden with are on the wider bars now and agree they provide more control. Short stems are a good idea, how sort depends on the bar sweep. My suggestion, get some 2nd hand 750s and try them out. You can always trim if need be, or get used to them and go wider later.
