20 minutes i reckon, enough to stretch the legs, realistically an hour each day would be difficult i reckon

120mm at the back and 140mm up front is where its at

If i was after a bike i reckon i’d go for a Gary Fisher Roscoe, Good suspension design and ABP so no brake jack. Fox Drcv shock is also excellent. Gets very good reviews

    Stupid , Useless answer

the hog mount was to stop the hub coming out under braking (easily avoidable by other means) and must in fact inhibit mounting of a front rack.

I’d guess it’s to make it look more acceptable.

    Useful answer

    Fox Floats – £400
    Hope wheels – £250
    SLX cranks – £100
Rear XT Front slx mech – £80
    SLX Shifters – £60
    Elixir 5 brakes – £200
    Good Maxxis tyres – £50
    Cassette and chain – £40
    Finishing kit – £60
    Headset £20
    Frame – £500

    £1760 Costs £1800 off orange

I know you were sort of defending the price, but it’s more usual for complete bikes to work out cheaper than the individual bits at RRP, isn’t it?

I have mentioned this in a previous post. Those prices are NOT RRP, they are WHAT YOU WOULD GET THEM FOR at a good price ,say from merlin, crc. If the prices were RRP it would cost much more than the price of the Bike

i do like that, but why the lack of roadhog style front right brake mounting?

That price list is retail isn’t it? Presumably orange pay a lot less than that. One of the main reasons you buy a ready made bike is because it’s cheaper than the retail price of the bits. The orange isn’t even that! They make the finish kit themselves as well, so 60 is way too high. 500 quid for the frame is ridiculous as well.

Rip off pure and simple. However fools are easily parted etc

I did mention that, my price list isn’t rrp (would be much more) ,its what you’re likely to get it for from merlin, crc etc. (eg the rrp on the Fox’s is above £500) .

I’d be happy to pay £60 for that finsihing kit, Orange’s own stuff isn’t crap, it’s decent stuff. Probably equal quality to race face entry level stuff i reckon.

    £25 SDG Bel Air saddle?
    £10 Seatpost?
    £15 Bar?
    £10 Stem?

Doesn’t seem massively unreasonable, Would cost more building it up yourself i reckon. And if the frame is hand welded in halifax you’re gonna be paying a premium, but then it isn’t being welded by someone getting payed an unfair wage in bad conditions.

(all prices rough guesses and i know they’d get them much much cheaper, but you wouldnt)

best thing to do is spray a little wd40/gt85 on the pivots and bushings of the front and rear mechs so there isn’t any water to freeze

Wouldnt the organic wear out quicker than the sintered? I’ve never had a problem with sintered pads, could try superstar kevlar pads if you want best of both worlds?

strip it down and lift the bearing covers ,sounds like theres water in the bearings and they’ve rusted, flush the bearings out with something like wd40 and pack it with loads of grease. Should stop it happening again.

You could just wait till its above freezing, but that may be a while, and next time it does drop below freezing itll probably happen again

although i know its strong enough i wouldnt want my handlebars made of it, i can understand the not minding carbon forks but not using carbon handlebars, it’d hurt more if your handlebars failed at speed. I wouldn’t even buy light Aluminum bars, reasonable weight Alu Easton EA30’s is where i feel safe.

(not that i could afford carbon handlebars anyway….or light alu ones)

Maxxis ADvantage 2.1″ eXception, light, roll quick, grip well and quite tough. You can pick them up about £22 each end. could get a Kenda Small block eight too and put it on the back in the summer. Great tyres for the whole year

could you not leave the ifp out and fill the shock to the top with oil? the nitrogen is there to stop the oil foaming because of its small volume (if i remember rightly) but couldn’t you just service more often and wouldn’t the extra volume of oil go someway to stop this happening so quickly?

whatever you do stay AWAY from superstar hubs, work great for a couple of months, then start self destructing. Get a Hope XC hub, you should be able to pick one up for 40-50 quid and theyre just as good as pro 11’s bar the axle changing ability

i have the same on mine, darker coloured rings about the size of foam rings? Bought mine second hand and stripped them when i got them and found the marks, i thought it might the having the fork out of use for a while and the foam rings somehow darkening them? either way it doesnt affect them at all

Suspension on bikes like the orange (fox, RS etc) is much more sophisticated than low end cars, high speed, low speed compression, adjustable travel that doesn’t affect spring rate, shim stacks, dual air etc…. And brakes on bikes are more advanced than low end cars too, car brakes are very simple, 1 piston etc .With bikes you get adjustable power(well pad clearance) ,controlled lever stroke (whatever the word is the the cut out that guides the lever on shimano xt levers). Probably not compared to cars designed for performance though

almost £3500 for mountain bike, that’s more than my car.

Yes, but it uses more advanced technology and wont cost you the thousands of pounds a year your car costs you.

You could buy a 20 minute trial flying lesson in a Cessna from most Flying schools at most airports. Great experience and sounds right up his street if he’s into flying.

The forks ARE worse than the pikes, the 2011 uses sektors with the turnkey damper so not the proper moco damper you get in the pikes.
The forks i’ve used with turnkey dampers have been poor

not just after a certain amount of time.
