    Top Tip!

Put your top through the wash as usual, don't have to do this first but it all helps.

Buy cheap thin bleach for about 70p a bottle. Pour a capful or two in a half a bucket of hot water (5-10 lites) water and steep your newly washed top on it. Leave for half an hour to an hour but do not leave in overnight.

Rinse out with cold clean water and then bung the top back in the wash.

It should stay sterilised for a few more rides and washes before you need to do it again. Alter bleach concentration and frequency of steeping until you're unsmelly and happy.

This worked with the stinky tops I've done it to (endura and gore) and it doesn't seem to ruin the colours, but test a patch first if your not sure.

I suppose my problem with 'touring bikes' esp steel is an image one.

I dont really want a 'dawes galaxy esk' 4 panniers and a bar bag bike.

I want something i can ride fast all day from home and yet stick two panniers and a credit card too and do some light touring. Steel doesnt really fit that in my head…….

WTF?! You have too much money.

Agree RE Nottingham Ale dried yeast, tis good stuff. Lovely beer off it.

What temp you starting it at? if its less than 30, set it off a few degrees hotter and it'll work quicker. Then when it cools it won't have so much work left to do. 18 degrees is plenty and most the work'll be done in 5 days.

I have spare Nottingham ale yeast if you'd like to try it. I also have a heap of whole flower hops if anyone is needing. Challenger, Cascade, Styrian Goldings, Saaz and Fuggles. Cheap plus postage…..!

I've only paid asking price once cos I thought it was very fair for what I was getting. Any seller should ask a realistic price, but just because its second hand doesn't mean it should be dirt cheap. And it doesn't hurt the buyer to ask for a bit (or a lot) off if they don't think it is worth it. Some folk are embarrased to negotiate about prices, asking to pay less doesn't mean your tight!

Ha!! You can come round and bleed my brakes if you like, apart from that its ready to rock! I had a quick ride round my street without the brakes yesterday….. it felt really strange…… very long and very slack!

Mine has orangey, rusty looking patches on it and its never seen dirt yet. Its just cosmetic and I like that you can see the brazing. My cars have worse rust on them…… and its not just cosmetic.

Helped a friend build up one of these:

    Hansomedog XC03

Nice & light, tripple-butted, seems reasonably tough. Built up into a nice light bike even without the lightest parts. For £70 it has to be an option

I had a friend with one of these, built up with LX and Rebas and it was easily as light as my Kula Delux (at afraction of the price). He was like a rocket on it up hill, but said it was a bit harsh pointing the other way.

I reckon getting up hills is the biggest obstacle to any new rider enjoying themselves (male or female), the easier that is the better and then they can look at FS etc. once the fitness has come.
