not sure about a lighter version, but I have a Sutra and was concerned about the weight prior to purchasing. Honestly mate , its not an issue, it rides superb. OK you are not going to break any TT records , but its not designed for racing. As a touring/commuter bike its superb. strong enough to carry everything and comfortable enough for all day riding. I love mine.

as above plus
pedals off
spacers inbetween the disc pads.
handlebars off and taped to top tube with levers touching frame if possible, stem turned ‘inwards’.
polystyrene round chainrings.
i gently wedged polystyrene between the disc rotors and spokes too.
don’t forget to take a roll of tape with you to assist in repacking the bag upon your return

I’ve had a Sutra for quite some time now. Never had any issues with the bar end shifters – in fact i think they are great.

I absolutely love my Sutra, bit heavy and not the fastest thing with drop bars , but it rides beautifully. Just got back from a very enjoyable 30 mile jaunt up and down the trans pennine trail. Did a 40 mile towpath ride last week, with some mates on their mountain bikes and only thing that caused concern was the tyres in the muddier sections – easy fixed as some CX tyres are on the list for my birthday coming up.

i also use it on a daily basis for commuting (at least 10 miles each way) – it copes with that very well too.

Great bike – and well worth the money

KONA SUTRA

racks front and rear – check
full mud guards – check
disc brakes – check

not 26″ wheels and not flat bars though, but you could easily change this, although changing the wheels does lower the already low(for stability) bottom bracket.

If you are using full racks and full mudguards you’re not going to be doing anything too technical off-road so why the need for 26″ wheels ???
I’ve got the 2009 Sutra and have used it on a number of occasions off road with no problems, just change the yres to suit the conditions and ride within the limits of the bike.

I’ve also in the past had a full set of racks and mudguards fitted to my (very) old Clockwork utilising a rigid fork and some ‘clip on’ bottle cage bosses to mount the front rack –

Worked OK but was no way near as stable as the kona when loaded with panniers etc.

almost everyday = 10 miles to train station, 1 mile to office, various miles to appointments.

Kona Sutra -full mud guards, front and rear racks, etc. etc. Full set of panniers, front, back, top rack allows me take all I needwhere ever I need. Love it !

I hope their (our) times not coming to an end, or that would be me out of work.

Speaking as a fulltime union official, its not at all about striking. It’s about defending jobs, public services, communities, your childrens futures, pensions, and thats just for starters. Fact is that the country is facing the most savage attack from its own government since the ‘years of the witch’.
If you want to see what happens when Tory economic and social policy is applied have a day out in Redcar, or Ravenscraig or any other town or community that had its heart ripped out in the eighties.
I could go on all day (and do most days , as that’s what I get paid for).
A lot of people on here have already started raising concern over the privatisation of forestry land. Maybe we all need to look a bit further and see what other ‘wonderful’ ideas Mr Cameron has to sell off, I would say the family silver, but the witch did that with coal and steel etc.
Admittedly not everyone will be affected badly by te cuts, I suppose the toffs will benefit and a few ‘I’m alright Jack f##k you’ types with little or no moral conscience may profit off the backs of the rest of us. But for the majority you will be affected in a negative way. It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee.

March the 26th London – I’ll see you there.

Bike packing vs Bike touring ❓

Anyhow – I’m off round the Trossachs area for a long weekend in July. Planning a few other long weekends possibly Offas Dyke, Trans Pennine Trail C2C, Lakes.

More than likely take the Kona Sutra and a tent for these trips as they’ll be a bit on bit off road. But I’m also planning the odd ‘for one night only’ bivvy on the hardtail carrying most of my kit in a Karrimor Barley saddle bag.

I’ll get my pipe.

@Basil -how can/does the small chainring cut into the bottom bracket ?
surely the bb is central to all chainrings 😕

I’ve got mine set up onthe back wheel for the turbo. TBH its not perfect,I’ve had to fit the sensor as high as possible on the seat stays (whilst still been in line with the spokes ) and I’ve also had to angle the actual computer vertical (as opposed to horizontal) in order for it to pick up the ‘signal’.

To be honest though unless you have a cadence meter (apart from clocking the mileage) a heart rate monitor is much more beneficial for turbo sessions.

Have a look at this website for some pretty good workouts.

according to my mam ,my great grandad used to be a competitive cyclist around the turn of the last century (1890’s-1900’s approx.) When we were little I can remember going to my grandad’s and helping my mam clean a massive silver trophy, which apparently was a trophy my great grandad had won for cycling – my mam’s not sure if it was national, county (yorkshire) or local (Leeds/Morley/Bradford).- sadly when my grandma (my mam’s stepmother died) we think her family may have taken it or it was sold at some point.
I’ve tried on a number of occasions to try and find out more about my great grandad but I’m not having much luck (my mam can’t remember which cycling club he was in) -if anyone hasany ideas of how/where to find any info I’d be very greatful.

This is serious stuff. Not so long back a guy died as a result of hitting trees put on a trail to stop mountain bikers in some of our local woods.
see here.

I’ve also come across wire strung at neck height , supposedly to stop motorbikes – OK I agree they shouldn’t be ridden on the trail where the wire was, but it’s predominantly young lads that are riding there. Do we really want people to die over issues of land access ?

You need to get on to your rights of way officer right away, and if you ever see anyone in the act report it to the police.

had mine a few years now – used it for everything from a 12 hour solo to tour of Cuba. Love it. Handles well, looks good and the finish is superb. Well thought out geometry etc. Perfect for British trails (plenty of mud clearance, full cables etc.)
Run mine with 100mm Rebas and a 90mm stem with Mary bars at the minute but have run it with longer forks and both flat bar and bar ends and riser bar – in my experience it loses a bit if you go above 120mm of travel. I’ve been riding mountain bikes, predominantly steel hardtails for over 20 years now andI can honestly say its the best off road ride I’ve ever been on.

just looked at the pics again ( I am on my fourth Erdinger) = route the chain on the other side of the tab _or whip it off it won’t be an issue

stAn-BadBrainsMBC
Free Member

???????? WTF ??????
it would appear that you have the chain routed correctly , but from the photos it looks like the tab on the back plate is in the wrong place ??

It definately shouldn’t comeinto contact with the chain like it shows in the pics – a bet its as noisy as f##k .

If I were you I’d get the dremel out and whip the tab off – once you’ve done this you may need to re-index your gears

On the plus side your jockey wheels look like they have a considerable amount oflife left in them

Oh… nice pumpkins 😀

stAn-BadBrainsMBC
Free Member

in order to be slightlymore constructive than couldashouldawoulda, have you checked that the chain is routed around the jockey wheels andmech cage correctly ?

the chain should only come into contact with the front mech when it ‘pushes’the chain in/out of a gear and the cogs (ie: chainrings, cassette, jockey wheels )

it sounds ver strange that the cage of the mech is wearing out – I have had the odd one get a few gouges and scratches but wearing out? I’m confused – any chance you could post some pics of your current set up to help us assist you further.

Oh and by the way if your jockey wheels look like pointy ninja throwing stars rather than this

you need some new ones
