@johndrummer thanks, the rigging gets easier once you start. I like your ship, I’ve never attempted a sailing ship, I quite fancy having a go at one.

    @esselgruntfuttock
that F4J is nice, I’m halfway through a Revell/Monogram F105D and the detail is better than I expected once I cut all the flash off!

This is the rest of my stuff that has put in an appearance in the past. The Albatros is next to my current F105D build to show the size comparison.

The thread should have been called ‘Humbrol-bragging’.

    Bravo! 😂

I really like the Dora, I’ve got one in my ‘to do’ pile and looking at that one makes me want to start it!

    Eduard 1/48 Albatros DV.

The kit was 25 years old and was a swine to make, I’m glad I persevered though as I’m quite pleased with it now. The kit came with a white metal engine, 2 sheets of photo-etch, and a clear sheet with a screen and a parts for the instruments. The only thing I added was EZ-Line for the rigging, a real wooden prop (home made), and some wire for the engine to radiator pipe. It was brush painted with Vallejo Model colour, with a final coat of Alclad matt clear. It’s a very small aircraft compared to my other 1/48 models!

Yep, finished my Albatross DV yesterday and just got to take a couple of pics now. I need to get outside and take them but it’s too windy here (it’s always windy in the fens!), finding somewhere bright enough indoors is hard.

Good job on that hut, I like it!

I really like the Mr Surfacer primer, especially the 1200 and the 1500, I find that it doesn’t obscure any details. It sprays well, especially when well thinned with the levelling thinner.

Just paid 15.99 for it in my local model shop, bloody tin is half empty! The shop is doing phone orders and you pick it up at a specified time.

What hurt more is that I also bought a Mr Surfacer 1500 black primer aerosol, £10.50!!!
I’m going to stick with Halfords primer from now on.

Cheers JD, I’ll give it a try then. Luckily I’ve got two decent model shops about 12 miles either side of me so I’ll see if they do it before I go online.

That putty looks good, I might buy some. Is it reusable or is it only good for one model?

We’re thinking of giving our 7 year old a tablet for Christmas

Try Valium, it’ll be a nice quiet Christmas!

Why do I do this to myself?
Making a kit that isn’t bringing me any joy and I decide to carve a wooden propeller from sheets of veneer, it looks good with the spinner dry fitted (forgot to take a pic of that).
Had a disaster with the decals as well tonight, I think I should have varnished them first as they fell apart when I soaked them.

I’m in, I’ll try and finish my Albatross for it but if I can’t it’ll be one of those that you’ve seen before. How do you lot manage to do so many, I have trouble doing one at a time!

Any tips for taking decent pics of them with a camera phone?

Then put the kit on a hard surface and **** it with a cast iron pan.

    Sounds like a plan!

Tesco value kitchen cleaner is supposed to be good for stripping paint off, not tried it myself though.

@johndrummer that Corsair is going to take some saving, I feel your pain!
I usually cut Tamiya tape into thin strips (so they go round corners) for the edges, then fill the middle bit with low tac painters masking tape. Tesa pink is my weapon of choice at the moment, it’s about 7 quid a roll but lasts ages and cuts well.

    @garage-dweller
look for a cheap compressor on Facebook marketplace, there’s usually a fair amount on there, then buy a couple of 15 quid airbrushes off ebay to practise with. When you start spraying thin your paint more that you think, most people have it too thick to start with and it splatters everywhere.

I’m still fighting the Albatross, I nearly put it on the floor and stamped on it tonight! I superglued the wing struts on backwards and had to cut them off, then glued them on backwards again! 😂
I haven’t really enjoyed this one but I’m going to finish it even though its getting right on my tits now. I couldn’t be bothered to airbrush it and just brush painted it, it didn’t turn out to bad, Vallejo is great for that.

For our second dog we’re just putting the money that we paid in insurance straight into a separate savings account…

No doubt plenty of people will say this is crazy for various reasons.

This is what we do, £60 a month for two dogs and a cat.

We’ve been doing this for 14 years now, I got fed up with the insurance company (Directline) ramping up the premiums as the dogs got older. It is a risk at first as you may get a large bill without having saved enough to cover it, but my thinking was that I’d pay it on a credit card, then do a balance transfer to another one with an interest free period and pay it off. So far it’s worked out OK, had a few things to pay out for but we’re still in credit. Pretty much how insurance company’s work!

I’m not keen on anything with rigging so biplanes, WWI monoplanes & sailing ships are off my radar for now

I’m not a fan of those kits you listed but I’m going through a bit of a masochistic phase at the moment, I bought the 1/48 Airfix Walrus last week!

@johndrummer that mobile Sam system looks a beast, do you keep all of your completed kits or just the best ones, I’m running out of space.
I’m not going to pull the trigger on that Italeri F-4E, I’m going to hang on for the Zoukei Mura one that’s due out soon. The price is a killer though!

While I’m waiting for the Phantom I’ve resurrected a kit I started in 1995, the Eduard 1/48 Albatross DV. Its an absolute dog of a kit, the difference between this and their 109 I’ve just done is light years apart! I’m determined to finish it despite hating it, I’ll fight it to the end. It didn’t help that I decided to anneal the etched set in it with a blowtorch as I thought it would be quick, it certainly destroyed most of it quick and I had to buy another set (a different one though). The story so far…

Hasegawa A-7D Corsair II to paint in 1/48 When the ‘nam paints arrive

Nice, I’ve got a 1/48 F105 to do in SEA scheme. I keep putting it off though as its bloody enormous, especially next to the WWI Albatross I’ve just restarted!

I’m after an F4E to do in Israeli colours if anyone sees one?

Undercarriage fairings on the wrong legs?

No, looks like I got away with it!

It’s s the decal on the L/H side, the ’16’. It looked great after a matt clear coat of Alclad II and I was really happy with it. I like to finish off with a dusting of ground pastels to blend everything together, but for some reason it made the decal carrier film show up, just on that one though. It was invisible after the clear coat, I should’ve stopped there! 😭

Is it supposed to have the machine gun barrels poking through the cowls?

No, the guns are there but very small. The left one sticks out slightly but the right one is just inside the hole, the gun mountings are staggered to enable them to fit under the cowling.

yeah, pretty much. Turret needs work, fuel tanks need work too

@johndrummer that truck is great, I really like the weathering on it! The T34 looks like you lost interest in it and rushed the weathering stage? When I do that I leave it and go back to it after a couple of months doing other kits, I go back to it with fresh eyes.

I finished my Me109 G-4 in two weeks, I don’t think I’ve completed one that quick since I was a kid. I’m quite happy with it apart from one thing that went wrong, if nobody notices it then I’ll have gotten away with it! 🤔

@cchris2lou I’ve not ridden there, I used to ride a bit further over around Plaxtol or Meopham. Those nasty steep Kent hills used to scare me to death. Never go south of the river! :-D

I forgot about Mardyke, that’s where I ued to live as well😂

I remember when they first built it and they were trying to get members, yep, told no shorts! Only played there a couple of times.

Top Meadow in Nth Ockendon is worth a thrash around, bottom end gets a bit wet in winter though.

… And Basildon, Cranham, Belhus Park, Hartwood, Orsett, Dunton Hills. I like Lullingstone over in Kent best, no elitist crap on that course.

@boombang I used to play Sth Essex courses!

I liked playing golf but I got fed up with the archaic dress rules, I haven’t played for about 5 years now and miss it.
I like to wear shorts when playing but I got turned away from so many courses that I got fed up with it. The last straw for me was when I was walking to the first tee at a course that I had to wear long trousers to play, and the club pro ran out of the shop and was shouting at me to tuck my shirt in to my trousers. I walked back to the car park and that was it. It’s that middle class pseudo public school atmosphere that I can’t stand, even on some of the shabbier courses. Shame really as where I now live there is an interesting course over the road (9 holes built on top of an old Victorian dock) that I’d like to play, it’s full of old retired people though so I can’t see the attitude being any different. I think they’re trying to sign up new members as well.

    Something like this?

    https://www.smallscalelights.co.uk/

Led’s aren’t difficult to use from scratch and are cheap components. You’ll need a battery holder (2032 battery?) wire, led’s, and resistors.
The only issue with making it yourself is the resistor value, but there’s plenty of info on the net.

Years ago before led lights on vehicles were a thing I made a LED rear light for a lambretta, a Maplins (I miss Maplins) boffin worked out the resistor value for me and I bodged the rest. If you can solder a wire it should be fairly simple.

I did the same with the upper sand colour, totally obliterated the shading. The lower blue colour turned out really well but its not that clear in the pic.
Next time I’m going to try it with a darkened version of the topcoat instead of the rlm66 (black grey) I used this time.

I like ‘The Sweeney’ , I think it still stands up well considering it was made nearly 50 years ago, ‘The Professionals’ is another story though, what a load of old pony!

I’ve just watched ‘Fear City’ on Netflix, 3 parter about an FBI case against the mafia. Its very good, just like Goodfellas.

He’s supposed to be puking up after a tough day!

I bought an Eduard 1/48 Me109 G-4 profi pack last Saturday and got straight into it, I’m halfway through painting it at the moment. This has got to be some sort of a record for me as a quick build is usually 6 months! It’s a great kit as it just falls together, this would be really good for someone who is getting back to modelling as it has no vices whatsoever.

Earlier today I put a coat of rlm78 blue over some preshading, I feel like I’m actually getting somewhere with this technique now. I tried using some Mr Hobby acrylic thinned with their Levelling Thinner, I thinned it much more than I usually thin paint and it went on really well, I’m going to use this a lot more from now on.

After what seemed like ages I’ve finally finished (I think) my Bronco Stug III ausf E. The figures have all been modified to the poses that I wanted from a Miniart artillery crew, I’m enjoying doing figures more and more lately! The scene is supposed to be just after a summer battle in 1941 in Russia.

I’ve just bought a Huawei P30 from 4gadgets (after a recommendation on here). It’s a nice phone but it was 50 quid over your budget, the camera is very good though. 4gadgets have a £20 off promotion until the weekend.

Thanks jeffl. I can fit solid wood and normal laminate worktops no problem, I’ve got the jig for a masons mitre joint and have cut a fair few including the biscuits. I need to know if there’s anything special about solid laminate.
