Ice two years ago spent christmas on morphine with my chest smashed in from some unexpected ice behind water bar. I’ve had my best winter in years been riding 2-3 times a week since September. But i think this really cold snap may put pay to that.

I’m going through the process of updating my prophet. Last week dropper post, new tyres and wider bars. Rode it twice at the weekend, i’d say the tyres and bars made a bigger change than the post. Arriving this week, new pedals, brakes, stem can’t wait.

I have the machine in the video and it’s my number 1 household gadget. Had it for four years and if it broke tomorrow I’d buy another. I’m sure you can get a better coffee from a more expensive machine or if you know what tamp pressure is but I have to get three kids to school and nursery most mornings and getting my expresso in 30 seconds is god send.

My daughter is as ginger as they come no one in my family is ginge and nor is anyone in my wifes family. But we do have a lot of Scottish, irish and northern European DNA. So i dont think that Chesney has been poppung round whilst i’m out biking.

My parents have black hair i had briliant blonde hair until i was five then i got gradually darker. My middle boy was the same he’s has brown hair now but had almost white hair whem he was one. I wouldn’t take hair colour has an indication of paternity.

I see this a work the many of the senior guys ride road bikes now, when I started 20 years the then senior guys played golf. I’ve even heard one of my colleagues say its not what you know its who you ride your bike with.

I bought an issue of cyclist magazine a few months ago, they regularly review bikes that are £8,000+ (i know there are mountain bikes that cost this much) but they lost me when they called £4000 bike entry level. A triban 3, Boardman or px bike is entry level.

I have a agree with Vincie, I spend the final week of our holiday in the Vendee primarly for the beaches but they have fantastic signage on their cycle paths and the tourist information had books of suggested routes we ended up cycling everyday. the routes could be followed by anyone it was similar in the il de re. So much so that were going back again this year. The NCN around here drives me mad. It does nothing to encourage cycling. You can often find a post with four or five numbers on and its impossible to follow even for an experienced cyclist a novice would have no chance.

Plus how many cycle routes in the UK come with tyre inflation stations

I also agree with the article and with Winston about good surfaces encouraging youngsters to ride

This is the cycle from Lourdes to Pierrefitte-Nestalas at the foot of the col de tourmalet. My five year old cycled 24 miles on it in the summer when you’d struggle to get him to do 10 miles on the disused railway in the peaks which have a poorer surface. This is in a slightly more scenic location than Horsham,

I’ve been thinking about this as I was considering a SC Bronson or 5010 but both have single pivot equivalents with exactly the same geometry etc, which might be better suited to the wet gritty conditions we have around here. Has anyone tested new Heckler vs a Bronson for example to see the differences in the linkage designs.

I watched them doing it and chatted to a few of them non of them appeared to be enjoying it, mind you they just run through the night and must have been -6C up there as it was -3C in macc when I got up. how many finished I heard only one person finished last year.

I was riding frozen cheeky trails in Goyt very early on Sat am. There an 160 mile ultra marathon. They were running 55 2.9 mile laps from the cat and fiddle to the top of shining tor and back. I can’t think of anything more tedious.

I think Cotic woukd be mad to bring out a 26 inch fs. A steel FS is already niche product to then make it even more niche by sticking with an obsolete wheel size doesn’t make business sense. Not matter how much people on here might want one the market has moved on. I’m currently riding a 26inch 456 with 9 speed a straight headtube and qr wheels and non dropper post and absolutly love it. But my next bike and a i think its true for most will be 27.5 11 speed tapered headtube maxels and have a a dropper post.

They wouldnt wamt to stuck with a load of stock they couldn’t shift quickly. Look at the Gyro’s that Orange have just have to sell at less than 1/2 price.

Cookci we sometimes ride around kerridge and bollington and Rainow then down teggs nose for a change. Far bit of road to link up the tracks though.

I had 29 inch inbred and didn’t get on with it. I do own Steel and Ti 456 and an 26 inbred. To be honest a 26 Scandal sounds like the ideal bike for egat you want to do.

Been fat and old but spending my summer hols riding in the Pyrenees my road bike and my cross bike both have 9 speed shimano mechs coupled with 105 10 speed STIs with a 10 speed 36 tooth rear cassette. The XT I had on my road bike definitely isn’t rapid rise.

I manage to sneek in an additional sleeping pillow but that can’t be left on the bed during the day as it will leave the pillows unsymmetrical.

we got into a massive argument last night because i’d damaged the cushions by sitting on them ( they are for supporting your back). If it was down tome they’d go in the bin.

Our bed has 10 pillows but I’m only allowed to sleep on one of them the rest are for show. Who are they on show to. I have to take them off every night and put them back every morning drives me mad.

I’m selling my Boardman team and sticking with my non-disc Crosslight. The boardmans a great bike but I don’t ride fast enough to notice the difference, I’m now faster up the Cat and Fiddle on my Crosslight after losing some weight and getting fitter than I was on the Boardman (i’m sure I’d be faster still on the Boardman). The crosslight is much more flexible I’m going to keep it for a few years until the Road discs bikes have become established.

I think (hope) I’m getting a thermoball jacket for Christmas. I tried a nano puff down jacket at the weekend in Costco and I find it hard to spend £130 on something a) makes you look like a trainspotter and b) doesn’t work when wet, which is not much us in Macclesfield.

Nice to see some positive comments rather than than the usual that Halfords bikes crap buy a £3000 bike.

I ride Macc Forest nearly every week and a its a long climb to the top especially from Macc. I’ve lost a fair bit of weight and got a lot fitter in the past few months and it made it a lot easier.

If was to make one change, i’d get rid of those tyres not to save weight but your life. I had the same OEM ones on a Boardman and they have zero grip in the wet.

Thanks sound’s like we should stick to the forest track, thanks for the info on the BW.

No mountain skills and assume equipment. A long time ago I got caught on Kinder plateau a few days after heavy snow was OK going up but murder getting down without crampons. I did the three peaks in the summer and I wouldn’t fancy the decent from Whernside if there was Ice or compacted snow. If there has been snow leave it until later in the year.

I live in Macclesfield and ride the roads both around Buxton and Congelton every week I never go on the A54 after Wildboarclough its grim. There are plenty of quiet ways to get to between Buxton and Congleton and back to Manchester, i ride the Cat and Fiddle every week and actually despite its reputation it far safer than some of the “quiet” roads. Last week I was 2 inches away from being killed on the old buxton road mountain biking upto the the cat and fiddle.

I have an old MX16 you can have for virtually nothing. Other wise go for Carrera blast 16inch there are tons on Gumtree or ebay for £30-50. I only switched to Islabike at 20 inch.

    I’m thinking the same currently

    1 commuter
    1 road bike
    1 cross bike
    2 FS
    1 Hard tail

I’m think of going to 1 Hardtail, commuter/baby carrier + crossbike (two sets of wheels/tyres). I’ve just had my old 456 powder coated and built up and I’m going to ride it all winter. If i can’t see any reason to keep it the fs is going. Similarly I’m going to ride my crossbike on the road all winter and if i don’t feel its holding me back that much the road bike is going. The cross bike also offer miles more flexibility. The fact its a little slower than my road bike doesn’t matter when when your my weight and speed.
