I recall watching the first Potter film at the cinema and seeing a trailer for Fellowship beforehand. I then sat through the entire film hating it because it wasn’t LOTR. That sort of sums it up (although I watched Potter again and subsequently rather enjoyed it).

I learned to snowboard in 1991 when skis were awkward, narrow and straight (much like most skiers of the time). Modern skis make learning much easier so there’s not really much difference anymore. I grew up surfing so it made more sense too.

I learned (taught myself) to ski during a particularly snow-starved season and carried on skiing instead of snowboarding the following season, as it allows more control and more speed. It also meant not cocking about with snowshoes when I was off-piste. I also prefer the over-tweaked style of grabs on skis.

Ignore people who tell you one is better than the other. Just have a think about whether you’re more comfortable going sideways or forward-facing.

what we need to do is get organised and buy the land ourselves thus giving us more control over the areas we wish to enjoy

I can’t afford to buy a house, so I’m never going to be able to buy a forest. Besides, why should I buy something that already belongs to the public, and therefore me?

i think my main problem was leaning too far forwards a lot of the time, rather than leaning back.

No! You’ll probably find it’s the other way around. My experience of teaching people to snowboard is that they never leaned forward as much as they believed they were. Leaning forward engages the full length of the rail and keeps your skis under control. Leaning back sends you off and onto your arse.

Brief advice when learning to ski: your shins should always be touching your boots.

My experience with snowsports is that speed is your friend.

Just relax, learn to turn, stop and traverse properly, and speed will come with confidence in your skills.

The new carbon Cannondale is very pretty and light too. Prepare to take out a new mortgage to afford one though.

I ride a giant, partly because they come in giant sizes.

True fact: the headtube on my XL trance is visible from space.

Used to be true, but they’ve stopped importing XL versions of most models. They’re certainly not the bargain brand that they were a few years ago either

I’ve had a few and never been disappointed.

The cost of smoking-related disease to the NHS is less than the revenue smoking creates per year by several billion. However, as mentioned, there is a bigger picture than just healthcare. The cost on our society has been greater than the revenue from smoking since 2003. It’s estimated to have cost the UK ~£3.5billion in 2009.

I’m afraid I don’t have references for this as I’m not at work.

I suppose it’s time I involved myself in this thread.

Some information, reflecting on posts thus far:

The difference between hand-rolled tobacco and tailor-made fags is insignificant (in terms of health and addictive qualities). Both are heavily treated with a large number of chemicals to increase the addictive action, thus making tobacco companies more money. Hand-rolled is certainly not a safer option.

Taxation from tobacco sales has not equalled it’s cost on our society since 2003. It cost the UK ~£3.5 Billion in 2009.

Is the gum more addictive than fags? No, but people do occasionally become addicted (although very rarely). Smoking delivers a large bolus of tobacco at a very fast rate. This is one of the reasons fags are so addictive. Tobacco companies treat their products specifically to speed this process up.

It should be pointed out that Nicotine, in the doses people receive through smoking or NRT use, is mostly harmless. It’s all the other crap in tobacco smoke that does the damage.

If your GP tells you that 5-a-day isn’t bad, he/she is misinformed. 1-a-day will, on average, double your risk of CHD.

Healthcare professionals smoking doesn’t validate it. My subjective opinion on this is that it simply highlights the power of smoking addiction on people, despite how well-informed they are of the consequences.

All kinds of people will tell you how to stop smoking. I’ll always state that smoking is an individual action. The basics of physiology are the same, but the psychological complexities differ for everybody. There’s no better or worse method, nor any better or worse type of pharmacotherapy. It’s all about what’s right for that individual.

I’d certainly agree that people won’t stop for good until they really want to, and adverts banging on about COPD/CHD/cancer won’t really make too much difference until it has a personal influence on that individual (e.g. Grandad has a stroke). Personally, I feel a lot of the messages about smoking cessation that the DH deliver are wrong. Instead of trying to make people feel bad about smoking, I’d prefer to let people feel good about considering stopping smoking.

    That’ll do.

I’d be surprised if you’ll be able to fit anything bigger than 25mm tyres in there. You won’t be able to bodge it, so don’t try.

I’d strip it (as the parts are relatively new) and sell the frame, fork and brakes. Then buy a cross frame and fork and some cantis.

    GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING:

I’m having my first child in March. It’s going to be a boy and I’ve bought it a fleece robot, rather than a teddy bear (I like robots).

My back is better and I did quite well in the cyclocross on Sunday.

I like my job and have been informed that it’s unlikely the government will sack me.

It’s December next week. This means it’s nearly Christmas. I noticed a package recently delivered to my wife had a Morvelo stamp on it. This means I’ll get a present I like.

I’m moving closer to the beach on Saturday. Pre-work surfs will be much easier from then-on.

It’s November. Yes, it’s dark and cold. How much fun is night-riding though? Took my mate on his first night session recently and his grin was infectious.

    😀

They’re a folding bead too, so a proper bargain. I’m thinking of getting an extra pair for when they wear out.

Does anyone have any experience of the Kenda Kross Supreme? I’m looking for something aggressive for racing and they look like they’ll do the job. Certainly better than the Speed Kings I used yesterday. Skidspintastic.

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t it mean that we’re more likely to make money by continuing to export there, plus a nice bung in the shape of interest on the loan?

Awful at this time of year, but CRC are selling Small Block Eights at a tenner each. I’ve bought two for early season next year and left them in the garage.

Back to the original post, this isn’t any kind of special deal. It’s all part of the NHS stop smoking service. There are thousands of points-of-access to this service all over the UK.

I help support the NHS through the tax I pay on my ciggies.

Just to inform, this hasn’t been the case since 2003.

From a different perspective to sales, they are all robbing bastards when it comes to rental.

Disgusting charges for credit checks (my mate recently got charged nearly £400 for herself and her 18 year-old daughter), especially when you can get the same checks online for about a tenner. Further agent fees, admin charges and arrangement fees. All with no refund if you’re declined. I’m informed they offer nothing to landlords other than a 20% fee to manage the money.

My recent experience, having dealt with several this week, is one of a general level of poor manners too. I’m not their bloody mate.

Managed to secure a house through a private landlord yesterday. Saved me about £550 in bullshit fees.
