Should have mentioned the increased chain tension doesn’t just reduce slap it helps to keep the chain on. I found the chain droped too often in my prefered gear for trail centre descents, but after swapping to medium cage I don’t recall an issue.

I run a triple and an 11-34 cassette on my full suss.
I’ve had no problems running a medium cage X9. It does have some play in the bushes now but it is 3 years old (still shifts without a second thought). Pretty bashed up too now so feel I’ve had my money’s worth out of it. I went for the medium to increase clearance/reduce chain slap. I don’t cross my gears so never force it over a bigger range anyway. But I did make sure my chain was long enough so that every gear worked just in case. So lack of range has never been an issue but the pros have been welcome.

perhaps you could learn to use the pi55ing internet properly?

You mean the “world wide web” of course, not the infrastructure behind it (the internet).

Bonty ACX 2.2 have been my faves for a good few years

Tubeless ready version as well – think I’ll give them a shot, cheers

that strikes me as being pretty lightweight for the volume.

Yes, but 2″ Mud X’s are tiny

Basically I’m not saying the HR etc are heavy for their size just that they are heavy compared to a 2.1″ tyre (e.g. Fire XC Pro’s are <600g), so why spin the extra mass when 2.1″ could be all that’s needed for XC. Too many terrain, rider weight and riding style variables to make sweeping generalisations, of course.

Tempted to say I should stop worry over the weights and just appreciate the benefits of the extra volume – and spend less time on the net 😉

P.S. Loving the punctuation marks and smilies as if to say WTF, rather than just a polite ‘I disagree’. STW eh, don’t you love it

I’d certainly consider that light enough for XC but certainly heavier than the Bonty Mud-X I did have on.

    Yeah, about 150g each!

Some good info here. Thanks. Like to look of Maxxis Advantage.

Been thinking about Advantage 2.1’s to replace my ripped pair of High Rollers (Grrr, both on the same Afan descent). Anyone confirm they are a proper 2.1″?

Also, can anyone comment on a Blue Groove/Nevegal front/rear combo using Stans and No tubes rims?

646g for which tyre? Maxxis website has 2.35″ folding Rollers at 695g

High Roller 2.35″ folding – too heavy for cross country/long days out
High Roller 2.1″ 62a exception – too light-weight/narrow/lacking in centre and shoulder tread to survive rocky descents/hold a decent line downhill without being deflected. The lack of shoulder tread (compared to the 2.35) leaves the side walls vulnerable, IME.

Wish Maxxis did a 2.1 High Roller with the same tread as the 2.3 Roller

    All IMO of course

Second that – just make sure you keep the metal covers from either side of the wheel from the X9 mech, or you’ll have to open up the fixing holes on the X7 ones.

Shimano XT everytime. £45 from Merlin and a negligible 32g heavier than XTR.

Do you ride a full suspension bike? Could the cable tension be vaying as the swingarm moves?

OK maybe I should clarify: genuine Sram X7 jockey wheels and Sram X9 JW’s are inter-changable. I know because I have X7 JW’s in my X9 mech. It is the Tacx replacements that are flawed – the guide JW’s do not have the eccentric mounting and so don’t fit – whether X7 or X9 IME.

Does the X9 tension wheel have a bush or a roller ball bearing? I can’t remember as it was so long ago I binned the chocolate X9 wheel! I believe bushes are more suited to this application than ball bearings (and so do Shimano).

What’s the difference between the X7 wheels and the X9 wheels?

the bottom one should fit, the top one won’t.

Rubbish. Both guide and tension X7 jockey wheels fit fine in my X9 rear mech.

Middleburn are well thought of, they even do XTR specific replacements as some XTR cranks have non-standard BCD.

Have run both Bonty Mud X and Maxxis High Rollers on converted Mavic 717 rims and on No tubes Arch rims. Bontys seated fine with a track pump but used a CO2 cylinder to seat the Maxxis. CO2 is supposed to be a bad idea as it can freeze the latex, but I’ve never had a problem either at home or out on the trail.

Why o why do people always suggest the Eno rear hub route even when it clearly doesn’t keep to the budget! 😀

Excentriker or this may be more in budget. Never used one so can’t comment but be interested if anyone has?

Medium cage X9 with 11-34 casette and triple = no problems as I have the chain the correct length. Could even cross the gears if I wanted too.

The Sram jockey wheels last months, Shimano last years. Also, the limit screws on X9 screw into plastic inserts, not good. They snap off/push out especially if you’re a bit heavy handed changing into the largest sprocket. Shame really as otherwise I was totally sold, still shifting flawlessly after 18 months with same cheap Halfrauds cable. Definitely recommend straight through outer though, as this was probably a big factor. Anyone know of jockey wheels with bushes, like Shimano, that fit X9?
