Daft question but do Mavic hubs still need the little 1.7mm freehub spacer inboard of the cassette? Something to do with Campag compatibility IIRC.

I forgot to put mine back on after changing cassette a little while back and it resulted in exactly what you describe.

Fixed (with one of those disc hub adaptors) with a disc up front will probably be the next evolution of my 1×1… I seem to change it completely every 6 months or so. Surlys are like Lego for (semi) grownups.

BB height is obviously higher in the above setup but I’ve not noticed it affecting the handling at all – if anything it’s an advantage around here (Dartmoor) with all the roots and granite.

FWIW – Heres some pics of my 1×1 with 29er rims. It’s currently running ‘cross tyres on MTB rims but I’ve had 29 x 2 Bontys in there without any problems in the past… should give you some idea of clearances.

    I have a spare 1X1, I hadn’t thought of 29ing that, although i use V brakes, would that work?

Ah I run disks on mine so that wasn’t an issue for me… Mavic and Xtracycle used to do a 700C adaptor kit for 26″ frames but you might struggle to track them down. Paul Moto brakes can also be adjusted to do the job but they are very spendy… probably cheaper to get some new wheels!

Were you planning on running Vs on your new bike then? If so that’s going to limit the choice a bit further. Stooge is disc only isn’t it? In fact a Surly may be the only option if you want to keep on using Vs.

Have you posted a wanted ad on here for a KM? That’s how I got mine. Love it.

I also have an older style 1×1, which is similarly excellent – if anything it handles better than the KM – not as solid feeling but more nimble and will take a modestly shod 29er wheel without screwing the handling – there is bags of clearance in the back, OK at the front but could always upgrade the fork at a later date.

I only mention that as there are some good deals on 1×1 F&F at Triton at the moment (£280).

…although looking at that Stooge, I think if I was looking now, it would also be high on my list!

I fitted one of these recently based on generally good feedback on amazon – no problems so far. Battery life and performance both back to normal.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00JUNYETG/ref=pe_385721_51767431_TE_dp_1

    Very easy to fit too.

As above, on a domestic tariff your ISP will dynamically allocate you an IP but it would typically be within a defined range.

Just wondering – do you work from home at all and use VPN to connect in to your work network?

If so then depending on whether or not all traffic is routed over your work VPN you may present a different public IP (your work’s ISP’s) when connected to VPN than you would when connecting directly via your ISP.

That will be fine without a tensioner. You just need to size the chain properly so you have some room to bring the wheel back in the dropouts to adjust for chain stretch.

I ran a frame like that with normal QRs, but you could go for allen key skewers or solid axle and track nuts for extra security.

You don’t need SS specific cranks either – just remove the inner rings from normal crankset.

EDIT – as far as the cassette is concerned, if it’s a freehub then you just need a spacer kit and cog – one with a variety of spacers is good to get the right chainline.

    http://www.tritoncycles.co.uk/components-c9/hub-spares-skewers-c122/dmr-single-speed-spacer-kit-p9303/s22634?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=dmr-single-speed-spacer-kit-dmr-ssh-1sp-kit&utm_campaign=product%2Blisting%2Bads&gclid=CPr-47a1gsQCFTPKtAodoGYAPQ

If it’s a screw on freewheel then you need a screw on cog.

I grew up on a farm so started driving on the the tracks and fields from about 12, always inheriting my dad’s cast-off bangers when they inevitably failed their MOT.

My dad LOVED Cortinas, so they featured a lot. He drove one as a taxi for a while which was painted like the car from Starsky and Hutch, complete with massive bendy aerial.

The first of these was a rusty white Mk III with a black vinyl roof. Like this one, but with rust holes in the floor you could fall through.

I virtually broke that one in two after a low speed impact into a dry stone wall with 5 mates in it.

Later he passed on a yellow Mk III Ghia estate – like this one:

…but with a brown vinyl roof (what was it with Vinyl in the 70s?). It was similarly afflicted with rust and looked gopping – like driving around in an over-ripe banana. But I loved it.

I almost rolled that one on the beach. Later swapped it with a mate for a Morris Minor!

We later had a Mk IV Ghia in metallic brown which was a keeper. Loved that car.

I’ve used Ebay the last 2 times I’ve sold a car (Mark IV Golf about 4 years back and then, a a couple of weeks ago, our poorly Skoda Octavia Scout).

Both times I’ve started the bidding at the absolute minimum I’d want to accept and set a Buy it Now for a little above the book price from Parkers. In both cases the cars have gone for over the BIN price – the last one was without a working engine so was advertised for spares or repair and I still got a very decent price for it (only about £500 less than I would have got on a main dealer trade-in with it in full working order).

One thing I would recommend if you go down that route (apart from being COMPLETELY honest in the listing) is state in the listing that you are not interested in offers and don’t stick your mobile number in the listing (you’ll get plagued with stupid offers by text) – ask people to contact you via Ebay and don’t be tempted to accept offers outside the site – you’ll almost certainly get a better price from letting it run and are covered by their standard protection terms.

Webuyanycar is useful if you want a quick hassle-free sale but you will lose £££s – my experience is they’ll offer you less than trade in a lot of cases – cheekily if you don’t commit straight away you get a follow up email a week later telling you your car has miraculously increased in value!

If you don’t have a Parkers book or login then you get get a reasonably accurate and free valuation here: http://www.motoring.co.uk/

Picked up a second hand pair which I’ve had mine on my main bike for a good while – it’s a rigid Surly Karate Monkey. I’m 100kg and the bike has had a proper battering over Dartmoor granite in that time without any problems. They are the 25.4mm version and I don’t notice any flex at all.

I don’t doubt that some of them have broken. Stuff does that sometimes. If you look at any bar I’m sure you’ll find some examples of that if you look hard enough but it’s a bit of a stretch to infer that they “have a reputation for failing” when the evidence of most people who actually use them seems to be contrary to that.

if the emails had been spoofed though an open relay then they wouldn’t be showing up in his sent items folder.

True – but I don’t think the OP said they were in his sent items – just that he became aware his hotmail had (apparently) sent them.

Normally the first sign you get of this is loads of out of office auto replies / NDRs from spurious addresses. I’d assumed it was the same in this case.

As purplyeti says, if the messages are in sent items then it is a local infection.

+1 for Malwarebytes as a supplement to AV scan.

but then I discovered that my Hotmail had sent hundreds of emails to my contacts and lots of others I dont know with a variety of tempting subjects like “You’ll never believe this…” and so on.

There is a possibility that you haven’t been hacked – just that spammers have used your email address on email they’ve sent. It’s ridiculously easy to send an email and make it appears like it came from someone else and near impossible to prevent this. This does not necessarily mean your computer or hotmail account has been compromised – more likely that someone with your email address in their address list has been infected.

The coastal bits of Cornwall (particularly North Coast) aren’t that well served by bridleways but given I live on NE Dartmoor and am only an hours drive from the North Cornwall coast, and Cardinham is just down the road there is plenty of riding within striking distance if you don’t mind a bit of a drive… In my experience cheeky riding is a bit more tolerated generally in Kernow, especially if it’s early morning / evening

Some good recommendations above. Polzeath is a good holiday base and has a great beach which is a safe choice for surfing – lovely walks on the coast path out to Pentire Point and beyond too, but it does get rammed during the holidays.

Our favourite beaches on the North Coast are Trebarwith Strand, Crackington Haven and Widemouth.

Further West, St Ives is lovely, with loads going on and great beaches. Sennen Cove is stunning – somewhere like St Just is central for that area and may be a good base if you want to avoid the crowds and also get some riding in – there are a few routes (some cheeky) around the Penwith peninsular.

St Agnes area also recommended – some great beaches nearby and handy for the Mineral Tramway which runs from coast to Coast from Portreath to Devoran and apparently has some off-piste stuff to explore in the old workings.

Some lovely spots on the Lizard (Kynance is gorgeous), and bits of it can get EPIC surf, but conditions can be a little inconsistent at the intermediate / beginner friendly beaches.

Have a look here for cottages: http://www.helpfulholidays.com/

£18k fully spec’d when prices start at £9.5k. It must come pretty naked as standard. £18k would get you a lot of second hand Jap/German 4×4 and a new bike for the roof.

It does – there isn’t even a radio in the base model. The variant we are looking at would come in at 16.5K with the options we want and 4×4. That’s with the extra £850 for a 7 year warranty too.

We’ve looked at this quite closely. For similar money you’re looking at 3 years plus (out of warranty) or high mileage in small 4x4s from other manufacturers other than the ones I mentioned in the OP. You can pick up bigger 4x4s for less but they’re £££s to run.

Iolo – from what I understand, current stock is now from the Romanian plant, but that is something I’ll be checking.

John Drummer – also considered the Kuga. We had one on hire last time we were in Scotland and liked it but the boot is a bit on the small side for us.

Thanks for advice all – will report back from the test drive.

Ours does the same occasionally but less and less each week – as above it’s mainly because something has spooked him. I realised that ours is scared of (in no particular order):

    Wheelie bins
The noise of extractor fans / central heating outlets
    Pedestrian crossings

He was also spooked by car lights when it was dark but seems OK with them now.

That said, it’s not always because he’s scared. He also stops at any dark estate car (because he thinks it ours and he needs to get into it) and at the cafe we take him to occasionally – even at 6am when it’s closed (because he knows the owner gives him a treat) – they’re not daft!

I’ve a regular route I walk him on before work and he tends to stop at exactly the same points, all of which involve one of the above!

I’ve been coaxing him to move with treats and then give him lots of fuss when he is actually moving. Seems to be working.

What about this with a few upgrades (hubs and frame are disk ready):

Fits the low maintenance criteria, pretty light and well within budget.

They’re great if set up properly. Full routing and compressionless outers make a big difference. Also work best with Avid Speed dial levers.

I have them on both my bikes as I got fed up with bleeding hydros.

Couple of good how to guides on t’internet:

If you don’t get on with them I’m sure you’ll find a ready market of buyers to take them off your hands!

You have non-native plants growing in the corner of the garden where you hose the bike down.

You have a semi-permanent chainring tattoo on right calf

Your shins are 90% scar tissue

When out on a walk, you can identify tyre tracks by manufacturer and model

LOL – in desperation I had actually considered that option if truth be told.

If the Skype screen sharing option worked on the Hudl then that would at least be a start!

Bless her she’s giving it a go but it’s often basic stuff like entering the wrong passwords and accidentally swiping emails into her archive that she struggles with.

She only realised last week that she could use the keyboard in Google. She’d been doing all her web searches by talking to it previously and was getting increasingly (and vocally) frustrated with it…which had predictable consequences in terms of search results.

I drive 2 for work (different jobs). First is a a tarted up 1989 90 with a retrofitted Mitsubishi engine and stupid big wheels with A/Ts fitted, the other a 2002 crewcab 130 with a big tank of water in the back.

The first one looks great but is truly horrible to drive. Noisy, smelly, horrible clutch action and wallowy as a marshmallow hippo, it’s like driving a canal boat and almost as damp inside.

Weirdly the 130 I actually really enjoy driving. It’s on standard wheels which I guess helps.

I still want one of my own despite all the horror stories. I’d go for a farmer spec utility crew cab.

We did get a full refund from the breeder but covered the vets bills ourselves Not a professional outfit – just a farming family whose own dog had had pups, they were as distraught as us at losing 2 of their pups. We were just very unlucky – really wouldn’t want it to put anyone off!

We got a Springador pup at 8 weeks back in November. Unfortunately he became really ill with a bacterial infection within a couple of days of coming to us and we had to have him put to sleep. Desperately sad time. We found out subsequently that the same thing had happened to another pup from the same litter – it was Leptospirosis which they had obviously picked up before they came to us. It was a horribly distressing thing to go through but we also ended up with a huge vets bill as it all happened within the 2 week no claim period at the start of the policy.

After that experience I’d always go for an older pup and preferably one which has already has it’s vacs.

The good news is that we now have Lucas who came to us at 12 weeks fully vaccinated and well socialized.

He’s a Springador too and he’s a cracking little dog (apologies for second pup pic of the day!):

Our springador puppy was originally named Derek by his breeders which I thought was a great name but was sadly overruled. He’s now called Lucas.

Colin is quality. Worth following the Scilly Isles Police facebook page for his daily update from the front line of policing.

I particularly like PC Mowgli’s updates.

He just sits on the front desk and watches the people who accompany us to the police station. Basically if PC Mowgli sees you and his left ear waggles you are guilty of something or other. I don’t know how he does it but he is 100% accurate. The rest of us mere mortals have to do stuff like gather evidence, statements and interview. His comprehensive range of facial expressions would teach Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson of the Twilight series a trick or two to boot.
He can see you through this Facebook portal. Let us know if you see his ear twitch or not. Two twitches and Santa may not even be coming.

Food Unwrapped last night had a section on energy drinks. Basic upshot was that any performance gain was purely down to the caffeine and sugar in most energy drinks so I would infer that coke would be no better or worse than any other “sports” drink.

Drinking coke to prevent stomach upsets after surfing in dodgy water is an old surfer’s remedy which I subscribed to for a while but I now understand that it’s complete bobbins.

A friend now has this one – not one of your old rides is it? There cannot be too many 110/130’s fire engines around….

As far as I know ours is the only one in DSFRS. All the other 4x4s here are Rangers or Hi Luxes. It’s been around the houses a bit. Was originally the specialist rescue vehicle for North Devon. I’d struggle to call it a fire engine but it does have a water tank and foam / fogging unit in the back.

Winter rated tyres all around here. The main pump has snow chains but they’re only fitted if is really bad. Have snow socks for the co-responder van but we also have the venerable beast below which can take over from the van in really dodgy weather.

Probably not the solution you’re looking for and if you’ve already changed the number then it’s probably too late but if they’re not withholding the number would getting a phone with a caller display help? At least that way you can not choose not to answer calls from the dodgy number, or in fact any number you don’t recognise.

My flatmate when I lived in Bristol years ago used to work in a casino. At his Secret Santa the usual tat, choccies and wine did the rounds. When he opened his, it was a huge vibrating manhood extension, complete with an external battery pack, which, I kid you not, took 6 DD batteries (although to be frank, it was so big, it looked like it should be running on diesel).

To this day he has no clue who gave it to him.

Worryingly, another of our flatmates used to regularly fire this thing up (not erm…whilst connected to it, I hasten to add) and let it wander around the dinner table under it’s own power…he took particular delight in doing this when the original recipient had his girlfriend visiting.

The thing was terrifying – like something out of a Cronenberg movie – thankfully it later got dismantled one drunken evening (to see how it worked, you understand) and the electric motor saw sterling service powering an improvised disco ball at the following year’s New Year’s party.

I normally do the Peck Farm climb… Or try to – as above, very, very rarely clear it. Again it’s that loose section that always has me off.

If riding from home I generally come in from North Bovey on the byway via Dickford Bridge / Barnecourt.

If coming in from Manaton you could come in to North Bovey over Easdon – there is a bit of singletrack through the woods above Aller which is quite entertaining – avoid in the wet though. Alternative is to come down the lane past Langstone.

I love the Nutcracker, particularly the fast open bit in the top section. Bottom bit is interesting on a rigid 29er!
