If she’s a complete beginner how about some of the loops around Lynn Brenig. Nice and tame much less likely to cause another Singletrack divorce.

This was my bed a few weeks ago, near the shooting cabins in Hayfield. It wasn’t exactly hidden. The thought of someone stealing my bike or stabbing me to death did cross my mind for a few seconds but then I thought your average psycho killer doesn’t pop up for a walk around Kinder at midnight on a weekend. To be honest it was the Curlews and Grouse keeping me awake was the bigger problem.

I quit a year ago except for big running races when it turns me into a jibbering in idiot like Spud at the job interview in trainspotting. Defiantly makes me faster.

Had to stop as I’ve as drinking overcast dozen cups a day.

Here’s the podcast i was listening to its a bit dry but at least it’s not from someone trying to sell you protein powder

    podcast

I don’t think there is any, as you stop rebuilding muscle as soon as start exercising, your body is not going to waste potential calories laying down muscle when that protein could be used as fuel. I was listening to a podcast where the scientist suggested that a very dilute solution of protein might help during ultra endurance events to reduce muscle damage but i don’t think its much use for mortals.

I’d stick to carbs or fats if you need them riding and protein after but again unlike carbs it doesn’t need to be straight after.

I camped by the shooting cabin in Hayfield. It was a long day. I did Macc to Hayfield for tea and then the Pennine Bridleway to Peak Forest and slept by Oxlow Rake on Friday. Then did the rest of the Lord of the loops plus a bit of the Beast which was interesting with camping gear.

The original plan was to sleep in the woods at Langsett but I got there so early I pushed on got to Hayfield at 8pm after setting off at 6.15am. Spent the night in the Sportsman and wondered up at 11pm to find the spot as recommended by one of the locals.

I was going to ride home via the Goyt but i was destroyed so settle for Latern Pike and Lyme Park.

This was the only weekend I could do this until Autumn massively lucked out with the weather.

Having disappeared upto my waste twice running up there a few months a ago. I’d hardly describe the tiny bit of mud that’s left now as a megabog.

Its the best condition I’ve every seen it and for the first time got it rather than it be a grind despite lugging around 50lb of bike and bikepacking gear.

Here’s my go pro footage from Saturday it’s not very exciting but you get a sense how dry it is from about 5 minutes in.

It was a third the price because there was no demand because kids were in school it’s the market price and your not getting shafted if you don’t go, no one is holding a gun against your head to go on a foriegn holiday. It’s no different to getting the train to London at 7am £250 or 10am £37.

My kids have have been collectively in School for coming up for 10 years and they’ve missed 3 days between them. That’s about a 99.7% attendance does that mean we’ve booked up enough brownie points for a massive cheapo holiday. No it doesn’t!

Your kids and other people kids education is a privilege that for one a lot of people in the world would die for and I pay a fortune in tax to fund.

If you can’t afford your holiday in the school holidays then you can’t afford it whether that’s a week in Magaluf or a week in Val d’isere. I can’t get over this sense of entitlement that people have that they right to the holiday they want or their kids deserve a holiday after studying for Stats. We were so poor when i was a kid didn’t have a single holiday full stop (not in the UK or abroad) by the sounds of it some of you would call the NSPCC as it’s child abuse not to give your children a holiday abroad or a trip to Disneyland. Two of the thing I hate in modern society, wanting everything now snd mollycoddling kids.

I’m taking my kids to a big wood north of Birmingham for the Easter Holidays as that’s all I can afford at the moment. I’m sure they’ll have a great time on their bikes, playing in the woods and avoiding the doggers.

Manchester went well 10 minutes off my PB at 3.28, here’s my pacing I tried really hard to be consistent managed to stay within 5% of both my average and target pace of 8 min/miles. All I can recommend is you decide on a time and try and stick to a steady pace to achieve that. You’ll feel fresh at the beginning and you’ll be tempted to go out to fast really try not to as it will hurt at the end. Captain how did you get on ?

Good running. The key with the marathon is the consistency of pace/effort. If you go out too quick you’ll have a really unpleasant last 6-8 miles. I deliberately did a 21 mile long run a few weeks ago where I ran the first 13 miles at 1/2 marathon pace PB pace. The next 8 miles was hell but I wanted to know my limits to stop myself getting carried away on the day.

Don’t get carried away by all the people rushing off at the beginning of the race if you get your pacing right you’ll be running past them in the second half of the race, which is a great feeling.

If you’ve done so already, download the Marathon Talk podcast from this week onwards as they’ll be taking people through race strategies up until the Marathon.

I’ve got Manchester on Sunday and I’m starting to get nervous, I want to run 7 1/2 minutes faster than last year to get under 3 1/2 hours. Managed 10 miles at 7.30min/mile last Friday on the back of a 10 miler the day before, which 30 sec/mile faster than Marathon pace and i’ve lots of long runs so should be OK.

I’ve used GT-2000 in it’s various guises for 18 years, always buy last seasons for 1/2 price usually pick them up for £55-60. Only didn’t get on with one-years version about 15 years ago.

I tend to wear the upper fabric out on my asics trainers before the cushioning goes but I do run mostly off road but not at 69km

I’ve got Manchester Marathon next week managed to pull a muscle in my back this morning hopefully it’s just a twinge.

Often the cheapest option on Amazon has stupid postage when you add it on it more expensive than the ones with free postage.

Prime or Free is the way to go.

I first got into a pool 11 months ago and like you I could only manage a few lengths without being totally exhausted despite been pretty fit.

I got a couple of half hour lessons focusing in on slowing down my kick, constanly breathing outwater and little bit on hand placement.

I was good enough to get me through a sprint tri and then progress to a 1.9Km in a half iron man.

But I wasn’t really progressing so I went on a TI day workshop a few weeks ago. I tried to put everything in place at once and I sank.

This week I focussed on head position and saw some gains for the first time in months. I’m not sure the workshop was worth it but I’d definitely recommend getting some coaching or going to local masters class. In my area they cost the same as normal swimming session but you get some coaching thrown in

I was doing the Macc Half Marathon about ten years ago and as we were running through Prestbury (Imagine a chunk of Surrey transported 200 miles north) we ran passed Robbie Savages drive blocking him and Brad Friedel in his Ferrari as they were on their way to play for Blackburn. Made me smile, they didn’t seem too annoyed probably happy to get another 15 minutes listening to Phil Collins.

I’ve been running a lot of fell this winter, and I don’t think you need Walshes as you probably be running on half decent paths something like Innov8 x-talons would be more suitable. Theres good deals on Innov8 on sports pursuit at the moment.

Someone recommended these[/url] on my fell running forum

The wife always wanted three i wasn’t convinced. We’d setback time limit of 40, I’d got my head round it wasn’t going to happen but it did.

Tough at first especially as we were just getting to the age we could do fun things with the other two.

This made worse as he has been the hardest of the three. I’ll struggled to bond with him it was easier to focus on the other two.

But he’s now just 5 and sat he beside me and absolutely adore him. He’s mellowed and hes turned into a lovely little boy.

Looking forward to taking him out riding in the morning.

Exercise is important for you well being don’t give it up. Road biking is cheap as you don’t have the maintenance costs. Get a new one from Decathlon or a used bargain of the classifieds. Running is even cheaper.

I manage to train for quiet lot and spend loads of time with the kids.

I just don’t watch TV or sleep much.

I was testing out a breakfast for bikepacking trip in a few weeks Oats, Powdered milk, desiccated coconut and a sugar loved it. Fat has more calories than carbs per gram so add a few high fat foods like nuts rather than all carbs.

You probably should be eating protein and carbs today to help your muscles recover from the 70 miles ride. Then I wouldn’t worry too much for the rest of the week, then start eating excess carbs on Friday plain rice or oats is what I use without too much fat or protein at the same time.

Listening to an Ulatra running podcast yesterday, that was talking about Mustard and pickle juice as a cramp cure they reckoned it was likely to be placebo effect, though very new research suggests that it could be that strong taste may prvent cramp. They had the US armies top expert on Hydration on he reckoned that cramp may be caused my nerve signalling in fatigued muscles rather than low salt or dehydration.

Didn’t come up with any suggestions how to prevent it other than mustard or pickle juice.

We had to throw him out of the local one night a few years ago when he was completely w@#$kered and getting a bit gobby. No worse than I’d been at the same age.

He’s always really friendly when meet him on his bike on the canal towpath. I’m not sure you get the same from some of the top guys in other sports.
